http://www.settlement.org/cp/english/grenada/grentoca.html
G RENADA T O C ANADA E very year thousands of people come from all over the world to live in Canada. They bring skills and resources that contribute to life in Canada. Perhaps you are a worker or a volunteer with the HOST Program or you are planning to employ someone who has newly immigrated, or perhaps you just want to learn about a new culture. Whatever your reason, this website will provide helpful information and will introduce you to Grenada and to Grenadians. L ike many newcomers to Canada, Grenadians arrive with mixed feelings. Many of them are educated people who were well established back home. They leave behind friends and family, so they are sad to leave Grenada. At the same time, they appreciate the opportunity to make a new life in Canada. Did you know? Canada and Grenada both became British colonies in the same year, 1763. T he lifestyle of Canadians may seem strange to newly arrived Grenadians. The climate can be difficult to get used to, since there are no winters or cold temperatures in their home country. In addition, they need to learn how to get around and where to find doctors and hospitals, schools, banks and other services in their new home. Their needs are the same as yours would be if you moved to a new country. T he most important things you can offer your Grenadian friends are your time, concern and friendship. You will find that they have much to give in return, and you will both learn and benefit from the friendship.

Several additional affiliated faculty participate in the program on a routine basis.
The Grenada program is appropriate for sophomore, junior, and senior students in the areas of human development, Africana studies, education, psychology and other majors in the humanities, social sciences, sciences, and professional schools as well as graduate students from human development. Advanced first year students are eligible to participate in the program with special permission from the program director. Students are required to complete an application, submit one letter of reference and official academic transcript, and have an individual interview. Students attending schools from a far distance from Binghamton University may arrange for an individual telephone interview and will submit two letters of reference. The program director must receive all applications along with official academic transcripts and letters of reference by Friday, February 6, 2004. Applications received following the deadline will be considered only if there is space available in the program. The program director strongly recommends early application as enrollment to the program is limited.

    Is There Racism in Grenada?
Introduction Of course there is . . . and because discussions of racism are so touchy this is an opinionated essay by Ann Wilder. And, I suggest, and this is a very important suggestion, that race does not exist except as a figment of political reality. Needless to say, a discussion of race compels us to proceed. People continue to group others into their own preconception. Acknowledgements Acknowledged: Leaps and bounds of improvement concerning the lessening of overt racism in Grenada over time and a 98+ percentage of Blacks in the population [using the US predominant one-drop theory of blackness] exist today. Acknowledged: When talking about race, be aware that a person may be discussing ethnicity, culture, colour, gender and/or class. Gairy and Black Power It is in all probability that racism did not play as large a role in the Bishop Government than racism did during the Gairy regime. It was Gairy who made the charge as far back as 1951 that in the Grenada civil service the doors were closed to dark-skinned Grenadians. Gairy's speech occurred after the February-April 1970 'February Movement' in Trinidad with its line of continuity extending from the US Black Power Movement. At the same time, according to Tafari, "For [Walter] Rodney—as for [the Oilfield Workers Trade Union] OWTU and to a lesser extent, [National Joint Action Committee] NJAC—the notion of 'black' actually corresponded more broadly to 'non-white,' and hence embraced both East Indian and African workers and peasants, whose common interests sprung from the fact of being dispossessed classes."

Warm, gentle tradewinds rustle palm fronds above a sugary white sand beach lining a turquoise sea. Brightly colored sailboats splash across picture-perfect bays; the scent of tropical fruits fills the air along with the bouncing rhythms of reggae and calypso music. To most people, these cliché tourism industry advertising images are what the Caribbean is all about. Most visits made to the Caribbean by outsiders are spent either on cruise ships or in the artificial environments of all-inclusive hotels. This study abroad program is about learning how to see a different Caribbean, and gives HSU students an opportunity to live and study in a unique region of the world. The entire program will take place in the small Eastern Caribbean nation of Grenada (located 90 miles north of South America).

    Press Release:
    Grenada Got it
    Carriacou Got It

And in a nutshell, people. Gelling and uniting people. People of Carriacou and Petite Martinique. People of Grenada and the wider Caribbean. Celebrating our indomitable spirit, a spirit that will never die. That is the energy of Maroons in Carriacou, bringing people together, eating, drinking, dancing and celebrating.
At the completion of the project, well over $1million XCD will be invested on the development with the Board being the main contributor along with several corporate sponsors, community stakeholders and some direct inputs from Government of Grenada.
Against this background, we invite you to participate and indeed celebrate with us Carriacou Maroon Festival 2004.
The Friday is an all day Maroon celebration. Witness the pre-dawn food celebrations with its paraphernalias and libations. Even the killing of the animals is pregnant with rituals.
At 6:00AM watch the wetting of the ground and the sounding of horns. Then the hectic pace begins. Huge pots astride on three-stones. The tri-contraption reminds us of food, music and dancing, or earth, sea and air. The drums shall be ringing all day long, non-stop. The rice and coo-coo rolling, and this is by no means an easy feat. Bask in a scintillating aroma of smoke-food that will leave you captivated if not hypnotize. And when you think that it is all over, the drumming and music will cast its final magical spell into the midnight hour. What happens next is left to your imagination and desires.
