GEOGRAPHY Guam is about 30 miles long and of variable width, of about 8 miles maximum. It is about 541sq. km. (211 sq.mi.). It is the largest and southernmost island in the Mariana Archipelago. Guam lies about 3,800 Km (2356 mile) southeast of Tokyo, Japan, east of the Philippines, and north of Indonesia. The island chain forms part of the eastern margin of the Philippine Sea. The Island of Guam was created by an uplift of undersea volcanoes and has two distinct geological regions north and south of a narrow waist. The northern half is a coral limestone plateau, while the southern half is generally a mixture of volcanic hills and valleys. The Capital City is Agana, which is the center of Guam. back to top CLIMATE Guam has two seasons, the wet season (July -December) and the dry season (January - June). The differences between these seasons are very subtle. It has been said that Guam gets hit by typhoons very so often that it has been called the "Typhoon Alley". It is nestled in the hatchery of the western Pacific typhoons.

26. Guam's Geography At Ns.gov.gu
The island of guam is approximately 30 miles in length with a variable width, ranging from 12 miles to 4 miles at its narrowest point.
http://ns.gov.gu/geography.html
The island of Guam is approximately 30 miles in length with a variable width, ranging from 12 miles to 4 miles at its narrowest point. The largest island in Micronesia, Guam has a total land mass of 212 square miles, excluding reef formations. Shaped like a footprint, Guam was formed by the union of two volcanoes. The island has two basic geological compositions. Two-thirds of Guam, the central and northern features, are primarily raised limestones with several volcanic formations at Mount Santa Rosa and Mount Mataguak. The northern clifflines drop precipitately into the sea with an elevation ranging from 300 to 600 feet. The southern features are basically volcanic with an elongated mountain ridge dividing the inland valleys and coastline. The highest point is Mount Lamlam with an elevation of 1,334 feet. The Peak of a submerged mountain, Guam, rises 37,820 feet above the floor of the Marianas Trench, the greatest ocean depth in the world. When visiting Guam, hiking up one of its mountains is like scaling a peak higher than Everest. A metal object would take 64 minutes to fall through the Marianas Trench, just east of Guam, with a depth of 6.79 miles, where pressure is over 18,000 pounds per square inch. The Marianas Trench was pinpointed in 1951 by the British Survey Ship Challenger

Guam's History, People and Culture
The island of Guam has an ancient history and rich cultural heritage as evidenced by 118 sites listed on the National and 155 listed on the Guam Registers of Historical Sites Today, Guam is a truly cosmopolitan community that reflects the cultures of its original Chamorro inhabitants influenced by countless European, American, Asian, Micronesian, and other people who have occupied, visited and immigrated to Guam since the 16 th Century. Following is a brief summary of Guam's history and Chamorro folklore that help to shape the unique culture and mix of peoples that is Guam today. The Ancient Chamorro Although the origin of the Chamorro race has never been definitively proven, the original inhabitants of Guam are believed to have been of Indo-Malaya descent originating from Southeast Asia as early as 2,000 BC, and having linguistic and cultural similarities to Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines. The first historical Western document relating the physical features of the Chamorro was

Guam's Climate
The temperature here is pretty constant throughout the year; it's almost always fairly hot (in the high eighties, Fahrenheit). It feels hotter than it actually is because of the high humidity. It gets a little cooler (a few degrees) in the "winter," that is, around January through March. It is never cold or even close to it, although people who have lived here awhile complain they are freezing on those rare days when the temperature drops down into the 70s. The only way to get cold on Guam is to go into places with air conditioning. Some places go nuts with AC. My classroom at the University of Guam, for example, is so cold that students have been known to come to class wearing parkas and gloves. Guam has two seasons, the wet season (July - December) and the dry season (January - June). For people accustomed to temperate zone climates, the differences between these seasons are subtle. Some years we have a wet dry season or a dry wet season, making the distinction even less obvious. During the dry season, the winds typically intensify. These are the trade winds. The weather may be dry enough so that the grass turns brown and we get a lot of brush fires. Intermittent streams may dry up. During the wet season, we get rain several times a day.

The southern part of the island is mountainous, rising on Mt. Lamlam to 1,332 ft (406 m). Agana is the seat of government, and Apra Harbor, a large U.S. naval base, is nearby. The interior of the island is dense jungle; most of the villages are on the coast. Guamanians are U.S. citizens but cannot vote in U.S. elections. Guam's permanent inhabitants are predominantly of native Chamorro stock (37%) or Filipino descent (26%); the rest of the population mainly consists of roughly equal numbers of other Pacific Islanders, Caucasians, and other persons of Asian descent. The people are overwhelmingly Roman Catholic and speak English, Chamorro, and Japanese; English and Chamorro are official languages. Efforts to preserve the Chamorro language began in the 1990s. Some one fourth of the population consists of U.S. military personnel and their dependents. Providing goods and services for the huge U.S. bases is the major industry. Tourism, especially from Japan, is also important. Most inhabitants practice subsistence farming, but large-scale agriculture is no longer possible because military installations occupy so much land. Local leaders began pressing for access to military land in the 1990s, and several facilities have been turned over.
