I recommend reading his site first, it answers many of the most fundamental questions that most fanciers have. Hopefully, he won't move it anytime soon! An additional resource is the Guinea Pig Daily Digest (GPDD). The GPDD is an e-mail list that is a wonderful discussion group about guinea pigs. We share health care information, general stories of piggie antics, grief at the loss of a beloved pet, and have some wild virtual adventures! The information on this site is gleaned from comments in the GPDD or from private correspondence with members of that list. Wherever possible I have credited the originator of the information. It's not that she's overweightlike all guinea pigs, she needs a big stomach to digest all the tough plant food she eats. The three most common breeds of guinea pig are the smooth-coated, who has short, glossy fur; the Abyssinian, whose hair grows in fluffy tufts all over her body; and the Peruvian, who has long, silky hair that flows to the ground. Guinea pigs are social, and if you keep two or more females together, they'll become great friends. If you want two males, it's smart to choose two babies from the same litter. Outline of Guinea Pig Care The Home for Unwanted and Abandoned Guinea Pigs I need Vitamin C, warmth, and a lifetime of loving care Living Space : Use a wire cage, not an aquarium, with a tray bottom. There should NOT be a wire floor above the tray bottom. This is uncomfortable for the guinea pig's feet and causes serious (sometimes fatal) medical problems. The minimum size for one guinea pig is 1x2 feet; bigger is much better. Cover the tray floor with a thick layer of newspaper to absorb moisture, and put bedding (wood shavings-aspen is recommended, hay, or other) on top on the newspaper. Provide a "nest box" for the pig to go in or under, to feel secure. A metal coffee can with both ends cut out works well; so does a clay flowerpot. Both are washable, and you can still see the pig while he's in his "house." : Guinea pig pellets should be available all the time, and a feeder is better than a dish since the dish will soon have dirt in it. You MUST give your guinea pig cabbage or kale (or orange, if he will eat it) at least 3 times a week, or else give him a Vitamin C supplement. This is because guinea pigs require Vitamin C to live, and the pellet food may have lost its vitamins due to age or exposure to light. Vitamin C deficiency is a frequent cause of guinea pig death. In addition, you may give your guinea pig lettuce, celery, carrots, parsley, apple, grapes, whole wheat bread, and hay (timothy grass hay is good, alfalfa hay should be given only in very small quantities).

Children and Guinea Pigs The Home for Unwanted and Abandoned Guinea Pigs A living being is a big responsibility Kids and Guinea Pigs: Teaching Responsibility
Guinea Pig as First Pet: The Home got a call one December from a woman who wanted a guinea pig for her son for Christmas. The boy was almost six, and she thought the guinea pig would help his "learn responsibility." The mother said she really wanted a dog but was going to "start small, with something that will not take a lot of time." I cried inside for whatever guinea pig would end up in this household (The Home would not adopt to them). A living being should not be an educational toy. How, then, to teach responsibility? Teaching by Example : One can't teach responsibility by giving a child a job he can't do. Parents can teach appropriate animal care by example, leaving no doubt about whose responsibility the pet is. The Home has adopted many guinea pigs to families with children, but the first thing The Home asks callers who say their child wants a guinea pig is: Do YOU want a guinea pig? Qualified Pet Owners: The almost six-year-old boy should be told, "You can't have a pet until you can take care of one. That means not only feeding and cleaning and attention, but money and a car for vet trips, and a place where the animal can live with you for the natural length of her life.

Guinea Pigs In their natural habitat, guinea pigs live in open, grassy areas. They seek shelter in naturally protected areas or burrows deserted by other animals. Guinea pigs are sociable animals and tend to live in groups. They are strictly herbivorous ( plant-eating ) and do most of their foraging for grasses, roots, fruits and seeds in the late afternoon and early evening. For many years guinea pigs have been used in biomedical research laboratories. Consequently, their medical problems have been traditionally approached on a group basis, rather than on an individual basis. As a result, very little practical information exists on the medical care and treatment of individual pet guinea pigs. How to Care for Guinea Pigs
A descendant of the wild guinea pigs of South America, today's domesticated guinea pig is viewed by many as an "easy" pet for children. Many parents select a guinea pig as a first pet for their child, believing a small pet needs only a small amount of care. It is important to understand that these little guys have lots of requirements, including a roomy cage, specialized diet, daily cleanup, and gentle handling, and that an adult should be the primary caretaker. 1: Make Room at the Inn
They may be small, but guinea pigs require ample space to move about. Make sure their living quarters are at least 18 inches wide, 14 inches high, and 25 inches deep. Guinea pigs housed in larger cages are more likely to be active. Do not use aquariums, as they provide poor ventilation, and mesh or wire-floor cages hurt guinea pigs' tender feet.
Remember also to provide plenty of high-quality hay, which these rodents use for nesting and snacking. Do not use materials such as sawdust, cedar chips, or fabrics that may cause respiratory or other health problems. Finally, provide your guinea pig with a gnawing log (such as an untreated fruit tree branch), tunnels to crawl through, and platforms to climb on. Add a heavy food bowl resistant to tipping and gnawing and a water bottle with a sipper tube. 2: Get a Little Closer
Guinea pigs are easily stressed, so they require careful handling. To pick up a guinea pig, slowly place one hand under his chest just behind the front legs, and gently cup your other hand under his hindquarters. Once you have a firm but gentle grip on the animal, lift him. Then immediately pull him close to your chest or lap so he feels safe and doesn't thrash around.

