II. Guadeloupe Geography Guadeloupe is a group of islands in the Lesser Antilles island chain of the eastern Caribbean. It is 4,300 miles (6,000 kilometers) southwest of France and about 370 miles (592 km) north of Venezuela. The main islands of Guadeloupe are situated between the island of Montserrat to the north and the island republic of Dominica to the South. In contrast, Grande-Terre is a low-lying, limestone island with hills no higher than 490 feet (148 meters) and no rivers. Coral reefs protect its wide, white-sand beaches. Guadeloupe has two seasons. The dry season, sometimes called the "Creole lent", lasts from October through May. The remainder of the year is the rainy season. Hurricanes frequently blow up from the south during the rainy season and have damaged much property over theyears. Basse-Terre has many hardwood forests with valuable trees. Coffee, vanilla, bananas, and cacao also grow there. Farmers cultivate sugarcane on the plains of Grande-Terre and raise cattle, sheep, goats and pigs in the highlands. Wildlife is not abundant, as the mongoose, a small Asian rodent originally imported to kill snakes, has killed many native species. Continue Main Menu

These islands curve southward from the bottom tip of Florida to the Northwest of Venezuela in South America. There are at least 7000 islands, islets, reefs and cayes in the region. They are organized into twenty-five territories including sovereign states, overseas departments and dependencies. The name "West Indies" originates from Christopher Columbus' idea that he had landed in India when he had in fact reached the Americas. The Caribbean consists of the Antilles and the Bahamas and is part of North America.

The department comprises the islands of Basse-Terre (Guadeloupe proper) and Grande-Terre, and the dependencies of Marie-Galante and Iles des Saintes to the south, La DEsirade to the east, and Saint-BarthElemy ("Saint Bart's") and the northern half of Saint Martin to the north. Basse-Terre , on the island of the same name, is Guadeloupe's capital; Pointe-A-Pitre , on Grande-Terre, is the chief port and commercial center. The islands have a mild, humid climate and are subject to hurricanes. Tourism is the major industry. Agriculture, sugar and rum production, and service industries are also important. Basse-Terre, volcanic in origin and extremely rugged, is settled along the coasts and produces bananas, coffee, cacao, and vanilla beans. Grande-Terre has low limestone cliffs and little rainfall; sugar and rum are its chief products. Subsistence farming, livestock raising, and fishing are carried on, and some salt and sulfur are mined. France additionally provides many subsidies to Guadeloupe. The population is mainly of African or mixed descent and largely Roman Catholic. French and a Creole patois are spoken. The head of government is a commissioner appointed by France. The legislature consists of a 36-member, popularly elected general council and a regional council.
