Greek Creativity In Culture
The genius of Greek civilization lay more obviously in various facets of
culture than in politics. It was Greek culture that determined the most
lasting contributions of this civilization to the Mediterranean world, and
that served as the key linkage in the larger Hellenistic orbit sketched by
Alexander.
The Greeks did not create a major religion, and in this they differed
from India and to a lesser extent from China. Greek ideas would ultimately

Ancient History One of the great civilizations in the world during the 4th and 3d millennium BC was the Minoan culture of Crete . The Minoan culture is divided in three periods: old, middle and late. The old period was synchronized with the Old Kingdom of Egypt. There were connections between the two cultures through trade, and these influences can be found in the art in both Crete and Egypt. During the middle period, about 1900 BC , the great palaces of Knossos and Phaestos were built. There are debates whether these buildings were housing kings or priests, but it is thought there was a religious association to them. The Great Goddess, perhaps called Rhea was worshipped, and her priests and priestesses had the highest position in the society. During the second millennium BC a series of natural catastrophies plagued the Minoan civilization. At 1700 BC there was a terrible earthquake that destroyed the old palaces, and a second one occurred at about 1450 BC destroying most of the buildings of that time. The Volcano at

Staying healthy while vacationing depends on proactive steps before departure and smart choices while traveling. Ensure that you are in good health before traveling and that you have no serious health problems. Make sure your immunizations are up-to-date. There are no legal immunizations for entry except if you are coming from a yellow fever infected area in which case you will need to show a certificate of vaccination. While traveling it's always safe to update your tetanus, diphtheria, polio, and hepatitis A vaccinations. If you plan on doing lots of traveling in remote areas where you have a higher likelihood of coming into contact with animals, it is best to get a rabies vaccination.

GREECE WEATHER Athens Iraklio Mykonos Santorini Thessaloniki About Us Advertise Contact Us Traveling with Kids From Greece101 Staff Article Tools Print this article Email to a friend In general, Greece is a nice place to travel with children. That being said, there are some things to be prepared for. Most restaurants outside of high-end resorts will not have high chairs or booster seats. Yet is it not uncommon to see children in tavernas and in the summer children running around squares and plateia while their parents dine at the outdoor tavernas. In fact, in the summer months you'll find a surprising number of children who stay up until well past midnight as their parents enjoy a leisurely dinner. Adding to the positive dining experience is the speed at which most taverna food is delivered - restless children will have only a short time to wait. If you are at all worried about your children being exposed to cigarette smoke, be aware that Greece has the highest smoking rate in Europe and therefore any eating establishment will be filled with smokers indoors and outdoors. On November 1, 2002 a law went into effect that mandated a separate indoor non-smoking section at cafes and restaurants, but it is widely ignored.

The museum has collections of sculpture, frescoes, mosaics, icons, and inscriptions from the Byzantine period. It has permanent exhibitions, rooms for temporary thematic exhibitions, conservation workshops, and storerooms. The exhibits include sculptures, wall paintings, mosaic floors, icons, metalwork, coins, inscriptions, glassware, and pottery. At the moment, three permanent exhibitions are open, presenting aspects of the society and the art of the Early Christian period (4 th th cent. ad) with emphasis on the transition from the ancient world to Christianity. The subject of the first exhibition is Early Christian Churches , and it focuses on the design and the decoration of churches in the first centuries after Christianity triumphed. "Ethnicity" is sometimes used as a euphemism for "race", or as a synonym for minority group. Cultural Heritage
A country's cultural heritage includes all traces of human activity in the physical environment. These are irreplaceable sources of information on people's lives and activities, and on the historical development of artistic and technical skills. Because monuments and sites and cultural environments are non-renewable resources, their management must be based on a long-term perspective. Cultural monuments and sites are a source of emotional and aesthetic experience for many people, and modern society can benefit from the preservation and active use of its heritage. The Directorate for Cultural Heritage is responsible for the management of all archaeological and architectural monuments and sites and cultural environments in accordance with the relevant legislation. The Directorate is under the Ministry of the Environment and plays a central role in public environmental management. Each county has a service responsible for cultural conservation in connection with the general administration of cultural affairs. The tasks of this service are to advise the county administration on questions of cultural conservation and to ensure that protected monuments and sites and cultural environments are taken into account in planning processes at the county and the municipal level. The S¡mediggi (Sami Parliament) has the same tasks as the county cultural heritage service in the Saami areas.

The Directorate of the Archive of Monuments and Publications is one of the six central Departments of the General Directorate of Antiquities of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture . The Archive of Monuments has two primary responsibilities: a) the protection and documentation of the Historic Archive of the Archaeological Service and b) the creation and maintenance of a National Archive of Monuments. The Historic Archive of the Archaeological Service contains administrative documents pertaining to the work of the Service and dates from 1833. The Hellenic Archaeological Service, the official governmental body charged with the protection and preservation of antiquities, coordinates all archaeological activity in Greece. As a result, this archive provides a unique record of all the important actions undertaken by the Greek State for the protection and preservation of Greek antiquities and covers many areas of interest for the study of the history of archaeology, and the development of the discipline from the formative years of the country to the present day. The Archive of Monuments has undertaken the organisation, documentation and protection of this major archive, with the aim of making it accessible to the international scientific community. Our department has already collected the various sections of the archive, and has commenced the cataloguing of the contents of the archive and the conservation of its contents.
