Greek Boys Clothes: Regions
Figure 1. This 1929 portrait was taken of a family on Crete. Click on the image for more information about the family. Greece is a small country, but there traditionally have been meant destinctive regional differences. Some important regions are northern Greece, the Aegean Islands, and Crete. These differencs today are most apparent in folk costumes. HBC is not sure of just how clothing styles varied in different regions. We do know that as in other countruies, traditional fashions generally tended to persist in the rural areas and small villages. After World War II these differences began to decline. Today with television and modern media, there are few differences, except in folk costumes among clothing styles in different regions.
Asia Minor
Anatolia or modern Turkey is often referred to as Asia Minor by the Greeks. It is one of the most contested areas in human history. TIt has been at times controlled and influences by the Greeks. The Greek seage of Troy occurred at the dawn of recorded history. The Persians threatened Greece when they conquered Asian Minor. Alexander later Helenized the region after defeating the Persians. The Ottomans completed the conquest of Asian Minor when Constaninople fell in 1452, but large numbers of Greeks continued to live in Asia Minor, especially in coastal areas until the 1920s. A war between Greece and Turkey following World War I resulted in a Greek defeat. Much of the Greek population left with the retreating Greek Army or in the repressions and forced resettlerments conducted by the Turks after the war.

A good book for the tourist hitting the checkmarks...

I was sent this book before setting off for Greece (where I spent 3 weeks in Athens and the Peloponnese). I read through it, and it did give me a fairly good understanding of what it was going to be like when I got there. Fortunately, I was not solely dependent on the book for seeing interesting things, as I had several friends to travel with (2 of whom were Greek). One of the interesting things that I noticed about Greece (being such an ancient country) was that there are various ruins around much of the country, and quite a few in Athens. Many of the locals don't know what specific ruins are, especially when you get far afield from their hometowns. From that perspective, this book does provide a good source of information on what many of the ruins actually are/were. Also, it has a really good section on how to get around the various sections in Athens, and what items of interest are in each area. I would take note of things that you especially want to see, because you will find that there are statues, objects, ruins and artifacts all over the place, and unless you have some idea of what you are interested in, you can spend days just walking around looking at various objects of very little interest or importance. As with any foreign country or culture (or even other cities in your own country) you will never get to the really good hole in the wall restaurants and see some of the cooler sites (such as exclusive nightclubs on the coast in Athens) without the help and guidance of a local companion, so don't think for a moment that this book is a replacement for someone who REALLY knows what they are doing.

Regions
The southernmost geographic section of mainland Greece. Originally it was an island, but intense geological upheavals in the region united and separated it from the mainland twice. Later, a new retreat by the sea formed the Isthmus of Corinth . This land bridge was cut in the late 19th century to make the Corinth canal, making the Peloponnese an island yet again. The Peloponnese (Peloponisos) is a rugged land and in its interior is highlands. The climate is purely Mediterranean along the coasts, unlike the centre, which has a relatively continental climate.
A mythical land whose every corner brings to mind some Greek myth, the Peloponnese is composed of images and music, the scents. of the sea, of the mountains, of grapes, olives, and citrus. The cities, towns, and spas of the region were important centres in antiquity, and remain so today. Villages seem to grow out of the grey rock, the wild stones next to the hostile furze. Other villages lie by the vast open sea, but everywhere the people are vital, hospitable, haughty, and proud. Korinthia Three main road networks lead to places with abundant physical beauty, important archaeological sites, land and stones testifying of other eras. Just before we arrive at the

ASIA MINOR: PONTOS The Pontian dress was an urban costume, in accordance with the eastern models which began life in the center of Hellenism at that time, Constantinople. This phenomenon was to be observed in most urban centers of the Ottoman Empire. Underneath the ladies wore a fine silk chemise, the bodice and sleeves of which were trimmed with crocheted lace, and then a pair of silk or satin breeches. Next came the well-known urban style kavadi , open at the front and with two side openings down to the hips. This garment was always lined and decorated round the hem with silk ribbon and delicate embroidery. Round the hips was wound a large silk scarf, trimmed with fringe of silk thread, folded into a triangle. With the birth of the first child, this scarf was replaced by one made of fine striped taffeta which was tied at the back, hanging down like an apron on the front. It was carefully ironed into ten-centimeter-wide horizontal creases. Silk jabots were positioned on the bodice, trimmed with white silk embroidery and crocheted lace or gold stitching. On top of this went a sleeved waistcoat, originally of black felt and later of dark-colored velvet decorated with silver stitches. From the wedding day onwards the bride wore a silk- covered disc decorated with a row of little coins that hung across the forehead. Dora Stratou Theater OLD ATHENS: THE BRIDAL COSTUME The girl's costume, particularly her festival one, is composed of pieces with a very old formal tradition. The matchmaking process began when the children were still very young. Care was taken to ensure that both children were in the same social class. During the engagement and right up to the wedding the young people never met; they did, however, exchange gifts. What the girl's dowry contained depended on her social class and wealth. When the time came, the bridal outfit was prepared. The bride's hair was washed with henna, then it was braided into small plaits (about 40). Gold and silk thread the color of the bride's hair was woven into it. Her female relatives helped the bride put on her very expensive bridal outfit. They put on the
