Ancient Greece
Ancient Greece Homer Sparta Athens ... Alexander the Great Greek Mythology The ancient Greeks were polytheistic. This means they believed in many gods. Writers and artists use the stories and symbols of Greek myths to this day. While we no longer view the myths as religion, many people still enjoy reading them. Today, most people who live in the Western Hemisphere believe in one god. People who believe in one god are monotheistic.
Myths are traditional stories. The Greeks used myths to explain things they did not understand. At first, myths were passed down from generation to generation by word of mouth. Later, Greek poets created epic stories based on those legends. An epic is a long poem about great heroes and their deeds.
The Greek gods lived atop Mount Olympus, the highest mountain in Greece. Zeus was the head of the family of gods. He ruled the sk

Background The stories of the Greek myths are all that remain of an ancient religion. The gods and goddesses of stories represent the metaphors that the ancient Greeks used to make sense of the world around them and of life in general. Those metaphors provided inspiration for a wealth of literature. Since the ancient Greeks began telling these stories in a pre-literate era (before they had writing), at first the stories were passed down from generation to generation in an oral tradition. The story of the Odyssey, for example, is supposed to have been composed by a blind poet named Homer. Today scholars suspect there was more than one "Homer" who helped shape the final epic, as different storytellers added or subtracted details or episodes. Once poets and dramatists began writing the stories down, they preserved them for future generations. What they preserved, though, is the story as they told it. So we must look at the stories as both religion and literature at the same time. We must treat them with respect. You will understand the great Greek epic poem The Odyssey much better if you have a working knowledge of the gods and goddesses. We will spend this week researching and presenting what we have learned. At the end of the week, we will have a Greek (pitch-in) feast!

Jupiter means:
In astronomy mythology, Jupiter known as Zeus in Greece over threw his father Saturn to become king of the gods. He then split the Universe with his brothers Neptune and Pluto. How much would you weigh on Jupiter?
If you traveled to Jupiter on vacation you would be very heavy. If you weigh 70 pounds on the Earth, on Jupiter you would weigh 185 pounds. The Planet:
Jupiter's great red spot visible in the picture to the right is where a giant storm has been raging for at least 300 years. It's super hurricane winds blow across an area larger than the Earth.
This giant planet has no solid surface. Under it's atmosphere is a large liquid ocean of hydrogen and water. What lies in between that ocean and the atmosphere? Actually there is no in between. The atmosphere slowly gets thicker and thicker until it becomes part of the ocean. In other words Jupiter's ocean has no surface on which you could float a boat. The sky slowly becomes the ocean. Moons:
Jupiter has 28 moons. Their names are Metis, Adrastea, Amalthea, Thebe, Io, Europa, Ganymede, Callisto, Sinope, Leda, Himalia, Lysithea, Elara, Ananke, Carme, Pasiphae W1302, W1700, W1704, W1704_2, W1800, W1903_s, W1805, W1902, W1904, W2002_2, and W1700_2.

... Inspire others to be Good People Essential Question: What does it mean to be a good person? Introduction: So, does anyone know what it means to be a good person? I mean we hear about an awful lot of people who are not so good? You know! That bully who was hitting all those kids or the person that was always calling people names or that student that got caught cheating on her exams. What we don't hear about a lot are those examples of people who is a truly good, the heroes. So, I ask you, what does it mean to be a good person?
I propose that we hold a Greek-style symposium to develop an answer to this difficult question. We will work together to share our different ideas and develop a reasonable answer to our question, "What does it mean to be a good person?" As the host of our symposium, I will be the first to share my own opinions. After that, you will be free to question my ideas through statements, arguments, or ideas of your own. Remember, all participants of a symposium must be respectful to one another and really listen to each others ideas.
I believe that the answer to our difficult question "what does it mean to be a good person?" lies hidden in Ancient Greek myths. This idea that we can learn from a culture that is so old may sound like a strange idea but listen and I will explain my reasoning. The Ancient Greeks had a society where they were free to think for themselves, openly discuss their ideas, and express their opinions. And they did think deeply about many questions and dilemmas that they were facing. The greatest of the thinkers were called philosophers, which means "Lovers of Knowledge." You may be familiar with some of the Ancient Greek Philosophers; Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle.

Owls in Greek Mythology
In the mythology of ancient Greece, Athene, the Goddess of Wisdom, was so impressed by the great eyes and solemn appearance of the Owl that, having banished the mischievous crow, she honoured the night bird by making him her favourite among feathered creatures. Athene's bird was a Little Owl Athene noctua ). This Owl was protected and inhabited the Acropolis in great numbers. It was believed that a magical "inner light" gave Owls night vision. As the symbol of Athene, the Owl was a protector, accompanying Greek armies to war, and providing ornamental inspiration for their daily lives. If an Owl flew over Greek Soldiers before a battle, they took it as a sign of victory. The Little Owl also kept a watchful eye on Athenian trade and commerce from the reverse side of their coins.

http://www.candleartgifts.com/
MPS is pleased to introduce a new line of unique candle art gifts. Experience the breathtaking beauty of our line of candle sculptures. Here are just some of the candles we offer: The process of producing these sculpted candles is a long and difficult one requiring great skill. First, our master sculptor painstakingly creates each 3-dimentional sculpture from the original work in minute detail. A mold is then made into which the highest quality paraffin wax is poured. After cooling, the candle is hand-painted in several steps to create the illusion of carved stone. This gives each candle a unique look. When finished, you have more than just a candle, but a work of art! Our candles make the perfect decorative accent to any room in the home. A gift to celebrate any occasion. A piece of art to be enjoyed and cherished. MPS Candle Art Gifts has something for everyone. MPS

Many modern symbols used in advertising draw upon references to Greek Mythology. Did you know that, NIKE, in Greek mythology, was the goddess of victory? Nike fought with the god, Zeus, in her battle against the Titans, and in Greek art she is sometimes represented as winged and carrying a wreath or palm of victory. It is no wonder that the most successful tennis shoe company has chosen her as a symbol to represent its product. Logo Product Nike, Greek Goddess of Victory The Nike Shoe Company chooses to use the mythological reference to the goddess, Nike, to sell their tennis shoes. Because the goddess, Nike was victorious, the company is suggesting that people who buy their tennis shoes will fly faster on the track and court and will be winners too. Notice how their logo resembles the wing on the statue of Nike. Activity One Activity Two
