The Book of the Ancient Greeks, Chapter XIV: The Greek Theatre
Selections from: Mills, Dorothy. The Book of the Ancient Greeks: An Introduction to the History and Civilization of Greece from the Coming of the Greeks to the Conquest of Corinth by Rome in 146 B.C
The Greek drama began as a religious observance in honour of Dionysus. To the Greeks this god personified both spring and the vintage, the latter a very important time of year in a vine-growing country, and he was a symbol to them of that power there is in man of rising out of himself, of being impelled onwards by a joy within him that he cannot explain, but which makes him go forward, walking, as it were, on the wings of the wind, of the spirit that fills him with a deep sense of worship. We call this power enthusiasm , a Greek word which simply means

History and Culture of Lesvos (Lesbos) island, Greece:
T he Eastern Mediterranean was one of the first cradles of mankind. Not only modern man (Homo sapiens sapiens) but his predecessors Neanderthal man (Homo sapiens neanderthalenis) and Homo erectus settled early on the coasts, islands and inland regions of this area of the globe, so favored by nature.
By the last phase of the Neolithic era (up to about 2000 BC), the Eastern Mediterranean area was densely populated, in comparison to general population levels at that time, by peoples racially akin to each other; they could be described in a word as "Mediterraneans" and should be considered the truly indigenous population of the area.
T owns, large and small, have been discovered to date in Lesbos. The oldest ruins date back to 3200-3100 BC. In Thermi, which has been systematically excavated by W. Lamb, five towns were unearthed, one on top of the other. They represent the time period from 3200 to 2400 BC. The first three correspond to Troy I and the other two to Troy II. Only in the most recent level have traces of fortifications been found. They were perhaps build out of the people of Central Asia, who had begun to constitute a threat as they approached the coasts and nearby islands.

The history of Hellas starts somewhere in the prehistory, but the Glory of Greece starts with the Mycenaean civilisation which was influenced by a "forgotten" civilisation: the Minoic kingdom. Dark ages follow this golden era, but the pattern for the future is set with the invasion of the Dorians and the rise of the Polis. Several conflicts with the immense Persian empire show the power of city-states. However, internal conflicts for hegemony push Hellas into the hands of Macedon who ends the indepency of Hellas by conquering it. Greek culture is spread out over Asia Minor with Macedonian conquests, but eventually it is Rome who becomes the new worldpower.
Prehistory and Earliest history (till 800BC) The Minoic civilisation flourished during this period and was the cause for the birth of the Mycenaean civilisation on the mainland of Hellas. It was the time of the palace cultures: enormous strongholds on hills. A coalition of these cities formed an expedition and destroyed Troy. Everybody has heard of this as Homer wrote one of the most succesfull books in history about it: the Illiad.

Delphi was inhabited since Mycenaean times (14th - 11th c. B.C.) by small settlements who were dedicated to the Mother Earth deity. The worship of Apollo as the god of light, harmony, and order was established between the 11th and 9th centuries. Slowly over the next five centuries the sanctuary grew in size and importance. During the 8th c. B.C. Delphi became internationally known for the Oracular powers of Pythia.

    The Colossus of Rhodes
Colossus, one of the seven wonders of the world, was built around 304 BC by Chares the Lindios (from Lindos ), in honor of Apollo the god of the sun (Helios in Greek) and patron god of Rhodes. It stood one hundred feet tall and it was located at the entrance of Mandraki harbor. Made entirely of bronze, it was then used as a lighthouse. It symbolized the strength and wealth of the Rhodian people.
It is believed to have been destroyed in 226 BC by a powerful earthquake. Later the pieces, it is believed, to have been taken by the Egyptians.
