New Internationalist
August, 2002 by James Ferguson
IT is almost 20 years ago that the tiny Caribbean nation of Grenada briefly occupied the world stage with images of invading marines and celebrating islanders. But as 6,000 US troops took possession of an island of fewer than 100,000 people in October 1983, there was confusion as to where the action was actually taking place. Viewers of Soviet television news bulletins were disconcerted to learn that American forces had invaded southern Spain and taken the Andalucian city of Granada. Grenada's emergence from international obscurity was the culmination of four turbulent years of revolution and social experimentation. The New Jewel Movement, a group of young radicals, had ousted the dictatorial Eric Gairy in March 1979 and introduced long-overdue reforms for the island's impoverished majority. The revolutionary government, and especially its charismatic leader Maurice Bishop, won support at home and abroad, but the US viewed developments, particularly an alignment with Cuba, with deep suspicion. In the end, the revolution imploded in factional in-fighting, Bishop and several supporters were murdered and a short-lived and hated military council was swept away by the marines.

88. Susan Mains: THE VISUAL ARTS IN GRENADA
The conditions are superb for a cultural awakening. It is a time to invest in grenada sculture and proudly interpret it visually and display it as our own.

The Visual Arts in Grenada: A Sustainable Resource
Susan Mains
Painting by Susan Mains, click on picture to see a larger image One of the most defining moments of my artistic career was when an officer attached to the Ministry of Culture turned down the Art Council's request for funding to send an exhibit overseas. The reply given was, "Art is not a part of culture." Since that time more than five years ago, I have observed in many ways that visual art is the "outside child" of our institutional cultural milieu. When I returned to Grenada to live permanently in 1992, I immediately began to paint scenes from Grenada, and exhibit with the Grenada Arts Council. For many, many years the Grenada Art Council had hosted an annual show at Marryshow House. As a teenager I had visited the exhibit every year - admiring the work, longing to know the secrets of the artists - how did they do that? I believe that my history is typical of that of many small islanders; the desire to create art very strong, yet the opportunity, limited. The reality of the state of visual art in Grenada is that it enjoys no institutional support. Following are some examples of this.

Grenada - dubbed the 'Spice Island' because of its impressive production of nutmeg, mace, cinnamon, ginger and cloves, it has a rugged mountainous interior of rainforests and waterfalls and an indented coastline with protected bays and beaches. Its capital, St George's, has one of the prettiest harbour settings in the Caribbean
Tourist infrastructure is still generally small-scale and locally owned, offering a good balance between comfort and price, making Grenada a great getaway for those travellers wanting to avoid the Caribbean resort experience. The secret to a successful visit to Grenada is to mix up the beach (in)activity with getting out and about in the island's interior with a good pair of hiking boots.

Grenada is a rolling, mountainous island, covered with fragrant spice trees and rare tropical flowers. Bordered by stunning beaches, and dotted with picturesque towns, this verdant island has long been a major source of nutmeg, cloves, ginger, cinnamon, and cocoa. The seductive drifts through the colourful Saturday markets and Grenada's dense forests. In the interior of this volcanic island are cascading rivers and waterfalls, lush rainforests, and one of the most breathtakingly beautiful mountain lakes imaginable. The capital, St. George's, is widely held to be the loveliest city in the Caribbean. Its horseshoe-shaped harbour is surrounded by a pastel rainbow of dockside warehouses and the red-tiled roofs of traditional shops and homes.
