General area information. Photos. (Varasova, greece)

Varasova, climbing in Greece
an extremely important rock climbing area

Not far away from the estuary of river Evinos, the dominating Varasova rocks emerge right where the peaceful valley of Etoliko meets the sea. Plain beauty of the scenery, exceptional solidity of the rock, easy access and sea joys were the obvious advantages which have established Varasova, as one of the most important climbing areas in Greece.
Varasova is a limestone massif near the sea, just opposite of Patra and has a height of 917 m. There are three summits of almost the same altitude. Varasova flanks, drop abruptly into the sea on the south and Southwest and this is the location of the most important walls, just between Vasiliki and Galatas villages.
The limestone rocks of Varasova have earned a good reputation due to their Spupolitidy. "Hidden" holds and secure nut placements, make climbing in Varasova particularly enjoyable.

W hat does Greece mean ? M any scientists believe that the name HELLAS
derived from “ sol ” which means “ light
Derivative words are “ selini sellas
So from the word Sellas came the word Ellinas and
Ellas. In antiquity all the people who spoke
the same language, believed in the twelve gods
and had the same customs , could be called Ellinas
A ristotle the philosopher stated that in Epirus the inhabitants,
the Selloi, then named Grekoi and now Greeks. The name Grekoi according to Aristotle was older than the word Ellinas. T his word predominated throughout the world especially during the Byzantine period. The Byzantine (then dedicated Christians) avoided using the word Ellinas because they identified it with worship ( idolatry ) and they called them Graikoi (GREEKS). So from the Byzantine this term was established.

An independent bicycle tour around the Peloponnese and over several Cycladic islands.

Greece "Caryl and Brian's worldwide bicycle adventure" has been a favorite web site of mine for a long time. You can check it out for yourself from my links section. One thing I like about it is the way she manages to weave in historic tales with her bicycle traveling stories, and do it in a very direct compelling way. You know what they say about imitation, about it being sincere and flattering and all that. Apparently it isn't all bad. Anyway, ignoring the history in Greece would be like ignoring your parents when your at their house. It's very difficult. So, especially during this first half of this story, you'll find plenty of digressions about that subject. I was thinking of making this a truly internet worthy experience by including buttons that let you skip comments about history, or continue from one history paragraph to the next. Greece arrests terror suspect
Police and forensic experts during Wednesday's raid in Athens ATHENS, Greece Greek police say they have arrested a suspected member of the notorious group November 17 which in almost three decades of armed attacks have never had a member brought into custody. Athens police chief Fotis Nassiakos told reporters that a man in custody for a botched bombing attempt last week may be the first member of the elusive group arrested. Nassiakos said on Thursday that Savvas Xeros' fingerprints had linked him to a car used during the murder of Greek shipping tycoon Costis Peraticos in 1997 an act attributed to November 17. Xeros, a 40-year-old artist, was in a critical but stable condition in hospital after the bomb he was carrying exploded Saturday in Pireaus, Greece's biggest port. Nassiakos told reporters that officers had found a stash of weapons during a raid on a hide-out in central Athens on Wednesday.
