    Guinea
    History
Between the 13th and the 15th centuries, Guinea was part of the Empire of Mali, which dominated most of the Sahel region. Around the 15th century, Fulani herders started migrating into the area, and after the Holy Islamic War of 1725 gained control over the Fouta Djalon area . The Portuguese arrived at the coast during the 15th century, and the slave trade followed hot on their heels. The French arrived in this part of Africa early in the 19th century, proclaiming the coastal region a French protectorate in 1849. Samori Tour©, a national hero, led the fight against French rule until 1898 when he was captured. Resistance to the French was particularly fierce in the Fouta Djalon, but it gradually petered out in the 20th century into the odd outbreak. One of Tour©s descendants, Ahmed Sekou Tour©, became the most famous Guinean of all. He was born into a poor Malink© family and become one of the most important trade union leaders in French West Africa. In 1956 he led a breakaway movement from the French parent union and formed a federation of African trade unions. In 1958, French President de Gaulle offered the West African French colonies autonomy as separate countries in a Franco-African community, or immediate independence. Sekou Tour© was the only West African leader to reject the autonomy path, declaring, perhaps a little rashly, that Guinea preferred 'freedom in poverty to liberty in chains'. Poverty is what the country got for the next 40 years, although the freedom part is debatable. In a fit of pique, de Gaulle immediately withdrew the French administration, and the colonial bureaucrats destroyed all the civilian archives and military equipment - they even ripped out telephone lines. French citizens fled with massive amounts of capital, and the economy disintegrated.

History It is believed that Papua New Guinea was originally inhabited by Asian settlers over 50,000 years ago. The first European contact was by the Portuguese explorer Jorge de Meneses in 1526-27 who named it Ilhas dos Papuas (Island of the Fuzzy Hairs). The Spaniard Inigo Ortiz de Retes later called it New Guinea because he thought the people similar to those of Guinea in Africa. Further exploration followed, including landings by Bougainville, Cook, Stanley and John Moresby.

History: New Guinea has been inhabited by various peoples from throughout Asia for some 10,000 years. Its recorded history began with the visits of Portuguese explorers in the early 16th century, followed by Dutch traders. The Dutch East India Company took control of the western half of the island, which became a colonial possession attached to the Dutch East Indies in 1828. The territory was then split between the British and Germans in the 1880s until after World War I, when it was transferred in its entirety to the control of Australia, endorsed by a United Nations mandate. Most of it was occupied by the Japanese during World War II. After 1945, New Guinea reverted to Australian administration before the granting of independence in 1975. Michael Somare, previously Chief Minister, assumed the post of Prime Minister. Somare remained in power until 1980, when Sir Julius Chan’s conservative People’s Progress Party (PPP) came out of opposition to form a government. Since then, Papua New Guinea’s domestic politics have been dominated by the struggle between Chan, Somare and the third major political figure of recent times, Mekere Morauta, leader of the People’s Democratic Movement (PDM), which was formed from dissidents of both PPP and the country’s third main political party

Introduction [Top of Page] Background: In 1994, 20 years after independence from Portugal, the country's first multiparty legislative and presidential elections were held. An army uprising that triggered a bloody civil war in 1998, created hundreds of thousands of displaced persons. The president was ousted by a military junta in May 1999. An interim government turned over power in February 2000 when opposition leader Koumba YALLA took office following two rounds of transparent presidential elections. Guinea-Bissau's transition back to democracy will be complicated by a crippled economy devastated by civil war and the military's predilection for governmental meddling. Contact History

The Torres Strait was named after the Spanish adventurer Luis Baez de Torres who visited the area in 1606. Prior to Torres' voyage there were indications of Islander contacts with people from the nearby Asian region. In I770 the Englishman James Cook claimed Australia for the British. Contact between Europeans and Torres Strait Islanders was infrequent between I770 and the 1840s. When contact did occur it was sometimes cordial and sometimes violent. Contact between Europeans and Torres Strait Islanders was put on a more or less permanent looting through Beche-de-mer fishing and pearl shelling which began in the 1860s. The establishment of both these industries was accompanied by forced labour, violence and abductions. In 187I the London Missionary Society (LMS), using teachers from the Loyalty Islands in New Caledonia, set up operations on Darnley and Dauan Islands. The LMS's operations gradually expanded to include the other Torres Strait Islands. The settlement of Thursday Island was founded in I876 and in I879 an Act of the Queensland colonial Parliament made the Torres Strait Islands part of Queensland.
