The history of Guinea Airways dates back to the discovery of gold along the Bulolo River in northeastern New Guinea, and the influx of prospectors to Lae and Salamau which followed it in the 1920s. The founders of a mining firm operating in New Guinea, called Guinea Gold, hired Capt. Andrew E.'Pard' Mustar to take an aircraft to New Guinea to supply transportation to their venture. Guinea Gold bought a surplus de Havilland DH.37 (c/n 105) in December 1926. Mustar and A.W.D. 'Mull' Mullins, as mechanic, accompanied it from Sydney to Rabaul by ship, flying it to New Guinea in March 1927. With this aircraft, they began to service Wau, in the gold fields, from Lae. The Lae airstrip was only 600 yards long, that at Wau 800 yards but with a 1 in 12 slope. On advice from Mustar, it improved its carrying capacity by buying a Junkers W.34, and by early 1931 were operating a Junkers G.31. The durable Junkers aircraft were able to carry bulky loads, particularly the G.31 tri-motors, which could be loaded by crane via a large opening cargo door in the roof. The aircraft moved cars, tractors, engines, livestock and heavy plant. Bulolo Gold Dredging Ltd. bought two further G.31s (which they named 'Peter' and 'Paul'), which they had Guinea operate for them. A third aircraft was named 'Pat', operated first by Bulolo, then registered to Guinea. These large Junkers' played a major part in moving the heavy components of mining dredges to the fields when surface gold became scarce. In 1931-32, Guinea's pilots had lifted 3,947 tons of freight. All airlines in the US lifted only 513 tons in 1931, Britain somewhat more than the US, and France 1,508 tons.

    DRAFT
Southeastern Regional Seminar in African Studies
    A Brief History
    15 January 1999
    JOSEPH C. MILLER
University of Virginia South Asianists had earlier achieved a considerable degree of organization in the region, largely through the outreach activities of the National Defense Education Act Title VI center at the University of Virginia, led by historian Professor Walter Hauser. There was also a Southern Atlantic States Association for Asian and African Studies (SASAAAS), oriented more toward teaching and public outreach than the SSRC Seminar program, but nonetheless illustrative of the possibilities of a regional organization in the enthusiastic participation it enjoyed. There was also interest in forming a less structured Southern Association of Africanists in the region, led by Ann Dunbar and others in central North Carolina, and focused on teaching outreach. Ann Dunbar organized the last meeting of the Seminar's first year at the University of North Carolina on April 20, 1974, focused on discussion of Rodney's How Europe Underdeveloped Africa, with copies provided to all members. Akpan (South Carolina State College) and Nyang presented papers, with comments by Sagay and Thornton. (See report to SSRC, Appendix IId.) Expenses totaled $308.99. On the strength of the benefits that all participants felt they had gained from the Seminar's first year, and indications of continued sponsorship from several institutions in the region, the group resolved to apply for an extension of the Seminar's SSRC funding. All the papers from the year were filed with the Library of Congress through the chief its Exchange and Grant Division (Nathan R. Einhorn).

The ABC's first major involvement in Papua New Guinea was during World War II. ABC war correspondents were based in Port Moresby and covered fighting across the Pacific region. The ABC also provided programs to Radio 9PA, the station set up by the Army to broadcast to Allied forces in the New Guinea campaign. Australian Army Captain Robin Wood (left) officer-in-charge of 9PA, with US Army Captain Edgar L. Tidwell also attached to the station, in 1944. Robin Wood later became ABC Federal Director of Programme Services.
It would probably be safe to say that no station of its size ever had such tremendous resources upon which to draw for its programmes. The ABC, BBC, Australian Commercial Stations and the American Department of Information all made available transcriptions of their best programmes, and consequently the forces were extremely well supplied with entertainment. ABC Papua New Guinea Manager H.S. Sibary, Radio Active magazine, August 1956

    History of FSP/Counterpart International
The Foundation for the Peoples of the South Pacific
On January 27, 1965, the Foundation for the Peoples of the South Pacific (FSP) was formally incorporated as a tax-exempt, non-profit, non-partisan, non-sectarian voluntary international organization. Dedicated to the rehabilitation, welfare and growth of the Pacific islands following the devastation of World War II, FSP honed a unique approach to development. Unlike many large international agencies and donor governments, which sent in teams of overseas experts to run programs, FSP focused on building the institutions of a society that could help itself. When FSP began its work in the Pacific Islands in 1963, almost all of the islands were colonial societies with powerful colonial officers running the civil service, education, health and other national structures. FSP became the principal secular non-governmental organization (NGO) to assist islanders during their transition to independence and sovereignty. When the New Hebrides became independent as Vanuatu in 1980, for example, its first Prime Minister and its first Foreign Minister were graduates of FSP programs. FSP was the also the only NGO to work with all of the churches in a region where ninety-five per cent of the people are Christian. In 1967 FSP published a nine volume socio-economic survey on the Pacific Islands, and in 1968 its office in Sydney, Australia was established to coordinate programs in the Pacific region. This office grew into the first FSP developed nation independent affiliate and is today known as

History of the membership The continent's position as a crossroads between the Americas, Europe and Asia also lays it open to transnational crimes such as traffic in weapons, illicit drug trafficking, illegal immigration, traffic in stolen motor vehicles and fraud, which can only be stopped by international co-operation. Seeking and locating the criminals involved poses problems relating to information exchange, international identification and arrests with a view to extradition. This is why Interpol-in accordance with Article 2 (1) of its Constitution-ensures the closest possible co-operation between the criminal police authorities of all member countries, including those in Africa. Crime is not associated with a particular region and is certainly not a problem for Africa alone. Ever since it was established, the International Criminal Police Organization - Interpol has been seen by countries all over the world as an institution whose principles and objectives correspond to universal aspirations for human rights, public safety and the fight against ordinary law crime.
