It was a memorable trip. We learned a lot about a culture we knew little of before. Thank you. ARCTIC CULTURE Cultures of the North The people native to the coastal regions of Labrador, Greenland, The Northwest Territories, Alaska and northeastern Siberia, have many cultural traits in common that differ from those of adjacent Indian tribes. The word "Eskimo" comes from eskipot, an Algonquian word meaning "an eater of raw flesh." Some Eskimos feel this attribution puts them in a poor light with modern audiences and prefer to use other terms. The most widely used is "Inuit" which really refers specifically to the Eskimos of the eastern Canadian Arctic. In the Bering Sea region, Eskimos prefer to be called "Yup'ik," while the North Slope Alaska Eskimos prefer "Inupiat" and Mackenzie Delta Eskimos prefer "Inuvialuit." (The word "Eskimo" will be used occasionally to refer to all native Arctic people.) Physically Eskimos belong to the Mongoloid stock, with dark eyes, strait black hair, and brownish skin. Generally, they tend to be short, stocky people with small feet and hands and relatively short limbs. Their faces are fleshy with a large lower jaw and a low bridged nose. They frequently display the epicanthic eye fold that indicates their comparatively recent Asian origin (more recent than that of the American Indian.) Their facial characteristics and bodily proportions, along with an elevated basal metabolism, reveal a degree of genetic response to the cold environment. However, it was their traditional high-fat diet and the highly insulated clothing they wore, which more greatly contributed to their success in the Arctic.

8-04-03: Hot Topics HNN Poll: Are Evangelicals Winning the Culture War Over Religion?
In a recent issue of the Baltimore Sun the editors reviewed the history of the famous Scopes Monkey Trial (1925), which pitted William Jennings Bryan against Clarence Darrow. "At the time," they wrote, "the trial was seen as a monumental test for a changing America, with the 20th century, science and city ways challenging the 19th century, fundamentalist religious beliefs and rural mores." Today, "the trial serves to remind of other things as well: how Christian fundamentalism, ridiculed unmercifully then, has become an important part of America's religious and political life, and how U.S. newspaper writing has changed." Our poll this week asks: Did evangelicals win the religious culture war? If so, how did this happen? H.L. Mencken, July 9, 1925, in the Baltimore Sun On the eve of the great contest Dayton is full of sickening surges and tremors of doubt. Five or six weeks ago, when the infidel Scopes was first laid by the heels, there was no uncertainty in all this smiling valley. The town boomers leaped to the assault as one man. Here was an unexampled, almost a miraculous chance to get Dayton upon the front pages, to make it talked about, to put it upon the map. But how now? Today, with the curtain barely rung up and the worst buffooneries to come, it is obvious to even town boomers that getting upon the map, like patriotism, is not enough. The getting there must be managed discreetly, adroitly, with careful regard to psychological niceties. ... Two months ago the town was obscure and happy. Today it is a universal joke.

It was published in Vol 32, no. 2 [1995] pp118-26 issue of Arctic Anthropology. Permission to reprint from the author and publisher is gratefully acknowledged]
Abstract. The concept of colonialism and its effects are discussed from the point of view of Greenlandic experience. Problems arise when the ideology of the colonizers is adopted by the colonized peoples themselves, especially by the educated individuals who are more likely to be employed in positions of influence. Colonialistic attitudes and policies persisted in Greenland even after the end of the colonial period and the establishment of Home Rule. Neo-colonialism and internal colonialism are compared.
    Introduction
Within the past few decades, much has been written about colonialism in the circumpolar arctic region. Colonialism in this region is often referred to as neocolonialism or internal colonialism. As a native Greenlander, trained in anthropology, I have spent much of my life and professional career dealing with the issue of colonialism and the impact it had on Greenlandic culture and identity. In this paper, I would like to examine some issues concerning the Danish colonial administration in Greenland, in terms of attitude and behavior. I examine the point of view of the colonial civil servants, as well as the Greenlandic public and politicians, during the formal colonial period and after 1953, when the formal colonial state ceased, and on into the first decade of Home Rule in Greenland.

Greenland is the world's largest island, 2,175,600 square kilometres in area, of which 1,833,900 sq km is locked into the glacial icecap. The land is characterized by deeply indented fjords and high mountains. The length of the longest fjord is fully 400 kilometres, and the highest mountain rises 3,733 metres. Some of the fjords have active glaciers which produce the largest icebergs in the northern hemisphere. The coastal waters and the non-glaciated land support a variety of fish, sea mammals, birds and mammals. Greenland's present population is believed to have originated with the Inuit of Northern Alaska, who migrated to Greenland approximately 1,000 years ago. The land had previously been populated by various North American cultures and by Vikings from Iceland but, presumably owing to climatic changes, it has been the present Inuit population who have survived. There are also approximately 10,000 Danish residents in the country. The population is now about 56,000 of which 14,000 reside in the capital city, Nuuk. The principal occupations are fishing and the hunting of birds and sea mammals. In South Greenland there is a modest amount of farming concentrating on the raising of sheep supplemented by some fishing. New occupational activities centre around tourism, which is gaining a foothold in some places.

