Groundhog Day
Jugglers Festival 2004 Atlanta, GA February 6-8
(more pictures coming soon) The 26th annual Groundhog Day Jugglers Festival drew 171 jugglers, some from as far away as Brazil, Canada and Seattle. Horizons School graciously hosted the festival when a last-minute construction delay forced us out of Grady High School. Quick action by several long-time members saved the day, although the juggling space was notably cramped this year. The t-shirt this year was designed by Joyce Howard; its theme of "Peace, Love, Juggling" was inspired by a rec.juggling article which claimed that the Groundhog Day Jugglers Festival is where all the old hippies went after the 60's. The fun started Friday afternoon with the usual Groundhog chores of setting up vendors, moving signs and tables, and other tasks needed to put on a big festival. At 5 pm jugglers started trickling in and soon the gym floor was bopping along with the usual collection of spinning, tossing and teetering props plus catching and dropping hands. The vendors and most spectators took advantage of the upper floor which offered a fine view of the proceedings and a respite from the intensity of the small floor. The gym closed a little after 10 pm Friday night as Dave Altman chased stragglers out by cracking an 8-foot bullwhip in the space. Saturday morning featured a small but intense unicycle polo game in the back quarter of the gym. Lots of memorable club passing took place as well. The left-right patterns pioneered by Martin Frost are making their way through much of the Groundhog passing groups. Many people worked on left-right variants of familiar patterns including 3-count stars, various permutations of left-right feeds, and 3-count rotating feeds. Individual pairs also worked odd counts, such as the "four-three count", which works out to rightpass-self-rightpass, self-self, leftpass-self-leftpass. Rick Purtee helped teach a number of people these new and interesting variants.

Trivia for
Groundhog Day
  • Murray was bitten by the groundhog twice during the filming of this movie.
    Somewhere in Time (1980)

In one scene, Connors throws himself from the bell tower of a high building. This building is actually an opera house in Woodstock, Illinois. Local legend has it that a young girl once committed suicide by throwing herself from the same bell tower. Her ghost is supposed to haunt the opera house. 'Murray, Bill' and Harold Ramis have both been Honorary Grand Marshals for the Groundhog Day celebrations in Punxsatawney, PA. Harold Ramis At one point in the red Eldorado chase scene, Bill Murray and friends were to race along the sidewalk in front of the movie theater, barely missing the ticket booth, which was still occupied. The scene was filmed, but left on the cutting room floor. Phil Connors goes through February 2nd, 34 times. There were many more days implied, for example how he knew everyone so well in the diner, but only 34 days were actually shown.

We're sharing weather data and much more! Here are some of the highlights of our project... The Kick-Off ~ February 2, 2004 ~ Groundhog Day! The first order of business for the day was to name our groundhog. There were some terrific suggestions. All were written on the board and then everyone voted. As you can see from the graph below, "Brownie" was the winner.
See Create a Graph for easy graph creation.
Shadow or no shadow, that was the next question! In preparation for the big day,
we had made groundhog stick puppets
SO...
before we even left the classroom,
we knew the answer to the question!
Once outside the bad news was confirmed!
Six MORE weeks of winter! The GOOD news was that the sun allowed us much shadow experimentation with our stick puppets. How could we make the thinnest, longest shadow? How about the fattest, shortest? Great scientific observations about placement and the angle of the sun were abundant! To help cheer us after the bad news, we enjoyed delicious groundhog cookies at snack. (a BIG THANK YOU to Winston's mom!) >

The History of Groundhog Day
On February 2nd, the groundhog comes out of his hole to take a look. If he sees his shadow, he will crawl back into his home for another six weeks of winter. If he does not see his shadow, then winter is over. At least that is how the legend goes. The basis of the tradition is thought to stem from rhymes about the religious observance of Candlemas, or the purification of the Virgin Mary. Despite the source of the rhyme, there is no religious connection to the ritual gathering about the holes of groundhogs to see if they observe a shadow. Here is one of these rhymes: If Candlemas Day be fair and bright,
Winter will have another flight;
But if it be dark with clouds and rain,
Winter is gone and will not come again.
The reliance on an animal to determine the end of winter comes out of Germany, as well as England and Scotland. In Germany, the badger was the creature capable of predicting the weather and the end of the winter season. Finding no such animals in the new world, the groundhog was chosen as the substitute. Although groundhogs throughout the country are the subject of gatherings and news stories on February 2nd, prince of the day is Punxsutawney Phil, who resides in Puxsutawney, Pennsylvania.
