Later in his life, Theseus lost his throne to Menestheus, because of his absence, when he was imprisoned in the Underworld and the Dioscuri and Spartan army invaded Attica. GREECE (Regions)
I n Greece the marked variety of the terrain above water continues under the surface, along a seabed which, millions of years ago, was dry land. Close to Cape Tainaron (Tenaro) off the south tip of the Peloponnese, the so-called Oinoussai (Inousses) Pit is 4,850 metres deep which is the deepest point in the Mediterranean. T he Greek peninsula, Europe's southeastern tip, has an area of 131,944 square kilometres, and consists of mainland Greece (Attica, the Peloponnese, Sterea Ellada, Thessaly, Epirus, Macedonia, Thrace) and the islands of the Aegean and lonian seas. Geographically it belongs to Europe since it forms the most southerly extremity of the Balkan peninsula but it also has a special link with Europe through the small entity of the lonian Islands which form a chain off Greece's western shores in the lonian sea. I n contrast, there are the numerous islands of the Aegean sea, some isolated like Crete in the south, and some in groups like the islands of the Northeast Aegean, the Sporades, the Cyclades, and the Dodecanese. T he Cyclades consist of 39 islands of which only 24 are inhabited.

The regional divisions employed in this section more or less follow the political map of modern Greece. The Aegean islands and Crete are treated as a single region, which politically they are not, simply because their normal divisions are less germane to wine than to politics or, say, tourism.
This section, like so many others on this site, is a work in progress likely to be rewritten and updated as the mood or need strikes. There are producers, islands and sub-regions not yet present that will appear soon on these pages. Links to producers, appellations and varieties will be added gradually as these sections are completed. Mailing list subscribers will receive notification when these additions are made.
Neophytes may find the interactive map helpful in learning the actual locations of regions within Greece. Others may prefer the menu to the right.

The Regions in Brief Athens Central Greece Crete The Cyclades ... Western Greece Greece is a land of sea and mountains. Over a fifth of the Greek land mass is comprised of islands, numbering several thousand if you count every floating crag and nowhere in Greece will you find yourself more than 96km (60 miles) from the sea. It should come as no surprise that the sea molds the Greek imagination, as well as its history. Mainland Greece, meanwhile, is a great vertebrate, with the Pindos range reaching from north to south, and continuing, like a tail, through the Peloponnese. The highest of its peaks is Mount Olympus, the seat of the gods, nearly 3,000m (10,000 ft.) above sea level. Eighty percent of the Greek mainland is mountainous, which you will rapidly discover whether you make your way on foot or on wheels. Source: Frommer's Greece, 4th Edition

Greece Geography, Climate, and Weather
Geography Greece is situated in southeast Europe on the Mediterranean. The mainland consists of the following regions: Central Greece, Peloponnese, Thessaly (east/central), Epirus (west), Macedonia (north/northwest) and Thrace (northwest). Euboea, the second largest of the Greek islands, lying to the east of the central region, is also considered to be part of the mainland region. The Peloponnese peninsula is separated from the northern mainland by the Isthmus of Corinth. The northern mainland is dissected by high mountains (such as the Pindus) that extend southwards towards a landscape of fertile plains, pine-forested uplands and craggy, scrub-covered foothills. The islands account for one-fifth of the land area of the country.

The Peleponnese is the heart and soul of Greece
When most people think of holidays in Greece they think of the Greek islands
The idea of all these islands, each different from the next, the whitewashed houses and beautiful beaches is an enticement to anyone. But lost in the commotion over Mykonos Santorini Rhodes and Corfu is the fact that some of the most beautiful and interesting places in Greece are not on the islands, but on the mainland in places like the Peloponnese
The Peloponnese , or Peleponisos , or Peloponessos or however you want to spell it, is what many people think of as the real Greece. Beautiful beaches, majestic mountains, unparalleled natural beauty and a history as long as civilization. Name the first Capital of modern Greece. Give up? It wasn't Athens or Thessaloniki . It was Nafplio
At the time, the Peloponnesse was all there was of Greece, after it was liberated from the Turks in 1821. It nearly went back to the Turks when the heroes of the revolution began fighting amongst themselves. But such is life in Greece. For many, the Peloponessos is the true Greece - and to them the narrow isthmus of Corinth is all that separates them from a world of Albanians, Vlachs, Bulgarians and Macedonians, who are all Greeks to us.
But the Peloponnese can be said to be the heart and soul of Greece, and though it has been left off the tourist map that was especially painted for North Americans, it is as good a place to visit as any ten islands combined.

11th Brittanica: History of Ancient Greece
Ancient Greece to 146 B.C. I. Introductory.- It is necessary to indicate at the outset the scope and object of the present article. The reader must not expect to find in it a compendious summary of the chief events in the history of ancient Greece. It is not intended to supply an "Outlines of Greek History." It may be questioned whether such a sketch of the history, within the limits of space which are necessarily imposed in a work of reference, would be of utility to any class of readers. At any rate, the plan of the present work, in which the subject of Greek history is treated of in a large number of separate articles, allows of the narrative of events being given in a more satisfactory form under the more general of the headings ( e.g. i.e. of the Greek peninsula. For the identification of Greect with Greece proper there may be some degree of excuse when w~ come to the sth and 4th centuries. In the period that lies behinc the year 500 B.C. Greece proper forms but a small part of the Greek world. In the 7th and 6th centuries it is outside Greece itself that we must look for the most active life of the Greel people and the most brilliant manifestations of the Greek spirit The present article, therefore, will be concerned with the cause and conditions of events, rather than with the events themselves it will attempt analysis rather than narrative. Its object wil be to indicate problems and to criticize views; to sugges lessons and parallels, and to estimate the importance of the Hellenic factor in the development of civilization.

This site is devoted to informing wine lovers, the wine trade and the wine media about the current revolution in the Greek wine industry (as well as the preservation of unique traditions that have evolved over thousands of years of continuous winemaking).
Sadly, during the 1960s, retsina came to dominate all associations with Greek wine. But retsina was only part of the story.
In ancient times, Greece played a crucial role in the development of the wine culture of Europe. Nearly two thousand years of foreign occupation took a toll on her fortunes, yet many of Greece's rich viticultural resources remain intact. During the last forty years the Greek wine industry has struggled to regain its name. Now, armed with an ocean of indigenous cultivars, a superior climate for grape growing, and an abundance of brainpower and technological resources, Greek wine now presents exciting newand ancientpossibilities for wine lovers around the world.
In the past two decades, Greece has undergone a revolution in which quality, individuality and history are the hallmarks of a new generation of Greek wine producers determined to make their mark abroad.

Western Greece Whether by air, ferry, or hydrofoil, the Sporades, strewn north and east of the island of Evvia (Euboea), are readily accessible from the mainland and offer verdant forest landscapes, golden-sand beaches, and crystalline waters. That's the good news. The bad news is that they are no secret. Skiathos is the most in demand with all that that implies. Skopelos, whose lovely port is one of the most striking in Greece, is more rugged and remote than Skiathos, with more trails and fewer nightclubs. Relatively far-off Skyros is well worth a visit, offering underwater fishing and diving, sandy beaches, and luminously clear waters.
