Greenland Introduction Back to Top Greenland, also Kalaallit Nunaat (Danish, Grønland), island, internally self-governing part of Denmark, situated between the North Atlantic and Arctic oceans. Greenland lies mostly north of the Arctic Circle and is separated from the Canadian Arctic Archipelago, on the west, primarily by the Davis Strait and Baffin Bay, and from Iceland, on the east, by the Strait of Denmark. The largest island in the world, Greenland has a maximum length, from its northernmost point on Cape Morris Jesup to Cape Farewell in the extreme south, of about 2,655 km (1,650 mi). The maximum distance from east to west is about 1,290 km (800 mi). The length of Greenland's coast, which is deeply indented with fiords, is estimated at 5,800 km (3,600 mi). The total area of Greenland is approximately 2,175,600 sq km (840,000 sq mi), of which about 84 per cent, or some 1,834,000 sq km (708,000 sq mi), is ice cap. The capital is Nuuk. The days are still very long but the colours on the tundra are autumnal reds and yellows. We will see the resident mammals such as Muskoxen, seals, and, hopefully, Narwhals. Culture and Community Culture Basically, our cultural identity rests on close contact with nature and on traditional sealing and fishing, although only a small number of Greenlanders still live directly on these resources. This is reflected in the old legends, recorded - first and foremost - by the Arctic explorer, Knud Rasmussen, and illustrated in applied art, pictorial art and sculpture. Language Greenlandic/kalaallisut is closely related to the language of the Inuits in Canada and Alaska. Greenlandic belongs to the East-Eskimo family of languages and is a polysyntetic language, ie the meaning-forming sentence elements of other languages are fused into a single word which may be very long. This word may be the equivalent of a whole sentence in one of the ie Scandinavian languages. Church and religion The established church in Greenland is the Danish National Evangelical Lutheran Church. In 1993 Greenland became an independent Home Rule administered diocese with its own bishop. There are other religious communities and sects, including the Catholic Church, the Adventist Community, the Pentecostal Movement and its ramifications, the Bahai Community, Jehovah's Witnesses and others.

Whaling - a Part of our Culture
Whaling is part of our culture and history. Like other forms of hunting, whaling is an important part of our present-day life, and for us is both a symbol and a living reality. But whaling has now become a symbol for many people in the western world. The whales have become a symbol of how human beings should treat living resources. This led to the so-called "moratorium" which meant a five-year total ban on all commercial whaling. During those five years extensive biological survey were carried out which showed that a number of whale stocks are far more plentiful than was believed just a few years ago. Nevertheless, strong economic and political forces are working to extend the whaling moratorium. In certain circles, the whaling issue has become a matter of ethics. If this attitude becomes widespread it can become a problem for Greenland. Greenland is part of the international community - also when it comes to whaling. So we must cooperate and negotiate with other countries and peoples, even if we disagree with them in their view of whaling.

EAST GREENLAND
The far north town of Ittoqqortoormiit (Scoresbysund) and the National Park are not often visited by tourists. In fact, there is no admission to the National Park except for the locals and the town has now only 550 inhabitants and few services. The main tourist areas in East Greenland are the town of Ammassalik (Tasiilaq) and the nearby village of Kulusuk where the airport is located. Kulusuk is a very popular one-day excursion for tourists visiting Iceland due to its proximity. The tours we offer to East Greenland start and end in Reykjavik, Iceland. In 2004, for East Greenland we offer 4-day tours with a combination of Ammassalik and Kulusuk, 3- day tours to Tasiilaq and 2-day tours to Kulusuk. We also offer the one-day excursion to Kulusuk allowing a visit to Greenland without ever checking out of your hotel in Reykjavik. There are many local excursions to choose from in East Greenland. Please see the list following the tour. These excursions can only be ordered and paid for during your stay and operate based on weather and capacity restrictions. Your “Destination Guides” are on hand to assist you at your hotel with information on the excursions.

    INUIT CULTURE TEACHER GUIDE Overview:
In this lesson, students will learn about the Inuit and their culture. Students will view photographs, read dispatches, listen to sample Inuit phrases, and read the work of three Inuit writers describing their culture. Based on the information they gather, students will create a radio broadcast interview. If you do not have access to a tape recorder, students can conduct their radio interviews 'live' in front of the class. The goal of this activity is for students to synthesize information from a variety of sources while creating an interview that captures important elements of the Inuit culture. Designed as a Language Arts lesson for students in grades 6-8.
    Activity:
  • Ask students to create a class KWLH chart on the topic of Inuits. You might have to explain that in the past Inuits were often referred to as Eskimos. In the "K" section of the chart, students will list things that they KNOW about Inuits. In the "W" section of the chart, students will list things they WANT to know about Inuits, and in the "L" section of the chart, students will list what they have LEARNED about Inuits. In the "H" section of the chart, students will verify HOW or where they learned the information. Display the chart in the room and have students add new information to the chart as they learn about the Inuit.
  • Share the photographs of Tasiilaq, the largest town in eastern Greenland

    http://www.itk.ca/english/inuit_canada/history/unity.htm
Our 5000 Year History o ur heritage cultural unity cultural origins ... two worlds meet Unity of Culture and Language As Inuit we divide ourselves into two closely related groups based on language, environmental factors and certain cultural features. The first is the Yupik who occupy coastal southwestern Alaska, Nunivak and St. Lawrence islands and a small sector of the southeastern Chukchi Peninsula. There are approximately 25,000 Yupik living in Alaska and 1,300 in Russia. Although the Yupik language has the same origin as ours, it is not understood by Inuit. Besides language there are many other cultural features that distinguish Yupik from Inupiat and Inuit. The second group includes the Inupiat of north Alaska and eastern Russia, the Inuit of Canada, and the Inuit of Greenland. Of these 152,000 Inuit, 2,000 live in Russia, 50,000 in Alaska, 45,000 in Canada and 55,000 in Greenland. Although certain differences in culture and language should be expected over such a vast expanse of Arctic territory, one of the truly amazing aspects of our culture is the extent of similarity from one group to another as you travel from the eastern shore of Greenland west across what is now Canada and Alaska to the shores of Siberia.
