History The introduction of the Groundnut to The Gambia
In the Western Sudan, the groundnut is one of the most important cash crops and food staple nowadays. Unlike the African bambara groundnut, it is not an indigenous species, but was brought by Portuguese traders from the Americas in the 16th century. It quickly spread through the Sudan due to its high nutrition values, draught resistance and later, as a product of long distance trade for its oils. Now it is one of the main agricultural products of landscapes that far apart as The Gambia and Northern Cameroon. Related items Pages

The groundnuts or peanuts are originally South American, were they were grown by Indian communities. It was introduced to West-Africa (first the Senegambia area) by the Portuguese in the 16th century. Here it spread quickly, though faster in the interior of Africa than along the coast. Cultivation on a larger scale began before 1830 in Senegambia, mostly as insurance against failure of the millet harvest, because of it's resistance to drought. The first small exports from Senegambia to Europe were reported from the year 1830. There fallowed a boom in exports when the potentials for peanut oil was realized. I industrializing Europe there now was an ever-growing demand for lubricating oils. Further, oils were needed in the production of soap, as there at the same time was massive campaigning for new standards of hygiene. And of course, vegetable oils were needed for cooking.

Artistic production responds to refinements in metallurgic technologies and an intensified use of symbolic and ritualistic emblems of kingship. Artists of the Guinea coast are influenced aesthetically through contact with Islamic traders and the Portuguese, who often directly commission the carving of ivory objects. Additionally, the Akan (in what is now Ghana) develop an elaborate system of cast brass gold weights to measure the precious gold dust being traded to North Africa and then to Europe; the design of these gold weights is heavily influenced first by abstract Islamic visual motifs and later indigenous Akan aesthetics.
The royal court of Benin is believed to have originated in the thirteenth century. According to Edo oral tradition, the kingdom was governed by the thirty-one "Rulers of the Sky," or Ogiso kings. The Ada ceremonial sword, which in contemporary Benin court ritual remains an important emblem of kingship, is believed to date to this period. Eweka I, who may have been from the neighboring Yoruba dynasty, is the first Benin oba (king), succeeding the Ogiso kings around 1300. Eweka's authority is undermined by conflict with autochthonous chiefs. Oba Ewedo of the kingdom of Benin reorganizes the

Paper presented at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND IN PORTUGAL
In Iberia the Reconquista movement was growing in its mission to recover their lands from the Muslim Moors who had first arrived in the 8th century. Jews may have first arrived far earlier during the time of the Phonecians and Roman. Nevertheless, Maghrebi Jews were key allies of the Moors and centuries-long residents of Iberia. Probably as early as 1480 one may find the beginnings of the Spanish Inquisition and expulsion of Jews. It was however in 1492 the the Spanish Inquisition emerged in its fullest expression of intolerance, anti-Semitism. This social pathology quickly spread to neighboring Portugal where Portuguese Kings Joao II and especially Manuel I in 1496, determined to exile thousands of Jews to Sao Tome, Principe, and Cape Verde. The numbers expelled at this time were so great that the term Portuguese" almost implied those of Jewish origin. Those who were not expelled were converted by force or were even executed.
Despite the important role of Portuguese Jews in commerce, navigational sciences, and in the cartography of Africa, they faced riots, pogroms, and profound oppression during the

Operations came to an unexpected halt when the Auster crashed in the Asaroka Gap due to bad weather. The pilot Harry Hartwig died on impact. Despite this tragedy, the faith and determination of the supporters of MAF overcame the setback to ensure the aviation service continued in PNG. As a result, the network of MAF bases and routes has expanded across PNG serving several hundred remote communities. Initially, MAF flights predominantly supported expatriate missionaries in Papua New Guinea. With subsequent nationalisation of their positions, the missionary population rightly decreased. MAF now serves those who continue that work, including pastors, teachers, community development workers and medical staff, as well as the wider community. MAF flies for churches, missions and Christian organisations at a subsidised rate. We also work alongside the church to further the gospel of Jesus Christ. In addition we maintain a Christian witness while supporting local communities, many of whom rely on our aircraft as their primary means of transport.

Archaeology, Language, and History:
Essays on Culture and Ethnicity
John Edward Terrell (editor)
Amazon A book review by Danny Yee It is too often assumed that language, culture, and biology are uncomplicatedly coupled, and that their history can be modelled with simple "trees". Terrell asked the contributors to Archaeology, Language, and History not just to question this, but to start with what he calls the "strong Boas hypothesis", that "language, culture, and biology always vary independently of one another except under specific circumstances". Some largely ignored that injunction, however, and there is little common theory among the contributions. But perhaps a collection of largely unconnected papers is the logical format for an attempt to demonstrate the importance of local circumstances and the problems with oversimple theories. Archaeology, Language, and History contains some fascinating material, both theoretical and regional. I fear, however, that it is unlikely to receive much attention, largely because its approach suffers from a public relations problem. Major migration events may be rare and anomalous in human history, but they lend themselves to grand theorising, story-telling, and popularisation, after the fashion of Jared Diamond and Cavalli-Sforza . A collection of papers stressing the historical and geographical specificity of ethnicity and language use, and focusing on small-scale communities, is just not as approachable, either by lay readers or other scholars. It is also, of course, much harder to summarise.

Asia-Pacific Regional Press Freedom Seminar Country Report - Papua New Guinea The Papua New Guinea Media Council is comprised of nine members, six are media outlets and three are media and advertising agencies. The current President is Mr. Peter John Aitsi, General Manager of PNGFM - a commercial radio station. He is continuing the the good work initiated by the two former Presidents. The Media Council was originally set up to protect the interest of the media organizations, it was as a vehicle to share information about possible "bad accounts". Over the years the focus of the Council has widened significantly to address aspects of improving the performance of the media as a whole. This focus has taken the form of industry wide training courses, and the uniformity of approach by the media houses in tackling common goals. The Media Council Board is made up of members of the various media organizations, and has established a specific working committee that concentrates on identify and facilitating training opportunities for the people within the industry. The training courses developed and made available to University Students, the general public and other interested groups that may wish to take part. The long-term focus of the Council is to continue to encourage and develop the professionalism within the industry by the media houses and the people that choose media as a career. The principal is to develop better quality performance by our people and our organisations to ensure the interests of the People of Papua New Guinea are protected by a responsible, active, free media.

See also Eastern and Southern Africa and Western Sudan Among the rich artistic traditions of the Guinea coast, we focus here on ancient Ife (also known as Ile-Ife), the cradle of contemporary Yoruba culture. Situated in the West African forest, Ife was the center of a trading network that capitalized on its accessibility from the Niger and several smaller rivers, from the West African coast, and from the savanna country to the north. Stone monoliths are characteristic of early Ife art, while in the latter half of the first millennium A.D. distinct styles of finely modeled terracotta representations and works in cast metal were developed and refined. This period is also significant for the emergence of lost-wax casting. While the smelting of metallic ores dates to the first millennium B.C., and by about 1000 A.D. iron and copper smelting techniques had spread throughout the continent, the complex technique of lost-wax casting began to be practiced only in the tenth century. This method of producing exquisitely refined brass works was first employed along the Guinea coast at Igbo-Ukwu, a region populated by Igbo peoples.
Ife
During what is known as Ife's Pre-Pavement period , human and animal figures in stone and terracotta become more common, and are depicted with increasing naturalism.
