62. Introduction To The Ancient Greek Language. January 2004.
Introduction to the ancient greek language. The new testament is written in Koine. ca. 400 AD, the ancient greek language is abandoned.
http://members.aol.com/OlivThill/Greek/greek0.htm
Introduction to the ancient Greek language
The Greeks were a people of sailors separated by the land and united by the sea.
  • ca. 6500 B.C., the first inhabitants of Greece starts cultivating land. ca. 2000 B.C., an Indo-European people invads Greece.
They borrow a few words from the original inhabitants, like the words for the sea and for the olive tree.
The earliest Greek texts that have survived are written with a script called Linear B (the Minoan civilization of Crete used a similar syllabary which we now call Linear A). ca. 1100 B.C., end of the Mycenaean civilization. Linear B is not used anymore.
The Phoenicians devise the Hebrew alphabet. ca. 800 B.C., Hesiod writes his works, probably using the Greek alphabet, which is derived from the alphabet of the Phoenicians. ca. 750 B.C., first written version of the poems, the Iliad and Odyssey , that Homer composed about 100 years earlier. The 4 main dialects of the Greek language are: Arcado-Cyprian, Eolian, Ionic-Attic, and Doric. Between ca. 600 B.C. and ca. 400 B.C., Athens is a prominent city and the Attic dialect is spread to other parts of Greece. ca. 300 B.C., the Greek worldits main city is now Alexandriaspeaks a common language derived from the Attic, called the Koine. The new testament is written in Koine.

ANCIENT GREEK WITH THRASYMACHUS
INTRODUCTION
To the wise man, nothing is foreign.
Students of Ancient Greek approach this discipline for a variety of reasons. They appreciate the beauty, clarity, and concise nature of the language, or they are fascinated with the culture which has had such an impact upon our own and to which we have exceptional access through its abundant linguistic and archaeological record. In order to have a better understanding of this culture and its literature, they need to read and comprehend its texts, not merely translate them word for word. To this end classicists, archaeologists, philosophers, historians, theologians, and anyone with an avid interest in the Graeco-Roman world will want to develop the tools for approaching a Greek text, whether it is an Homeric epic, a tragedy of Euripides, a philosophical treatise of Plato, a history by Thucydides, or an inscription on a monument or painted vase. Traditional textbooks for learning Ancient Greek often focus on the acquisition of grammar and syntax largely out of context, often with complicated explanations. More recently, the varied linguistic preparation of students and changing pedagogy have led to the development of reading and even oral methods. In these times, it can no longer be assumed that college bound students will have a thorough background in formal English grammar and Latin or that they will know the Homeric and Vergilian epics in translation. With the explosion of computer technology and information retrieval we no longer learn primarily by rote memorization, lecture, and book reading. Our current situation warrants a re-evaluation of teaching goals and methods.

    Greek Language and Script
Q: Why are there two blocks of Greek characters in the Unicode Standard? A: The layout of the Greek script in the Unicode Standard is an artifact of the history of Unicode and of ISO/IEC 10646. The Unicode Standard started out with just the Greek block (U+0370..U+03FF), with Greek characters laid out in compatibility with the modern Greek monotonic standard, ISO/IEC 8859-7, and with additions for some Coptic, ancient Greek, and Greek symbol letters. When the Unicode Standard had the repertoire from drafts of ISO/IEC 10646 merged in, as part of the standards compromise which resulted in the synchronization of the Unicode Standard and 10646, the Unicode Standard acquired another collection of pre-composed Greek characters which were intended for polytonic Greek usage. Those had to be placed somewhere, and a "compatibility" block was created at U+1F00..U+1FFF to accommodate them.

Ancient Greek Language, History and Culture based on the work of Herodotus
HERODOTUS is an educational software addressed to Greek junior high school pupils, for teaching Ancient Greek Language, History and Culture based on a selected number of extracts from the work of the historian Herodotus.
One of the most innovative aspects of the software is the 'window' to Herodotus' world, which offers the users the chance to find material from antiquity (e.g. description of ancient technology, videos from archeological sites and exhibits in Museums) related to the text under consideration. They can also have access to modern works of art and literature from both Greece and the rest of Europe, which provide evidence of the impact of the Greek historian in modern European civilisation.
The software of HERODOTUS can be used both for self-teaching as well as for guided teaching in junior high school. HERODOTUS is an advanced technological product designed and implemented by ILSP in collaboration with the Department of Classical Philology of the University of Thessaloniki, Ellinogermaniki Agogi and Papassotiriou S.A. It was partially based upon previous work produced within the framework of the program SEIRINES. Price: 9.900 GRD

Its purpose, beyond the fulfillment of our final project requirement, is to bring together quality online sources of information on Ancient Greek civilization for the ultimate purpose of heightened awareness and increasingly efficient learning about this fascinating empire. The emphasis is on quality web sites and attractions rather than quantity. It would be foolish for me to try to index every resource on the internet, therefore in addition to showcasing the best websites that I have come across, I have also included links to other internet indexes on these same topics for the purpose of further exploration (see the table of contents).

    Language Profile
Like Latin, Sanskrit, and Gothic, Ancient Greek is one of the oldest representatives of the Indo-European family of languages, and knowledge of it is indispensable for the work of historical and comparative linguists. Unlike Latin, however, which was the dialect of a single region, Ancient Greek comprised a far-flung group of related dialects that covered an area extending from mainland Greece over the Aegean islands and down the eastern seaboard of Ionia (modern Turkey). In early times, each region produced its own distinctive literature: the Iliad and Odyssey of Homer originated in Ionia, the lyric poetry of Sappho was penned on the Aegean island of Lesbos, and Athens was home to a host of great writers including Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, Plato, Thucydides, and Demosthenes; a desire for unmediated experience of this brilliant body of literature continues to be the primary motive for the study of Ancient Greek. With the conquests of Alexander the Great (died 323 B.C.), Greek came to be spoken throughout the whole of the eastern Mediterranean world. The —or "common"—dialect of Greek that emerged over this wide area also spread through the Western Roman Empire when Greek was adopted by the Romans as a language of learning and culture. As the
