Miscellaneous Pet Care:
My guinea pig bites at the sipper tube of her water bottleinstead of licking it or nibbling on itand I don't think she's getting enough water. What should I do?
Back to FAQ Menu
Answer
Animals all have personality quirks, and your guinea pig simply may not be comfortable with the kind of water bottle she has. It's important that she gets plenty of water, though, so you should try giving her a few options to see what she likes best. First, you can try putting her water bottle down a little lower; she simply may not be able to reach it. If that doesn't work, try using a smaller water bottle with a smaller tube, such as a tube designed for hamsters and gerbils. You could also try using a large tube, like the tubes used for rabbits. It may just be that you need to find the right sized tube for her mouth. If none of those ideas work, you could try a heavy, hard-to-tip ceramic water bowl. These bowls make a lot more mess than water bottles, so you'll need to clean her cage more often to make sure her feet stay dry and clean. If you try all these options and your guinea pig still doesn't seem to be drinking, you can take her to your veterinarian for an examination.

Setting Up a Guinea Pig Home
Guinea pigs, being social creatures, do best kept in groups of two or more, but most readily available commercial cages are not large enough to house a pair of pigs. The "old" guideline is 2 square feet per guinea pig, so for a pair you would need a minimum of 4 square feet. However, this is still a cramped situation, and the bigger cage you can provide, the better for your cavies. In many cases, a home made cage provides ample space inexpensively, and may be a better choice than a cramped commercial guinea pig cage (more on home made cage ideas below).

How to care for a guinea pig
Learn how to care for a guinea pig! A guinea pig is a friendly little animal which makes a good pet for children and adults.
A guinea pig is a friendly little animal which makes a good pet for children and adults. You will notice that at first your guinea pig runs away from you and you may be concerned that your pet doesn't like you. Guinea pigs are shy animals but with alot of patience on your part, you will eventually gain his trust and he will want your attention when ever he can get it. bodyOffer(28895) Before you go to the pet store to pick out your new pet, there are a few things that you will need to prepare for your pet ahead of time. A Home For Your New Pet Your new pet will need a house. The house that you prepare for your guinea pig is very important. It will need to have a lot of ventilation due to the fact that the ammonia that is given off by urine can make your guinea pig sick. You should never allow him to become wet. The bedding must be kept dry at all times. An all glass aquarium is not a good home for a guinea pig because there is not enough ventilation. A wire cage with a solid bottom is a good home for a guinea pig. A large bird cage with a tray that pulls out is a good home for a guinea pig as the tray can be pulled out and cleaned daily. Food For Your New Pet The main part of your guinea pig's diet will be guinea pig pellets which you can buy in your local pet store. You should have a dish of pellets in the cage at all times so the guinea pig can eat whenever he is hungry. It is a good idea to also offer him fruit or vegtables each day.Since a guinea pig requires a lot of vitamin C, turnip greens are a good choice for a treat for the guinea pig. If you do not give him fruits or vegtables you will need to give him vitamin C drops in his water bottle. You can buy these drops in the pet store.

PUPPIES FREE PUPPY KIT KITTENS FREE KITTEN KIT ... WELFARE ORGANISATIONS Guinea Pigs or Cavys, as they are often refered to, make good pets. They are clean and their size makes them easy to handle. Guinea Pigs can be kept as pets where it is impractical to keep other animals such as dogs and cats. A guinea pig makes little or no noise and if properly looked after, it does not smell. HOUSING They are best kept in an outdoor weatherproof hutch. The hutch should have a weatherproof box which lucerne hay can be placed as bedding. In bad weather your guinea pig should be placed under cover. DIET Vegetables can also be fed in moderation, especially those high in vitamin C to prevent vitamin deficiencies. Your guinea pig will enjoy carrots, celery, tomatoes, apples, broccoli and lettuce. Also bread, thistles and fresh grass can be given but remember the Guinea Pig and Rabbit Meal should be the staple diet and the green matter a supplement. A Salt Lick Block hung in the cage will provide minerals in your guinea pig’s diet.

Caring for your guinea pig
Guinea pigs are very loving, sociable pets and require a lot of attention. If you are unable to give your guinea pig the social attention it needs, consider getting another one as a companion for your pet. If you decide to get more than one guinea pig, either get two females or a male and a female. Two males may not get along, and if you get a male and a female you may want to consider getting one of them neutered to prevent unwanted litters. Taking good care of your guinea pig will help it live a long and healthy life. Make sure the cage you choose for your guinea pig has plenty of ventilation. Many people use an aquarium and they don't provide enough ventilation. The cage should be large enough for the guinea pig to comfortably move around in, and it needs to have a solid bottom. Wire bottoms are not good for the guinea pig's feet. Guinea pigs are timid creatures and like something to hide in. A paper lunch bag or small cardboard box is a great hiding place for your guinea pig. They can easily be thrown away and replaced when soiled. bodyOffer(7117) Small animal bedding and litter is available to line your guinea pig's cage. Lining the bottom with newspaper first will absorb any liquid and make cage cleaning easier. You should remove and replace the soiled bedding once a week, and clean the cage with hot, soapy water.

Guinea Pig Care Sheet
Physical Description Guinea pigs are not really pigs but belong to a group of rodents called cavies. They are small stocky animals with short legs and short necks. This design keeps their mouths close to the ground for eating grass. Guinea pigs come in a variety of colors and can have from one color to five or more. Their hair can be short and wavy to long and flowing. Adults weigh up to 3 pounds and live an average of 4-7 years. Behavior Guinea pigs are usually very quiet animals. When scared, threatened, or nervous they will hide in the closest safe place (i.e. an enclosed tube, box, etc.). Guinea pigs will communicate with squeaks or whistles, showing distress or contentment according to the volume. Their teeth are constantly growing and they will spend lots of time gnawing on things. If they cannot keep their teeth worn down, they will become overgrown and may need veterinary attention. Guinea pigs almost never bite unless mishandled, irritated or taste something on the handler.

Not all small animals are legal to have as pets in all states, but you should be able to find a super small animal pet wherever you live. All small animals are not the same, however. Some are calmer and easier for a small child to hold, while others are frisky and take more attention. The housing and feeding requirements are unique to each animal, just as each animal is unique. Take a little time to learn about the pet that is right for you. Find out what your pet needs and how to take care of it. Your reward will be a very happy pet and you will have a great friend.
