THE DIFFERENCE OVER THE NAME “REPUBLIC OF MACEDONIA” The U.N. Security Council, by its resolution 817/1993, specifically noted that “a difference has arisen over the name of the State (i.e., of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia) which needs to be resolved in the interest of the maintenance of peaceful and good-neighbourly relations in the region”. In less diplomatic terms, this means that the Security Council reached the conclusion that the name “Republic of Macedonia” could prove a threat to peace and to good neighbourly relations in the Balkans. It was in this spirit that the UN admitted the applicant state to membership under the provisional name “Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia” (FYROM), while at the same time asked the Co-Chairman of the Steering Committee of the International Conference of Former Yugoslavia Mr. Cyrus Vance and Lord Owen to offer their good offices to settle the difference and to promote confidence-building measures. Nevertheless, despite long negotiations under the Co-Chairmen in New York, last year, President Gligorov refused categorically to co-operate toward a settlement of the difference over the name. Indeed, in his letter to Secretary General Boutros-Ghali, on 29 May 1993, he registered his opposition to the Security Council’s resolution concerning the name by stating his “firm conviction that our constitutional name (“Republic of Macedonia”) does not imply territorial or other aspirations whatsoever” and, consequently no change in the name was warranted.

Early Greece
Greece is a small country by the Mediterranean Sea where the first European civilization began more than 2,000 years ago. Its capital and largest city is Athens. About one-fifth of the country is made up of islands and no part of Greece is more than 85 miles from the sea. Agriculture is the leading Greek industry. The achievements of ancient Greece in government, science, philosophy and the arts are considered foundations of western culture. Greece came under control of invaders more than 2,000 years ago and did not gain independence until 1829. Since then, it has had many political problems due to weak or undemocratic governments.

The Hellenic Republic Hellas for short and commonly known as Greece , is a country in the southeast of Europe on the southern tip of the Balkan peninsula . Bounded on land by Bulgaria , the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia , and Albania to the north, to the east by Turkey and the waters of the Aegean Sea and to the west and south by the Ionian and Mediterranean Seas. History of Ancient Greece
One of the great paradoxes of history is that the next hesitant advance of European civilization - the development of the first city-states - took place not on the fertile open central European plains, but in a remote island to the south of the Aegean Sea which was completely lacking in metal resources. While the glittering mounted warrior-princes of central Europe dissipated their creative energy in warfare, a highly cultured yet peaceful society, built on trade and an agricultural surplus, emerged on Crete. The history of Greece can be traced back to Stone Age hunters. Later came early farmers and the civilizations of the Minoan and Mycenaean kings. This was followed by a period of wars and invasions, known as the Dark Ages. In about 1100 BC, a people called the Dorians invaded from the north and spread down the west coast. In the period from 500-336 BC Greece was divided into small city states, each of which consisted of a city and its surrounding countryside.

    History
During the Bronze Age (3000-1200 BC) the powerful Cycladic, Minoan and Mycenaean maritime civilisations flourished. According to Homer, this was a time of violence and wars based on trade rivalries, although it is thought that Minoan culture was generally peaceful and harmonious. By the 11th century BC the Minoan and Mycenaean cultures had collapsed due to changing patterns of trade and a Dorian invasion from the north, and a 'dark age' ensued. By 800 BC Greece was undergoing a cultural and military revival, with the evolution of city-states, the most powerful of which were Athens and Sparta. Greater Greece was created, with southern Italy as an important component. This period was followed by an era of great prosperity known as the classical (or golden) age. During this time, Pericles commissioned the Parthenon, Sophocles wrote Oedipus the King , Socrates taught young Athenians the rigours of logic, and a tradition of democracy (literally, 'control by the people') was ushered in. The classical age came to an end with the Peloponnesian Wars (431-404 AD) in which the militaristic Spartans defeated the Athenians. While embroiled in the Peloponnesian Wars, the Spartans failed to notice the expansion of Philip of Macedon's kingdom in the north, which enabled him to easily conquer the war-weary city-states. Philip's ambitions were surpassed by his son Alexander the Great, who marched into Asia Minor, Egypt (where he was proclaimed pharaoh and founded the city of Alexandria), Persia and parts of what are now Afghanistan and India. The reign of the Macedonian empire, which lasted in the form of three dynasties after Alexander's death at the age of 33, is known as the Hellenistic period, due to the merging of Greek ideas and culture with the other proud cultures of antiquity, creating a new cosmopolitan tradition.

    Greece History and Culture
History Greece was the birthplace of European civilization. The period from 700BC saw the rise of the great city states of Athens, Corinth and Sparta, frequently engaged in long struggles for supremacy, and uniting only when faced with the common threat of invasion by the Persian Empire. The zenith was reached in the 5th century BC when Athens became the cultural and artistic centre of the Mediterranean, producing magnificent works of architecture, sculpture, drama and literature. Athens lost her empire through a mutually suicidal struggle with her arch rival Sparta.

Stilpo A History of Ancient Greece The Glory That Was Greece Author:      Robert A. Guisepi Date: The glory that was Greece," in the words of Edgar Allan Poe, was short-lived and confined to a very small geographic area. Yet it has influenced the growth of Western civilization far out of proportion to its size and duration. The Greece that Poe praised was primarily Athens during its golden age in the 5th century BC. Strictly speaking, the state was Attica; Athens was its heart. The English poet John Milton called Athens "the eye of Greece, mother of arts and eloquence." Athens was the city-state in which the arts, philosophy, and democracy flourished. At least it was the city that attracted those who wanted to work, speak, and think in an environment of freedom. In the rarefied atmosphere of Athens were born ideas about human nature and political society that are fundamental to the Western world today. The Background: Aegean Civilization, 2000-1200 B.C.

    Ancient Greece - History
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman Greek legend tells that the Aegean Sea was named after the king of Athens, Aegeus. His son Theseus was one of the great heroes of ancient Greece. He was going to fight the Minotaur, a monster of Crete that had the body of a man and the head of a bull. Theseus promised his father, Aegeus, that on the way home he would replace the black sail on his ship with the white one if the journey were successful. But he forgot his promise; Aegeus saw the black sail far out in the sea and threw himself off a cliff.
Washed by the waters of three seas—the Aegean, Ionian, and MediterraneanGreece was a crossroads for different cultures. Its history began on the island of Crete about 6,000 years ago. Major seaways, power, religion, and law were the basis for Crete's developed commerce and trade. At the heart of that civilization was a huge palace at Knossosa city in ancient Crete. Knossos was the capital of the legendary King Minos. This civilization of Crete is also called the Minoan civilization because of him.
The history and culture of ancient Greece is closely tied to the seas and natural forces. Around 1,500 BC, a terrible earthquake happened not far from Crete and destroyed much of the island. Scientists supposed that was one the main causes of the end of the great Crete civilization. It was not completely gone, though. Art, culture, and traditions of Crete had a very strong influence on those of mainland Greece.
