History of Ancient Greece
One of the great paradoxes of history is that the next hesitant advance of European civilization - the development of the first city-states - took place not on the fertile open central European plains, but in a remote island to the south of the Aegean Sea which was completely lacking in metal resources. While the glittering mounted warrior-princes of central Europe dissipated their creative energy in warfare, a highly cultured yet peaceful society, built on trade and an agricultural surplus, emerged on Crete. The history of Greece can be traced back to Stone Age hunters. Later came early farmers and the civilizations of the Minoan and Mycenaean kings. This was followed by a period of wars and invasions, known as the Dark Ages. In about 1100 BC, a people called the Dorians invaded from the north and spread down the west coast. In the period from 500-336 BC Greece was divided into small city states, each of which consisted of a city and its surrounding countryside.

    Greece History and Culture
History Greece was the birthplace of European civilization. The period from 700BC saw the rise of the great city states of Athens, Corinth and Sparta, frequently engaged in long struggles for supremacy, and uniting only when faced with the common threat of invasion by the Persian Empire. The zenith was reached in the 5th century BC when Athens became the cultural and artistic centre of the Mediterranean, producing magnificent works of architecture, sculpture, drama and literature. Athens lost her empire through a mutually suicidal struggle with her arch rival Sparta.

Introduction [Top of Page] Background: Greece achieved its independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1829. During the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, it gradually added neighboring islands and territories with Greek-speaking populations. Following the defeat of communist rebels in 1949, Greece joined NATO in 1952. A military dictatorship, which in 1967 had suspended many political liberties and forced the king to flee the country, was itself overthrown seven years later. Democratic elections in 1974 abolished the monarchy and created a parliamentary republic; Greece joined the EU in 1981. Its ancient name was Peparethos and is mentioned by the pre-Hellenic people of Asia Minor who settled in the Aegean region in the period 2800 - 2000 BC. This name is mentioned likewise by Thoukydides. Around 1600 BC Cretans whose leader was the mythical king Staphylos, son of Theseus and Ariadne, settled the island. As tradition reminds us, Theseus, son of Aegeas king of Athens, was sent with 7 young boys and 7 young girls to the Cretan king Minos, as a duty demanded by Athens, intended to be offered as sacrifice to the Minotaur (a strange creation of mythology, half man, half bull) who lived in the labyrinth underneath the palace of Knosos in Crete. There, Theseus became acquainted with Ariadne, Minos' daughter. Ariadne fell in love with him and helped him, giving him a ball of wool, to escape from the labyrinth and to survive. Theseus found the exit, kidnapped Ariadne and left Crete. . But on the island of Naxos he abandoned Ariadne who in her loneliness discovered the God Dionisos who in his turn fell in love with the girl and took her to Lemnos. In Lemnos Ariadne and Dionisos had four sons, Thoantas, Oinopionas, Staphylos and Peparithos. Peparithos was the first to settle on the island of Skopelos. Until today his name survives in this place full of olive trees and pine forests.

Location Greece is a northwest suburb of Rochester in New York. It is bounded on the north by Lake Ontario History The town of Greece was established by the New York State Legislature on March 22, 1822. Between 1822 and World War I, Greece evolved into an agricultural community as the wilderness gave way to farms rooted in glacial rich soil. With access to Lake Ontario, the Genesee River, Erie Canal and Ridge Road, the Town became a transportation hub and a major supplier of farm produce. After World War I, Greece began to shed its rural agricultural character. Continuing gradual expansion of Kodak Park brought about related residential growth. Annexations by the City of Rochester between 1916 and 1919 cut the Town's population in half but steady growth more than offset the loss. The Town experienced explosive growth following World War II. Major additions were made to Kodak Park and the farms and orchards gave way to homes.

Greece has a history stretching back more than 4.000 years. The people of the mainland, called Hellenes, organized great naval and military expeditions, and explored the Mediterranean and the Black Sea, going as far as the Atlantic Ocean and the Caucasus Mountains. One of those expeditions, the siege of Troy, is narrated in the first great European literary work, Homer's Iliad. Numerous Greek settlements were founded throughout the Mediterranean, Asia Minor and the coast of North Africa as a result of travels in search of new markets.
During the Classical period (5th century BC), Greece was composed of city-states, the largest being Athens, followed by Sparta and Thebes. A fierce spirit of independence and love of freedom enabled the Greeks to defeat the Persians in famous battles - Marathon, Thermopylae Salamis and Plataea.

