LIGHT Program
The LIGHT Program was initiated as a direct result of the goal of the Board of Trustees to fight drug and alcohol abuse in our schools. The acronym "LIGHT" stands for "Living Intervention and Guidance for Healthier Teens." Symbolically, it is an appropriate name for the program. Just as a candle will provide light in the darkness, LIGHT provides it's own kind of illumination in the times of personal need. The program operates under the umbrella of the Office of Guidance and Counseling. LIGHT Counselors, known as Student Services Specialists, work with students, parents and staff members at all GISD schools. The program's emphasis is on strengthening the educational process through the following methods:
  • Prevention,
  • Identification,
  • Referral,
  • Intervention
  • Support
As a student assistance program, LIGHT counselors provide individual counseling, support groups, classroom presentations, and referral services for students and their families. Any student who is having difficulty at home or at school may be referred to a LIGHT counselor for assistance. The counselor will speak to the student in a confidential manner.

Teaching Your Child
Start Early Give Child Self-Confidence Tailor Teaching to Age Let Child Guide You ... Go to Teaching Links
Start early Two years old is not too early to start teaching your child about safety. A three-year-old can learn how to talk on a telephone and how to make an emergency call (post the number on the wall, and make sure he or she can reach the telephone at all times). Between 3 and 4 years old, a child can learn a home number and address. To help reinforce the child's memory, paste your home phone number on the wall and on the telephone, and practice calling the number from other places. A really great way to reinforce lessons you've taught is to have your child teach you. Pretend to be a younger sibling, or a young friend or play Barbies or dolls and have your child teach you or the dolls how to handle different situations. This forces the child to think and to apply the lessons. Give your child self-confidence Safer Child has provided you with an ever-evolving list of Teaching Links to helpful organizations that work to teach you how to teach and protect your child. Safer Child isn't suggesting you hound your children to a point at which they're afraid of their own shadow. But you can gradually introduce them to the notion that there is the potential for danger. Then, because it wouldn't be fair to tell them that and not give them the self-confidence or skills to cope with it, make sure they know that you (and other caregivers) will protect them, and that, over time, they also can learn how to protect themselves.

Good TEFL Jobs, Good Salaries,
Great Locations The advantages of teaching English abroad
There is a huge global demand for qualified English teachers. Salaries for entry level teachers are above the median earning standard for the country in which you will be teaching. Private free-lance tutoring can bring in enough extra to allow you to save a comfortable amount. Although there have been some recent financial problems in Asian countries, you may still be able to save a comfortable amount each month, especially in Japan and Korea. American citizens with teaching qualifications are in high demand in almost all countries in Latin America. Mexico has moved to the front of the list since NAFTA. Asia continues to be a very high demand area, with Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Indonesia, and Thailand in the forefront. China has also surged forward in offering job openings for English teachers. Vietnam has recently joined the list of Asian countries needing teachers. Eastern Europe and Northern Africa are strong job-hunting areas (Morocco, Tunisia, and Egypt). The more educational degrees you have in any field, the more in demand you will be, especially in Asia.
Requisite Training
Teachers of English are in high demand throughout the world, but it is becoming more and more difficult for those who have no training to simply go abroad and find a job. Our program provides the building blocks you need to begin a new career. First, we provide both theoretical and practical training in the techniques of teaching a foreign language as well as a thorough review of English grammar itself, all of which are essential to anyone who wants to work as an English teacher, either at home or abroad.

Important Tips for Parents and Families
Children need parents and carers to teach them how to make smart choices about who and what they find online. Here are some tips to help you guide your kids experience online:
  • Spend time online with your kids. Check out good sites together. The Internet can be a fun family activity!
Help your kids use the Internet as an effective research tool - learn about handy homework tips for kids and also good searching ideas.
Be aware of online stranger danger, particularly in chat rooms. Set house rules about what information your children can give out and where they can go online.
Put the Internet computer in a public area of the home, such as the living room, rather than a child's bedroom.
Talk to your kids about their Internet experiences, the good and the bad. Let them know it's OK to tell you if they come across something that worries them. (It doesn't mean that they're going to get into trouble.)
Teach your kids that there are ways they can deal with disturbing material - they should not respond if someone says something inappropriate, and they should immediately exit any site if they feel uncomfortable or worried by it.

Customer Reviews I had to put my bits in to complement all the great reviews. Gibilisco indeed does a fantastic job introducing all of the basic concepts of electricity and electronics. The first two parts (550+ pages) are exemplary in their treatment of electronic components. I finally understood how to analyze an LRC circuit!! The second two parts, however, are not nearly as helpful. Perhaps it's because the topics become too complex for the simple presentations use in the first half, but I found the sections on Basic and Advanced Electronics (the last 250+ pages) to be little more than a cursory overview of various components and uses. Good as a very basic introduction, but little practical value.Overall, I enjoyed reading the book and learned a great deal from the first half. The second parts were interesting but less useful.