Inuit Applaud Historic Ratification Vote. Fourth and Final Inuit Comprehensive Land Claim Agreement Ratified: Cause for Celebration
OTTAWA - Thursday May 27, 2004 - Inuit celebrate today following the successful ratification of the Labrador Final Agreement on May 26, 2004. The Agreement was ratified by 76.4 percent of eligible voters, marking the end of a long chapter in the negotiations of comprehensive land claim agreements for Inuit in Canada. The claim was originally filed in 1977, taking 27 years to negotiate and ratify. "On behalf of all Inuit in Canada, this is indeed an historic moment," said Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami President Jose Kusugak. "Congratulations to Inuit of Nunatsiavut, the Inuktitut name for the Labrador region. Congratulations to the past and present Inuit leaders and staff at the Labrador Inuit Association who have worked tirelessly over the years. This day has been a long time coming, and it is an important step in developing the Nunatsiavut region. This is a cause for all Inuit to celebrate your achievement, as you have shared in the accomplishments of Nunavik, Inuvialuit, and Nunavut over the past 30 years. Today, Inuit are indeed "Tapiriit" (united)." This is the fourth comprehensive Land Claim Agreement signed by Inuit in Canada. The first was the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement, signed November 11, 1975 by Inuit in the Nunavik region of Northern Quebec. That was followed in the 1980s when the Inuvialuit Final Agreement was signed on June 5, 1984. In the early 1990s the Nunavut Final Agreement was signed on May 27, 1993.

Greenland is blessed with a peaceable people that has never waged war with anyone, and people generally show great openness to visitors.
The population of Greenland is predominantly Inuit, a people bearing an affinity and solidarity with the Inuits of Canada, Alaska and Siberia. It is only 140 years since the last immigration from Canada took place.
The Greenlandic people are few in number: 56,000 in an enormous country. Approx. 20 percent of the population was born outside Greenland.
Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, but since the introduction of Home Rule in 1979 Greenland has moved towards relative independence based on parliamentary democracy.
Today fishing is the all-dominating trade and accounts for 95 percent of total exports, but in the hunter districts of the outer areas, the seal and whale catch is of great importance. It actually forms the stable existence for one fifth of the Greenlandic population. For millennia the philosophy has been to live at one with nature. The hunters live with nature and follow the natural seasons.
In South Greenland ruins from the norse (viking) settlers 1,000 years ago are well preserved, including the ruins of the first Christian churches on the North America continent.

    Rules of the mountain side
The internationally familiar 10 rules of the mountain are highly relevant to Greenland, too.
    • Don't start off on long walks without some previous training
    • Let someone know where you're heading and when you expect to be back
    • Pay heed to the weather and the weather reports
    • Listen to experienced mountaineers
    • Be prepared for bad weather and accidents, even on short walks
    • Always remember a map and a compass
    • Never go alone
    • Turn back in good time
    • Conserve your strength; look for shelter while there's still time
    • Always take along the neccesary emergency gear
These 10 rules can be supplemented with the following useful tips:
    • The most important safety gear is between your ears
    • Prevention is better than cure
    • Always be capable of helping yourself and others
    • Match your planning to your ability
    • Listen to your body and intuition
    • Look at the map, get your bearings and always be aware of where you are
    • Be aware: notice the landmarks in the landscapes you pass through
    • If in doubt, choose the safest solution

(And Greenland, Too) Greenlanders can't imagine a land more beautiful than Greenland. They may be right about that. While travelling with Greenlanders we discovered that, like ourselves, they often stop to look at the scenery. Most villages in Greenland have a well-worn path or even sets of steps that lead to a vantage point with the best view. We are "packaging" some easy ways to get to Greenland. We've often sent travelers as side trips from Iceland and now that we've visited Greenland and talked to guides and outfitters we can explain the choices that our clients will be making in traveling there. (One of us [BV] built several Greenlandic kajaks last summer - but that is another story.) East Greenland. It's relatively easy to reach, it offers a glimpse of a culture far removed from the modern "busyness" world and very few people have seen and experienced landscapes like this. If you have the inclination, and the time, you can also get over to the West Coast and see some traces of the Viking settlements from 1,000 years ago, as well as some very impressive scenery. The East coast of Greenland is called "Tunu" It's a Greenlandic word that means the "back "of the country.
