Introduction
From the tiny island of Crete throughout most of the known world ( via Alexander the Great ), the Greek standard of excellence spread. "All men by nature deserve to know" according to Aristotle and the Greek Scholars set out to learn about and put order to their universe. Their independent and individualistic character gave the world democracy. Scientists like Euclid, Pythagoras and Archimedes advanced the study of mathematics, while historians Herodotus and Thucydides brought accuracy, reason and even objectivity to the recording of events. The Greeks investigated the metaphysical as well as the physical worlds and in doing so broadened the base of human knowledge.
Greeks attained the same perfect harmony and proportion in their art that they believed existed in the natural world. Lifelike sculptures of ideal athletes, heroes and gods dominated the classical period while emotion took center stage during the Hellenistic era. The ruins of ancient temples give evidence of the proportion, balance and harmony of classical architecture. Drama was elevated to an art form. Greek art, architecture, drama, scientific achievements, philosophies and government have had a marked influenced on the modern world.

This period marks the rise and fall of the MINOAN and MYCENAEAN civilization. 2200 BCE : Greece - Indo-European invaders, speaking the earliest forms of Greek, enter the mainland of Greece, and the MYCENAEAN CIVILIZATION (named after the leading Greek city on the peninsula from 1200 BCE ) emerges. 1500 BCE : Greece - MINOAN CIVILIZATION (named after the Cretan ruler Minos) reaches its height with its central power in Knossos on the island of Crete. This culture is apparently more female-oriented and peaceful than others at the time. 1400 BCE : Greece - MYCENAEAN CIVILIZATION replaces MINOAN CIVILIZATION after the destruction of Knossos. Bronze weapons, war-scenes on art, Cyclopean defence walls, and the fact that male warriors were buried with their weapons provide evidence for the claim that the Mycenaeans were militaristic. The horse-drawn chariot emerges around this time. The Mycenaeans dominate the Aegean world for about 200 years. 1250 BCE : Greece - Though this is disputed, some scholars believe that the

11th Brittanica: History of Ancient Greece
Ancient Greece to 146 B.C. I. Introductory.- It is necessary to indicate at the outset the scope and object of the present article. The reader must not expect to find in it a compendious summary of the chief events in the history of ancient Greece. It is not intended to supply an "Outlines of Greek History." It may be questioned whether such a sketch of the history, within the limits of space which are necessarily imposed in a work of reference, would be of utility to any class of readers. At any rate, the plan of the present work, in which the subject of Greek history is treated of in a large number of separate articles, allows of the narrative of events being given in a more satisfactory form under the more general of the headings ( e.g. i.e. of the Greek peninsula. For the identification of Greect with Greece proper there may be some degree of excuse when w~ come to the sth and 4th centuries. In the period that lies behinc the year 500 B.C. Greece proper forms but a small part of the Greek world. In the 7th and 6th centuries it is outside Greece itself that we must look for the most active life of the Greel people and the most brilliant manifestations of the Greek spirit The present article, therefore, will be concerned with the cause and conditions of events, rather than with the events themselves it will attempt analysis rather than narrative. Its object wil be to indicate problems and to criticize views; to sugges lessons and parallels, and to estimate the importance of the Hellenic factor in the development of civilization.

Greece is a country in the southeast of Europe on the southern tip of the Balkan peninsula . It is bounded on land by Bulgaria Macedonia and Albania to the north, to the east by Turkey and the waters of the Aegean Sea and to the west and south by the Ionian and Mediterranean Seas . Regarded by many as the cradle of Western civilization, Greece has a long and rich history during which it spread its influence over three continents. Greece is formally called the Hellenic Republic (in Greek Elliniki Dimokratia ). Greeks call their country Hellas , which in modern Greek is pronounced Ellas . In everyday speech the form Ellada is used. Greeks frequently call themselves Hellenes even in English. The English name "Greece" derives from a Latin name, Graecia, originally used for a region in what is now northern Greece inhabited by a people called the Graekos.

The genius of Greek civilization lay more obviously in various facets of

Country Info Greece Introduction Greece General Data Greece Maps Greece Culture ... Greece Time and Date Greece Culture Back to Top Greece was inhabited as early as the Paleolithic period and by 3000 BC had become home, in the Cycladic Islands, to a culture whose art remains among the most evocative in world history. In the second millennium BC, the island of Crete nurtured the maritime empire of the Minoans, whose trade reached from Egypt to Sicily. The Minoans were supplanted by the Mycenaeans of the Greek mainland, who spoke a dialect of ancient Greek. During the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman Empires (1st-19th centuries), Greece's ethnic composition became more diverse. Since independence in 1830 and an exchange of populations with Turkey in 1923, Greece has forged a national state which claims roots reaching back 3,000 years. The Greek language dates back at least 3,500 years, and modern Greek preserves many elements of its classical predecessor. Greek education is free and compulsory for children between the ages of 6 and 15. English language study is compulsory from 4th grade through high school. University education, including books, is also free, contingent upon the student's ability to meet stiff entrance requirements. Overall responsibility for education rests with the Ministry of National Education and Religious Affairs. Private primary and secondary schools are under the authority of the Ministry of National Education. Control is mainly exercised in matters of curriculum and competence of teaching staff, as well as financial control in connection with fee collection and increases in fees. The Greek constitution does not permit the operation of private universities in Greece. Private colleges and universities (mostly foreign), however, do have campuses in Greece in spite of the fact that their degrees are not recognized by the Greek state.

Named Pontus Exinus ("the inhospitable sea"), the Black Sea was navigated and its shores colonized by the Greeks as early as the eighth century before Christ and later by the Romans in the third to first centuries B.C. Hagia Sophia, the "Church of the Holy Wisdom," in Istanbul, was the largest Christian church in the world for 1,000 years. Photo by George Luther. Many of the colonial and commercial activities of ancient Greece and Rome, and of the Byzantine Empire, centered on the Black Sea. After 1453, when the Ottoman Turks occupied Constantinople (and changed its name to Istanbul), the Black Sea was virtually closed to foreign commerce. Nearly 400 years later, in 1856, the Treaty of Paris re-opened the sea to the commerce of all nations. Among its vast historical riches, the Black Sea region is home to the legend of Jason and the Argonauts and their search for the Golden Fleece, and the Biblical account of Noah's Ark. Troy, Constantinople, Istanbul, Sevastopol, Odessa, and Yalta are just a few of the names in this coastal area that have been etched in world history.
