In this region the style of woodcarving is abstract. Distortion is often used to emphasize features of spiritual significance. The figures of the Dogon tribe of central Mali stress the cylindrical shape of the torso. Some wooden carvings were made by an earlier people, the Tellem. Sculptures such as masks carved of soft wood are homes for the spirits and are discarded once they have been used in rituals. The Dogon have three distinctive styles of sculpture: masks incorporating recessed rectangles, ancestor sculptures carved in abstract geometric style used as architectural supports, and freestanding figures made in a cylindrical style. High-ranking Dogon families often had carved doors on their granaries. The Bambara people of W Mali are famous for their striking wooden headdresses in the form of stylized antelope heads. The art of the Baga of NW Guinea includes snake carvings, drums supported by small free-standing figures, and spectacular masks. Poro society members in Liberia made ceremonial masks notable for their size, color, and vitality of expression. The Dan are known for their quasi-naturalistic, smoothly carved masks that represent materializations of spirits of the forest. Many of their masks are used to instruct initiates and relate to various social responsibilities, such as fighting fires and making peace. The Dan also carve large wooden spoons with anthropomorphic features used in ceremonies to show the importance of women.

WEST AFRICA BY BICYCLE
For those who love to interact with people and gain a better understanding of the world when they travel, the Bicycle Africa schedules several cross-cultural programs in West Africa each year: "Sahel Journey" and "West Africa People-to-People." Each two-week itinerary is unique. Consecutive programs are easily combined for a more extensive trip. All of West Africa is very rich in cultural and history. We select from the best. Participants have the opportunity to stay in rural villages, learn about daytoday life, meet artisans, health care personnel, educators and government officials and visit historic and cultural sites. Those who continue on to the coast can celebrate by relaxing on the beach. Highlights of the Mali program are visits to the renowned Timbuktu (Tombouctou), Mopti and Djenne, the fascinating enclave of the Dogon people, with its many sacred sites and a truly extraordinary riverboat trip on the Niger River. A few of the special features of the programs in the coastal countries are the variety of ethnic groups, visits to museums and markets, historic sites, traditional shrines and countless warm and welcoming rural villages.

A Cultural Revolution in Africa: The Role of Literacy in the Republic of Guinea since Independence Dianne White Oyler, Ph.D. Fayetteville State University. Songs of Souleymane Kanté Ecriture Télé-Enseignement Intervention ... kafa lu serede “Culture is a better means of domination than the gun.” "Ahmed Sékou Touré" At the time of their independence most African nations attempted a process of decolonization in the three spheres of European imperialism, political, economic, and cultural. While this process in the political and economic arenas is apparent, decolonization of the cultural area is much harder to define and to illustrate because European cultural impositions had usurped the areas of language, socialization through education, and technology from simple writing to electronic media. However, in the Republic of Guinea the process can be clearly documented. Its approach to cultural decolonization can be analyzed in light of the more formal “Cultural Revolution” launched by its independence leader Sékou Touré in 1958 as a policy of the First Republic. Touré’s objective was to validate the indigenous cultures that had been denigrated by the Europeans while at the same time creating a Guinean national consciousness. In other words, Touré launched a country-wide campaign to recapture indigenous culture by formally focusing on language and education.

In few other African nations are history and cultureincluding music cultureso profoundly intertwined. Guinea's Atlantic Ocean coast includes the source of the Niger River, which winds north as far as the Sahara desert before turning southward toward its mouth in Nigeria. Upper Guinea participated in a succession of powerful empires, Ghana and Mali early in the second millennium, and the Islamic states of Fouta Djallon and the Tukulor Empire in the 19th century. Music in Guinea Guinea's political and economic woes have undermined one of the richest and most exciting music scenes of the early post-colonial period. So perhaps it's not surprising that Guinean music identifies more strongly with pre-colonial ethnic groupings rather than the nationalism of the modern era. Guinea's great instrumentalists, singers, and traditional pop bands are best thought of as part of a cultural continuum that includes what is now Mali, Gambia, Senegal, Ivory Coast and other countries in the region. Guinea's position as part of the larger Manding diaspora is especially important. In Gambia, the kora rules Manding music; in Mali, it's the ngoni (or koni); in Guinea, the wooden-slatted balafon is the most important instrument for accompanying griot singers. As such, balafon parts find their way into a great deal of Guinean pop. Echoes of Cuba are strong in Guinea's modern music. While this is true to some extent about Manding traditional pop, and much other pop, throughout West Africa, the degree to which Manding melodies and harmonies and Cuban rhythms merged in Guinea is striking. Old and new Guinean pop songs are instantly recognizable because of this characteristic.
