by Tamar M., Mariko N. and Yasuhiro O. Projects on Ancient Greece from Other Students The Trials of Hercules
Grade 7 Students, Eastchester Middle School
According to Greek mythology, Hercules was tormented and driven to madness by the goddess Hera. In a state of insanity, Hercules committed horrible crimes for which he later repented. The oracle of Delphi instructed Hercules that if he performed a series of tasks given him by his weak cousin Eurystheus, he would be forgiven fully. As shown in this illustrated narrative, he battled a nine-headed hydra while draped in a magical lionskin, gathered golden apples and journeyed to Haydes while performing the Twelve Labors Of Hercules. Here is a well illustrated and complete account of that story produced a group of middle school students. Description The source and nature of earliest speech and civilization are puzzles which have intrigued people for many centuries. This book surveys ancient Greek views on these questions. It discusses the harmonious language of the golden age, the means by which language was first invented, and some ancient 'linguists' described by Homer and Herodotus.

The Centre for Classics and Archaeology offers a full stream of study in the ancient languages Ancient Greek and Latin, see Latin . Proficiency in both of these languages at the earliest possible stage is highly recommended for those wishing to specialise in the study of the ancient Greco-Roman world. The ancient languages are thus a fundamental part of the major and the honours program in classics and in classical studies and archaeology, see Classical Studies and Archaeology . Both languages are available as streamed programs of study that can be commenced from first/second year. These can commence either at beginners level or the post-VCE stream. The centre also offers a Diploma in Arts (Ancient Languages), which runs concurrently with the arts degree see Diploma in Arts (Ancient Languages)

Department Information Head of Department Departmental Sections - Classics ... Contact Us GREEK LANGUAGE COURSES General Information Ancient Greek is possibly the single most important language in Western Civilization, as there is hardly a facet of Western Culture, either at present or in the past, that does not owe a sizeable debt to the language, literature and thought of the Ancient Greeks. No self-respecting Christian should be ignorant of the language of the language of the New Testament! No prior knowledge of Greek is assumed for Greek I, in which you start by learning the alphabet, and are trained so as to be able to read original Greek texts by September. In Greek II and III you improve your language skills and read a range of literary texts fundamental to Western cuture, including the great epics of Homer, the tragedies of Sophocles and Euripides, and the (often banned) comedies of Aristophanes. Add to these Herodotus, the father of lies or history (depending on your point of view), Thucydides and his clinical yet pathos-filled account of the war between Athens and Sparta, and Plato's search for what is true and good. Greek is a splendid complement to any course involving another language and literature (eg. English, French, Hebrew), and provides indispensable support to students intending to take Philosophy, (Ancient) History, or History of Art. Greek may also be studied at Honours, Masters or PhD level.
