INTRODUCTION
Background: Composed of a mainland portion and five inhabited islands, Equatorial Guinea gained independence in 1968 after 190 years of Spanish rule. The tiny country, one of the smallest on the African continent, has been ruled by President OBIANG NGUEM MBASOGO since he seized power in a coup in 1979. Although nominally a constitutional democracy since 1991, the 1996 and 2002 presidential elections - as well as the 1999 legislative elections - were widely seen as being flawed. TOP OF PAGE

New Guinea Geography, Climate and Location New Guinea is an island in the southwestern Pacific Ocean just north of Australia. It has an area of about 790,000 sq. km (305,000 sq. mi.) Along the coast, the temperature is probably 27 degrees Celsius (80 degrees Fahrenheit.) Jaya is its highest peak at 5,029 meters (16,500 feet). New Guinea is in the monsoon region, so it has more than 2,540 mm (100 inches) of rain per year. In the rainy season, the river will rise just below the floor of the houses, which are around 6 feet above the river. The sea level land has an average temperature of between 21and 32 degree Celsius (70 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit). A bunch of streams and rivers flow down the slopes of the mountains and across the lowlands. New Guinea's largest rives are the Fly and Sepik. They have large swampy places around them in the lowlands. Home History People and Economy Authors ... Bibliography
