Culture
Guatemala's many Mayan ruins and colonial buildings are its most impressive architectural attributes. One of the most intriguing cultural aspects is the infinite and exotic variety of the handmade, traditional clothing of Guatemala's Maya population. The design of the women's colorfully embroidered tunics, capes and skirts dates back to precolonial days. Certain details of garment and design identify the wearer's group and village, and can also have multiple religious or magical meanings. Music and traditional dance also feature in many Mayan religious festivals. Spanish is the most commonly spoken language in Guatemala, and Roman Catholicism is the principal religion. Evangelical and Pentecostal Christian denominations have gained wide followings, while the Maya have preserved aspects of their traditional religions, often blended with Catholicism. Guatemalan cuisine can't compete with that of Mexico, although standard Mexican fare such as tortillas and tacos can be found. Mostly you'll encounter tough grilled or fried meat, meat and more meat. Beans and rice are often the cheapest and best alternative, and the country has a surprising number of Chinese restaurants. Coffee is available everywhere - sometimes spectacularly good, but the best beans are typically exported. Beer is prevalent, in light and dark versions, and rum and Quetzalteca are the nation's favored rocket fuels.

Guatemalan Culture And History: A Brief Survey mestizo (known in Guatemala as ladino Guatemala is the most western of the Central American states, bounded on the west and north by Mexico, on the east by Belize and the Gulf of Honduras, on the southeast by Honduras and El Salvador, and on the south by the Pacific Ocean. Its total area of 108,889 sq km (42,042 (1998) sq mi) makes it the third largest nation in the region, after Nicaragua and Honduras. At its widest points, the republic stretches about 430 km (270 mi) east to west and 450 km (280 mi) north to south. A woman in traditional Maya dress sells fruits and vegetables at a village market in Guatemala. About half of Guatemala's population is of Maya descent, and they have retained a distinct identity, especially in rural areas. Two mountain chains traverse Guatemala from west to east, dividing the country into three major regions: the western highlands, where the mountains are located; the Pacific coast, south of the mountains; and the Petén region, north of the mountains. These areas vary in climate, elevation, and landscape, providing dramatic contrasts between dense tropical lowlands and highland peaks and valleys. A narrow, fertile plain of volcanic soil stretches along the Pacific coast. Once covered with tropical vegetation and grasslands, this area is now developed into plantations where sugar, rubber trees, and cattle are raised.

http://www.mapzones.com/world/central_america/guatemala/cultureindex.php
Country Info Guatemala Introduction Guatemala General Data Guatemala Maps Guatemala Culture ... Guatemala Time and Date Guatemala Culture Back to Top The nation's society is marked by pronounced extremes in the conduct of daily life. In the capital city families live much as they do in the cosmopolitan centres of Europe, whereas within an hour's drive of the capital are Indians whose patterns of daily life remain those of past centuries. The pattern of culture is characterized by sharp contrasts, whether it be in the language spoken or in matters pertaining to the household, cuisine, attire, or family affairs. The contrast between the modern ways of Guatemala City, the center of Guatemalan cultural activity, and the traditional customs and crafts of the Maya peoples gives Guatemala a colorful and dynamic culture. Spanish colonists gave Guatemala its official language and many architectural and art treasures. Magnificent buildings of the colonial period remain at Antigua Guatemala, the colonial capital, located about 40 km (about 25 mi) from Guatemala City. Contemporary crafts such as weaving, jewelry making, and ceramics combine indigenous design and color patterns with Spanish technical skills. Throughout Guatemala, the marimba remains the typical Guatemalan musical medium, although it is often challenged now by Mexican ranchera music and North American rock. The nation's populace is increasingly exposed to the intrusion of foreign influences upon their way of life. All aspects of communication—periodical news, the comics, soap operas, film—are primarily of foreign origin. A multitude of products, from soaps and boxed cereals to automobiles and bottled drinks, bear foreign brand names.

Guatemala History
The ancestors of the Maya gave up hunting, fishing and gathering at some point before 2000 BC and began growing crops. Corn was the reliable staple that allowed the great civilizations of what is now Mexico and Central America to develop, and the Maya inhabited a large area. Their greatest accomplishments were achieved from AD 250 to 800, though their civilization was still in existence when Europeans arrived in the early 1500s. The Spaniards conquered the weak and divided Maya and took control of present-day Guatemala in 1524. During the colonial period, Spanish-born colonists held the reigns of power, but large groups of creoles (Spaniards born in the New World) and mestizos (those of mixed Spanish and indigenous heritage) also developed. At the bottom of the social hierarchy were those of pure Native-American or African heritage. The country gained independence from Spain in the early 1820s and became a republic in 1847. The recent political unrest can be traced to a 1954 coup - assisted by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency - that turned out a democratically elected leftist government. A series of military or military-influenced governments then ruled the country with a heavy hand and resistance became armed and organized. In response to growing popularity of guerrillas among the landless indigenous people in the 1960s, the army unleashed a campaign of terror in which thousands of people were killed and entire villages were massacred. In late 1996, the civil war ended when a series of agreements were signed between the Guatemalan government and guerrilla insurgents. Over its 36-year history, the war claimed the lives of an estimated 140,000 people.

People who have rare money sell their goods on the pavements. Government wanted to prohibe this trade for a long while. But then Guatemala-City would loose one of its best attractions and this order would evoke some big conflicts.
The well-treated National Theatre was new constructed after the big quake in 1976 and it is possible to participate in a tour which shows all of the building complex. You can also admire an open-air-stage from the colonial ages.
In Europe you only get information about war and frightful things which would happen in the Western regions of Guatemala. Also about the average age which would be 32 years. Maybe that this is correct for the Western sector and the jungle. But in the City they have inhabitants with even 90 years.
th Avenue crosses the whole city of Guatemala from the North to the South. The parking-zone on the right belongs to the National Theatre. Behind the trees(RUBIOS) you can see the bridge whereover a passenger train rolls twice in a week to the coffee plantations in the South of Guatemala.
To go by bus in Guatemala is not so comfortable but you can reach with it each place of the whole country. The City has about 100 lines which are managed by 15 companies. But time-tables are not available.
