    Greek Geography
Geography is the study of landscape, such as the mountains, the rivers, the plains, the coastline, and the placement of cities. We begin to look at the geography of ancient Greece when we examine how Greeks lived on their farms, why they traded, road systems, and the plant life that ancient Greece had. Geography has always had a great influence on Greece and its inhabitants. It is largely responsible for numerous continuities in its extensive history. While the mountains that split the Greek lands have contributed to localism they have been a major barrier to unity as a nation. The struggle of communication by land and the significant presence of the sea have made mariners out of Greeks for numerous generations. The natural resources ensure a steady flow of abundance and guarantee sustenance if governed wisely. There are enormous obstacles in the way of studying the geography of ancient Greece. One obstacle is that because of the tradition of fragmented land holding; plots of land became very small and rarely have the same names through time. Because of this, archaeologists cannot identify a feature mentioned in a document and go and see what is there today. The second obstacle is that we are separated from the classical Greek landscape by a great gap in time: well over a thousand empty years with almost no relevant written record to show how the landscape was developing. Archaeological survey bridges this gap, but for geographical purposes, this information is extremely limited, in that much of the material found cannot be closely dated.

The island is located in the Eastern Aegean and is approximately 180 miles in distance from Athens. It has an area of 1630 km2, is 70 km long and 45 km wide with a stretching coastline of 320 km.
It is the third largest island in Greece following Crete and Evia respectively. It has a population of approximately 100,000.
    GEOPHYSICAL FEATURES
The greatest part of the island proves a thriving ground for olive groves, while pine forests occupy a large area in the centre. In the west the landscape is more ascetic, scattered with acorns and rocky mountain ranges. The two gulfs, Geras and Kallonis, add to Lesvos' distinctive shape. There are small but fertile plains in the regions of Kallonis, Geras, Ippios and Eressos. Small valleys and springs, mountain ranges and beaches - both sandy and pebble, conveying an image of island and mainland at the same time, form a landscape which at every turn resounds with the Aegean, with Greece.

History and Geography of the Olympic Games in Ancient Greece by Rick Price, PhD. co-owner and co-founder of ExperiencePlus! Specialty Tours, Inc. The Olympics came to us as one of the oldest institutions of Classical Greece. Although the first written record of the games dates to 776 B.C., their origins go back at least five hundred years earlier and are linked to religious events well before that. The games honored Zeus, supreme god of all the Greeks and ruler of the sky (Zeus's brothers Poseidon and Hades ruled the sea and the Underworld, respectively). The Olympic games were officially abolished by the Roman emperor in 394 AD after a run of 1170 years! As god of all kings and of all humans, Zeus ruled from lofty Mt. Olympus north of Athens. His primary role was to keep the peace among those same gods and "men" on earth. In his honor a universal truce applied during the Olympic Games every four years and even though the truce was broken on several occasions, the games were never interrupted as a result of war. The reasons for the location of the games in "Olympia," near the west coast of the Peloponnesian peninsula are lost in history. The site was never a major city or permanent settlement except during the games themselves when tens of thousands of spectators and participants camped on the grounds. Evidence suggests that the site of Olympia was once the location of a religious festival honoring Gaia, the Earth Mother. Indeed, the site must have had strong historic and religious roots as it is located on the western edge of Classical Greece far from the Greek heartland as this

Greece, officially known as the Hellenic Republic, is a state on the Mediterranean Sea, at the very tip of the Balkan Peninsula. It borders Albania, Bulgaria and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia to the north, and Turkey to the east. Its beaches overlook the Ionian and Aegean seas. There are some 3,000 islands under the Greek flag, which comprise about 19% of Greece's total area. The sun-soaked coastline stretches over 13,676km (8,498 miles), providing some of the most magnificent and attractive beaches in the world. Greece is a relatively underdeveloped country agriculturally. Only 23% of the land is arable, and, although in the past Greece boasted some of the most wonderful forests in the world, now only some 20% of the country's area is covered in woodlands and forest. Greece's capital city, Athens,(Population: 3,072,922 ) is also its largest, and is served by Piréas, which is the country's main port. Time Zone
Greece is 2 hours ahead of Greenwich mean time (GMT), or 2 hours ahead of London, 7 hours ahead of New York, 7 hours behind Tokyo, and 6 hours ahead of Buenos Aires.
