Cities ATHENS, SPARTA , AND THEBES Cities in ancient Greece were of all shapes and sizes. They also have all different populations. The main city or capitol of Greece as Athens. SPARTA Sparta is located in southern Greece. The city is protected on three sides by mountains. It was one of the most powerful city-states in all of Greece. Women owned two fifths of the entire city. If a spartan citizen could not pay his taxes, his family lost their home and their citizenship. Sparta was famous throughout Greece for it's military power and loyalty of it's soldiers. Children that were unhealthy or would not make a good soldier were left in the mountains to die. The healthy boys were taken to train for the Spartan Military at age seven. For the Spartan Soldiers it was the highest honor to die defending his country. The Spartan Slaves were called Helots. They were taken over by the Spartan Military. Every year, the Spartans declared war on the Helots to eliminate the sick and weak without breaking murder laws. ATHENS Athens was the capital of Greece. It was built on an acropolis or rocky hill. Acropolis means "High city" because it stood above all others. It was one of the first city-states in Greece. The first king of Athens was Cecrops. After a brutal war with the Persians, Athens began to rebuild the city. One of their highest achievements was the Parthenon, a marble temple for the goddess Athena. They also built a great outdoor theater. By 1,200 B.C. Athens had a wall around most of the acropolis. in 431 B.C. the war with the Peloponesian interrupted the construction of the temple Propylaea. They never finished. Athens was a city that will always be remembered in history.

The ancient Greeks (mainly the Athenians ) were a unique people. They believed that individuals should be free as long as they acted within the laws of Greece. This allowed them the opportunity to excel in any direction they chose. Individuality, as the Greeks viewed it, was the basis of their society. The ability to strive for excellence, no matter what the challenge, was what the Athenians so dearly believed in. This strive for excellence was the method from which they achieved such phenomenal accomplishments. These accomplishments astound us to this day. They also believed in the balance of mind and body. Although many of them strove to become soldiers and athletes , others ventured into philosophy, drama pottery and the arts . The two most important concepts which the ancient Greeks followed were found inscribed on the great shrine of Delphi, which read "Nothing in excess" and "Know thyself". This philosophy greatly impacted the Greek civilization. Athens was the intellectual center of Greece. It was one of the first city-states of its time, and is still world renowned as one of the most famous cities in the world. It was named after Athena, the goddess of wisdom and the city's patron. In 508 BC, Athens became one of the first societies in ancient times to establish democracy. Democracy came from the Greek words

Hellenic Greece is the ancient civilization of Hellas in what is modern Greece. The people are called Hellenes. After the collapse of Mycenae around 1100 B.C., the Greek cities fell into decline and the country entered into a dark age such that the classical Greek alphabet reflects nothing of the Mycenaean syllabary.

    City-States in Ancient Greece
Ancient Greece was made up of many city-states. A city-state was a state made up of many separate cities. Another name for city-state is polis. When the city-states were formed together they made one large country. Most city-states started as an oligarchy, then monarchy, then became a democracy. Each city-state governed itself. City-states were often at war with each other. Some city-states joined together to become larger. From 700-500 B.C. people founded new city-states along the Mediterranean and Black Seas. Two of the main city-states were Athens and Sparta. In the Spartan city-state boys and girls trained to build a strong military. Athens was the capitol of Ancient Greece. Athens was also the most famous city-state. Athens had the first democracy, and because of Athens we have a democracy.

    Government in Ancient Greece
There were three types of government in Ancient Greece: an oligarchy, monarchy, and a democracy. An oligarchy was governed by a few wealthy and powerful people. A monarchy was governed by only one person. A democracy is when citizens voted on who the leader was and public matters. Citizens were only men who had Greek origin and were not slaves. If citizens did not care for a politician, when they voted, they wrote on a clay tablet which person they wanted to leave Athens. If one person got more than 6,000 votes against him, he couldn't come back to Athens for 10 years.

Religion Classical period In 510 BC a man named Cleisthenes (cl-ICE-then-eez), who was an aristocrat (a rich, powerful man) in Athens, invented another new type of government, the democracy . Cleisthenes, like other aristocrats, wanted to get more power. But tyrants had gotten unpopular in Athens. Cleisthenes decided to give even more power to poor people. He organized a new way of making political decisions. Every Athenian man would have one vote, and they would all meet and vote on what to do. The big meeting was called the Assembly.
But all the men couldn't meet every day; they had to work . So there was also a smaller council of 500 men, who were chosen by a lottery, and changed every year. Seems like Cleisthenes AND the other aristocrats would be out of power? But he arranged the voting so that his family, the Alcmaeonids (alk-MEE-oh-nids), would have more votes than anyone else. In 490 BC the Persians attacked Athens. Everybody was very frightened, because the Persians were great fighters. Some people thought Athens should go back to the old system of government, the

    History of Ancient Greece
One of the great paradoxes of history is that the next hesitant advance of European civilization - the development of the first city-states - took place not on the fertile open central European plains, but in a remote island to the south of the Aegean Sea which was completely lacking in metal resources. While the glittering mounted warrior-princes of central Europe dissipated their creative energy in warfare, a highly cultured yet peaceful society, built on trade and an agricultural surplus, emerged on Crete. The history of Greece can be traced back to Stone Age hunters. Later came early farmers and the civilizations of the Minoan and Mycenaean kings. This was followed by a period of wars and invasions, known as the Dark Ages. In about 1100 BC, a people called the Dorians invaded from the north and spread down the west coast. In the period from 500-336 BC Greece was divided into small city states, each of which consisted of a city and its surrounding countryside.