Basic Facts Bronze Age. During the Bronze Age (3000-1200 BC) the powerful Cycladic, Minoan and Mycenaean maritime civilisations flourished. According to Homer, this was a time of violence and wars based on trade rivalries, although it is thought that Minoan culture was generally peaceful and harmonious. By the 11th century BC the Minoan and Mycenaean cultures had collapsed, due to changing patterns of trade and a Dorian invasion from the north, and a 'dark age' ensued. Golden Age. By 800 BC Greece was undergoing a cultural and military revival, with the evolution of city-states, the most powerful of which were Athens and Sparta. Greater Greece was created, with southern Italy as an important component. This period was followed by an era of great prosperity known as the classical (or golden) age. During this time, Pericles commissioned the Parthenon Sophocles wrote Oedipus the King Socrates taught young Athenians the rigours of logic, and a tradition of democracy (literally, 'control by the people') was ushered in. The classical age came to an end with the

table of contents main narrative chronology historiography ... search Turkey and Greece: A History of Colliding The conflict in Cyprus did not rise from a vacuum. Greece and Turkey have been at odds for hundreds of years despite many commonalities. While the notion of A ancient hatred is a convenient myth, there is nonetheless a history of occasional conflict that stretches back to the entry of Turkish nomads into the Byzantine empire in the 11 th century, the gradual collapse of the Byzantine empire, the fall of Constantinople in 1453, and the long dominance of the dynasty of Osman, or Ottomans, over Greece and the islands of the Eastern Mediterranean. Understanding the Cyprus problem today requires knowledge of the longstanding disputes in the Greek-Turkish relationship. In this excerpt, A Ottoman Imperialism and Hellenism: Death Throes and Disaster, British journalist and historian Robert Stephens describes the modern period of this confrontation. THE YOUNG TURK revolution began the destruction of the old Ottoman political order, but it was only one, albeit important, stage in the long effort of the Turks to come to terms with Western culture and power: an effort which began two centuries ago and on which, psycho- logically at least, the Cyprus dispute still has some effect today. One of the tragedies of this Turkish struggle to adapt and reform is that, as has occurred in other countries, the advent of the reformers often coincided with dangerous pressures from precisely those quarters at home and abroad to which the reformers looked for cooperation and help. The results generally either discredited the reformers at home or provoked them to bitterness and disillusion. For example, the revolt of the Balkan Slavs and Turkey's disastrous defeat by Russia in 1876-78 helped to wreck the first Ottoman constitutional experiment.

[Upload image] The Greek War of Independence from the Ottoman Empire began in 1821 and concluded with the winning of independence in 1830. With the support of England France and Russia a monarchy was established. A Bavarian prince Otto was named king in 1833. He was deposed 30 years later and the Great Powers chose a prince of the Danish House of Glucksberg as his successor. He became George I King of the Hellenes. The Megali Idea (Great Idea) a vision of uniting all Greeks of the declining Ottoman Empire within the newly independent Greek State exerted strong influence on the early Greek state. At independence Greece had an area of 47 515 square kilometers (18 346 square mi.) and its northern boundary extended from the Gulf of Volos to the Gulf of Arta. The Ionian Islands were added in 1864; Thessaly and part of Epirus in 1881; Macedonia Crete Epirus and the Aegean Islands in 1913; Western Thrace in 1918; and the Dodecanese Islands in 1947. Greece entered World War I in 1917 on the side of the Allies. After the war Greece took part in the Allied occupation of Turkey where many Greeks still lived. In 1921 the Greek army attacked from its base in Smyrna (now Izmir) and marched toward Ankara. The Greeks were defeated by Turkish forces led by Mustafa Kemal (later Ataturk) and were forced to withdraw in the summer of 1922. Smyrna was sacked by the Turks and more than 1.3 million Greek refugees from Turkey poured into Greece creating enormous challenges for the Greek economy and society and effectively ending the Megali Idea.

Archaeological remains show that Greece had a long prehistory, dating from the Neolithic Age (c.4000 B.C. ). By the Bronze Age (c.2800 B.C. ) important cultures had developed. The Aegean civilization had several phases, two of the most important being the Minoan civilization and the Mycenaean civilization . These cultures had disappeared by 1100 B.C. The Greek-speaking Achaeans migrated into the Peloponnesus during the 14th and 13th cent. B.C. The Aeolians and the Ionians apparently preceded the Dorians, who migrated into Greece before 1000 B.C. The Ionians, moving forth, possibly as refugees, possibly as conquerors, settled in the Ionian Islands and on the shores of Asia Minor, which became a part of the Greek world. After the Dorian invasion, the peoples of Greece, under the influence of the divisive geography and the great variety of tribes, developed the

Leimonos Monastery , (pictured on left) built in 1523 is a large cluster of buildings between Kaloni and Filia. It is an important spiritual center on the island with a museum, a library and social services. Overnight stays are possible. They have a festival here celebrating Ag. A modern day phenomenon is the developing Monastery of Agiou Raphael in Thermi. People come from all over Greece to the shrine of the Newly Sanctified Martyrs of Raphael, the Father Superior of the destroyed monastery, of Nikolas, the deacon, and the young Irene, all three of whom died as martyrs at the hands of the Turks in 1463. A miracle was responsible for the discovery of the bodies of the saints, by Angelos Rallis, who donated the land for the monastery. This monastery is constantly visited year-round by pilgrims searching for a miracle. The complex has rooms for overnight stays. There is a celebration here on the Tuesday after Easter.
