Although the origins of Greek Tragedy and Comedy are obscure and controversial, our ancient sources allow us to construct a rough chronology of some of the steps in their development. Some of the names and events on the timeline are linked to passages in the next section on the Origins of Greek Drama which provide additional context. (Works in bold are on the Hum 110 syllabus) 7th Century BC c. 625 Arion at Corinth produces named dithyrambic choruses.
6th Century BC Cleisthenes , tyrant of Sicyon, transfers "tragic choruses" to Dionysus 540-527 Pisistratus, tyrant of Athens, founds the festival of the Greater Dionysia

    Introduction
Studying the long-lasting history of a particular people, could be helpful for understanding the functions of historical procedures in general. The greeks are one of the few study-cases of unbroken consciousness through the ages. But what is greekness after all? I would describe it as the co-existance of three typically greek elements: to question everything - to adhere to nothing - to create something. Some of the three, are shared by many people regardless of nationality. But most mediterranean inhabitants tend to develop all three characteristics through the ages. Probably it has to do with the climate's and place's diverseness: it is harsh enough to toughen, but not too harsh to crush you. It is mild enough to invite hopefull experimenting, but not too mild to loosen your alertness. So, please, let me share with you the fascinating story of how a small people tried, inquired, excelled, sometimes failed and finally survived through times.

THE INFLUENCE OF THE ANCIENT GREEK WORDS ON THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE DRAMA-THEATER BY DR. JOHN KALARAS
**NEW** (This writing is published to demonstrate that one can write a sophisticated article by using exclusively words of Greek origin) T he genesis of classical drama was not symptomatic. Aneuphoria of charismatic and talented protagonists showed fantastic scenes of historic episodes. The prologue, the theme and the epilogue, comprised the trilogy of drama while synthesis, analysis and synopsis characterized the phraseology of the text. The syntax and phraseology used by scholars, academicians and philosophers in their rhetoric, had many grammatical idioms and idiosyncrasies. T he protagonists periodically used pseudonyms. Anonymity was a syndrome that characterized the theatrical atmosphere.
The panoramic fantasy, the mystique, the melody, the aesthetics, the use of the cosmetic epithets are characteristics of drama.
Eventhrough the theaters were physically gigantic, there was noneed for microphones because the architecture and the acoustics would echo isometrically and crystal - clear. Many epistomologists of physics, aerodynamics, acoustics, electronics, electromagnetics can not analyze - explain the ideal and isometric acoustics of Hellenic theaters even today. T here were many categories of drama: classical drama, melodrama, satiric, epic, comedy, etc. The syndrome of xenophobia or dyslexia was overcome by the pathos of the actors who practiced methodically and emphatically. Acrobatics were also euphoric. There was a plethora of anecdotal themes, with which the acrobats would electrify the ecstatic audience with scenes from mythical and historical episodes.

It is not a small thing for the Modern Greek poet to use the same words Sappho and Archilochus used for the sky, the sea, the sun, the wind. Indeed, it is very important. In our daily communication we use the roots that can be traced back there: in the Ancient Greek language. II. Dear friends, it has been granted to me to write in a language that is spoken only by a few million people. But a language spoken without interruption, with very few differences, throughout more than two thousand five hundred years. This apparently surprising spatial-temporal distance is found in the cultural dimensions of my country. Its spatial area is one of the smallest; but its temporal extension is infinite.

A History of the Greek Language: From the Beginnings to Late Antiquity
Six years in the making, the effort bears the editorial leadership of Anastasios Foivos Christidis , Director of the Department of Linguistics of the Centre for the Greek Language , and tackles the question of the Greek language from its very beginnings to late antiquity (around 7th century AD) following its journey via its historical, cultural and social interaction. By the end of 2004 scholars and academics worldwide will finally be able to read the History in English bearing, moreover, the esteemed stamp of the Cambridge University Press . The translation is funded by the culture ministry http://www.culture.gr and executed by the Centre for the Greek Language. The organisation (which promotes the language within Greece and throughout the Diaspora by publishing educational material and supporting teachers of the language worldwide) oversaw the original publication.

The Greek Language Ôhe origin, evolution, influences and current form of the Greek Language.
    Briefly Speaking
The Greek language is of Indo-European origin and is spoken and written primarily in Greece and Cyprus. Its history is long and rich and spans a period of 34 centuries from the 14th century BC to date (longer than any other language of Indo-European descent). Through this long period of time, the Greek language evolves in four distinct forms/phases:
    • Ancient Greek (14th - 4th century BC). The original form of language is Mycenaean Greek (14th - 12th century BC), characterized by the use of syllabic script called Linear B . Following the Mycenean Greek, the prominent Greek language form becomes Archaic (Classical) Greek (8th - 4th century BC). A prominent feature of this form is its adoption of the alphabet, and the introduction of new letters and vowels.

    • The break in the evolution of language from the 12th to the 8th century coincides with the destruction of the Mycenean civilization by the Dorian invasions and for nearly 4 centuries very little linguistic progress was recorded.
    • Hellenistic Greek (4th century BC - 4th century AD). Also known as

In antiquity there were a number of dialects of the Greek language, the most important of which were Aeolic, Arcadian, Attic, Cyprian, Doric, and Ionic. Ancient Greek was prevalent in the Balkan peninsula, the Greek islands, W Asia Minor, S Italy, and Sicily. Because of the political and cultural importance of Athens in the classical period of Greek history, the Athenian dialect, Attic, became dominant. From Attic there developed an idiom called the koin E , which means "common" or "common to all the people" and which became a standard form of Ancient Greek. After Alexander the Great the koin E developed into an international language that remained current in the central and E Mediterranean regions and in parts of Asia Minor and Africa for many centuries. Most of the New Testament was written in the koin

Thus, long marks and the like are not indicated, and so cited forms should be used with caution. Language Name: Ancient Greek, Classical Greek, Greek (without reference to time period, the ancient form of the language is usually taken as the unmarked value, and within Ancient Greek, the Attic dialect (see below on Dialects ) is the usual point of reference); autonym: hellenike (actually an adjective derived from Hellen , the word for a 'Greek' in general (as opposed to a member of one of the Greek dialect groups; as an adjective, it is modifying an understood noun 'language'). Location: Family: Ancient Greek is generally taken to be the only representative (though note the existence of different dialects) of the Greek or Hellenic branch of Indo-European. There is some dispute as to whether Ancient Macedonian (the native language of Philip and Alexander), if it has any special affinity to Greek at all, is a dialect within Greek (see below) or a sibling language to all of the known Ancient Greek dialects. If the latter view is correct, then Macedonian and Greek would be the two subbranches of a group within Indo-European which could more properly be called Hellenic.