Is the Guinea Pig a Pig from Guinea?
The guinea pig's native home is not Guinea and neither does it belong to the pig family! In fact, one of the guinea pig's closest relations is the chinchilla. One possible explanation is that present day guinea pigs are descended from the wild cui kept by the Incas 500 years ago. These cui were smaller than the present day guinea pigs that we see now and were eaten by the Incas on special occasions. Spanish conquistadors who landed in South America noticed that the skinned cui looked like tiny pigs and referred to them as "little Indian pigs". "Guinea" was probably added because the Spaniards took them to Guiana (also called Guinea) as a source of food on board the ship. Later, they were brought into Europe as pets in the 1700s. Today, the guinea pig or cavy is a popular pet in many parts of the world. VITAL STATISTICS

I. Guinea Pig: Is a Guinea Pig right for you? INDEX Guess who's the most docileand vocalof all companion rodents? She's not a pig and she's not from New Guinea, but she'll love to sit on your lap, and has been known to squeak with delight when her favorite human enters the room. Could there be room for this cuddlebug in your heart and home? South American natives, wild guinea pigs were first domesticated by the Indians of Peru, who raised them mainly for food. They've been bred for the pet trade, however, in a variety of colors, from brown spotted and black banded to pure golden and snowy white. As for hairstyles, there are shorthaired and fluffy tufted guinea pigs, as well as a breed with long, silky locks that flow to the ground. (The latter, by the way, is known as the Peruvian, and if you opt for this little piggy, he'll need to be groomed daily.) Guinea pigs can weigh a couple of pounds, and have an average lifespan of 5 to 7 years. If you're thinking about getting a guinea pig, it's smart to start thinking about getting more than one. These social animals love to be with their own kind, and if you keep two or more together, they'll become great friends. ASPCA experts recommend two females for first-time guinea pig caretakers, as adult males tend to fight. If you want to keep males and females together, please have a veterinarian neuter the male and spay the female. And while it's an excellent idea to keep more than one guinea pig, please make sure you have enough room for them! These critters require a large cage with a minimum of two square feet per pig.

I. Guinea Pigs: Understanding Your Guinea Pig INDEX If you're reading this, there's a good chance you're a first-time guinea pig caretaker. Congratulations, you've got some very special, very expressive new friends. Bet you can't wait to learn all about these cuddly charactersand if you give them the chance, they'll have no problem letting you know how they feel. Easily the most vocal of all companion rodents, these charming critters will have you speaking "guinea pig" in no time. Did you know that your pet's wild counterparts are highly social and live in large herds? That’s why it's very important that you keep at least a pair. Two or more guinea pigs housed together will become great friends, but they will also bond with you, too. You'll need to give each of your pigs some special attention every day. For the more mellow fellows, 30 minutes or so of quietly sitting on your lap may be pure heaven. While most piggies enjoy cuddling with their humans, a few individuals don't. If yours is in the latter group, take the time to figure out what he likes best. Maybe he'd prefer to tunnel through some of his favorite PVC pipes! There's something special about your pets' teeth, too. Your guinea pigs' front teeth, like that of all rodents, grow continuously throughout their lives. To help keep their choppers properly shaped and nicely filed, your pets will need to chewa lot! Check your pet supply store for a variety of safe, appropriate chew toys. Branches and twigs from untreated trees will also fit the billAND give your companions something fun to do. Do not give them wood from cedar, apricot, cherry and peach trees, as they are toxic.
