Thessaloniki, the second largest city in greece with a population of1,000,000 inhabitants, is one of the oldest cities in Europe.
http://uranus.ee.auth.gr/new/eng/thessaloniki.html
Thessaloniki, the second largest city in Greece with a population of 1,000,000 inhabitants, is one of the oldest cities in Europe. It stretches over twelve kilometers in a bowl formed by low hills facing a bay that opens into the Gulf Thermaikos. It was founded about 315 B.C., on a site of old prehistoric settlements going back to 2300 B.C., by Cassander, King of Macedonia, and was named after his wife, Thessaloniki, sister of Alexander The Great . Since then, Thessaloniki has become the chief city of Macedonia and its most important commercial port. In Roman times it was visited by Saint Paul, who preached the new religion, and who later addressed his two well-known epistles (the oldest written documents of Christian literature) to the Christians of Thessaloniki.
The Byzantine times
In Byzantine times, Thessaloniki became a cultural and artistic centre second only to Constantinople in the whole empire. Great names are closely associated with the city's Byzantine past - the jurist Peter Magister, the epigrammatist Macedonius Hypatus, the Hymnographer Archbishop Joseph, Leo the Mathematician, the historian John Cameniates, the prolific Homeric scholar and humanist Eustathius ( Archbishop of Thessaloniki), the philologist Thomas M. Magister, the teacher of law and editor of the "Hexabiblus" Constantine Armenopoulos, the theologian Gregory Palamas ( Archbishop of Thessaloniki), to mention but a few prominent scholars. The missionary brothers Cyril and Methodius also have a special place in the history of the period; they invented and used the Cyrillic Alphabet to bring literacy and Christianity to the Slavs.

Historical Sites
Greece is awash with ancient sites that fire the imagination, stir the soul and blow your mind with their sheer immensity. Worship of the all-powerful Olympian gods, aided by the availability of slave labour in ancient times, led to the construction of vast and magnificent temples, sanctuaries and statues on a scale that this world is unlikely to ever witness again. Wars, earthquakes and various other natural and manmade disasters have tragically led to the destruction of many of these great architectural wonders. But there are still enough remains of Classical Greece to attract eager hordes of visitors from all corners of the globe. You don't have to be a history or archaeology buff to fall under the spell of these ancient sites where mythology and mystery ooze from the ruins of once-mighty structures fit for the gods. The Acropolis must be the most famous ancient monument in the world, towering over the Greek capital and still awesome in its majesty despite centuries of damage and the swarms of tourists who simply can't get enough of it. A trip up to the Parthenon is one of those "must do" visits on the itinerary of any self-respecting tourist passing through Athens . Amid the smog, traffic chaos and modern urban sprawl of the capital, the temple of the goddess Athena beckons irresistibly from practically every corner of this huge city.

http://americanhistory.si.edu/corinth/
Corinth, situated in the northeast corner of the Peloponnesus on the Isthmus of Corinth, was one of the largest cities in ancient Greece and a rival of Athens. The city controlled overland access to the Peloponnesus and to continental Greece, as well as the maritime ways to the East and West of the Mediterranean. In time, Corinth started to create a string of daughter cities, colonies such as Leukas, Ambrakia (Arta), Anactorium, Dyrrhachium (Durazzo) and even Terina in southern Italy and Syracuse in Sicily. All these cities followed Corinth's monetary system. Coinage was essential to Corinth as an important commercial center. After Aegina, Corinth was one of the earliest cities in Greece to strike and use coinsin the 7th century B.C. Her silver staters, the "colts" or "poloi" (in Greek), issued from the earliest times, carried on their obverse the winged Pegasus, wondrous horse of Greek mythology, connected with Poseidon, god of the sea, and with Athena, goddess of wisdom. Her helmeted head graced the reverse of the Corinthian staters from the late 6th century B.C. onwards. One century later, about 415 B.C., small letters and symbols were added to the reverses of these staters. The purpose of these little symbols, in a great variety of shapes and figures, has long been inconclusively debated. Nevertheless, their forms are clear enough to be identified, and thus we can admire a long series of items, such as weapons

of Hellenic Culture in Greece, the relatively new idea of city-states gave rise to heavyweights such as Athens and Sparta, very powerful entities with complete govenments. The mega-nations of modern times came much later. Greece travel today may give you the feel that there is much of the older ideas that they still happily embrace.
For example... there are thirteen regions of Greece, each with a capital city. Dodecanese is the most southeastern region, consisting of several large islands, including the island of Karpathos. The capital on Karpathos is also called Karpathos, or sometimes Pigadea. It is known for unique houses of carved stone, and a harbor as beautiful as any on earth. The friendly townspeople dress in traditional clothing daily, not just for their grand weddings and feasts, which are famous thoughout Greece. At restaurants they serve traditional local dishes including memoula, hummus (chickpeas), pilau rice, and baklava (honey and nut pastries).
On the northern end of the island is the mountainous community of Olimpos, also called Olympus. This is a mistake, because it confuses me and a whole lot of other people. You see, there is Mt. Olympus in Central Greece, and Olympia in the Peloponnese region. Going to one when intending to go to the other is a major, common tourist error, but one you will now be saved from making.

Olimpos is quite an intersting place, mountainous and rugged in opposition to the magnificent beaches of the coast. Take a look at the photos above, and do notice the windmills of the middle right picture.

1000 BCE : Greece - The earliest known prehistoric civilizations occupy the Aegean world. This period marks the rise and fall of the MINOAN and MYCENAEAN civilization. 2200 BCE : Greece - Indo-European invaders, speaking the earliest forms of Greek, enter the mainland of Greece, and the MYCENAEAN CIVILIZATION (named after the leading Greek city on the peninsula from 1200 BCE ) emerges. 1500 BCE : Greece - MINOAN CIVILIZATION (named after the Cretan ruler Minos) reaches its height with its central power in Knossos on the island of Crete. This culture is apparently more female-oriented and peaceful than others at the time. 1400 BCE : Greece - MYCENAEAN CIVILIZATION replaces MINOAN CIVILIZATION after the destruction of Knossos. Bronze weapons, war-scenes on art, Cyclopean defence walls, and the fact that male warriors were buried with their weapons provide evidence for the claim that the Mycenaeans were militaristic. The horse-drawn chariot emerges around this time. The Mycenaeans dominate the Aegean world for about 200 years. 1250 BCE : Greece - Though this is disputed, some scholars believe that the
