    INTRODUCTION
Background: Independent from France since 1958, Guinea did not hold democratic elections until 1993 when Gen. Lansana CONTE (head of the military government) was elected president of the civilian government. He was reelected in 1998. Unrest in Sierra Leone has spilled over into Guinea, threatening stability and creating a humanitarian emergency. TOP OF PAGE

The country of Papua New Guinea includes the islands of New Britain, Bougainville, the Bismark Archipelago, as well as the western half of New Guinea. It has a landmass of 473,189 sq km; has sovereignty over some 600 other islands, atolls and coral reefs; and has a central core of mountains, the Own Stanley Range, running west to east, which rises steeply from the coastal plains to the summit of the highest peak, Mt Wilhelm, at 4509 m. Several large rivers flow through PNG, including the Fly, Sepik, Ramu and Markham rivers.
    Climate
Papua New Guinea is hot and wet all year round. Officially there is a wet and dry season, but only in Port Moresby is the dry season noticeable. The south meanwhile has a similar climate to northern Australia. December to March is the wetter season, the drier being from May to October.
