Nation euphoric over discovery of the Lyceum
January 16, 1997
Web posted at: 11:30 p.m. EST (0430 GMT) ATHENS (CNN) Excavators in Greece say they've stumbled across the Lyceum, the school where Aristotle taught his pupils science and philosophy 2,500 years ago. In essence, it's the birthplace of Western modern science and philosophy. It was here that Aristotle exhalted the virtues of a sound mind and body to his pupils. "We are very, very happy. This is a very, very important discovery. We have now, here, in Athens, the main proof about the historical continuity of the Hellenic cultural heritage," said Greek Cultural Minister Venizelos Evangelos. Considered the holy grail of Greek archeology, the Lyceum was discovered by crews preparing for the construction of a new Museum of Modern Art. "Aristotle stands at the foundation of modern European science and a great deal of European philosophical thought, and so it's extremely exciting just to know where Aristotle would have been walking, when he was teaching, what kind of rooms he would have been teaching in," said Dr. Jeremy Tanner, of the London Institute of Archeology. For 170 years, since Greeks gained independence from the Turks, they have scoured the landscape to find the birthplace of Western civilization.

A compilation of resources on the Ancient Near East, published by the Oriental Institute, a "museum and research organization devoted to the study of the ancient Near East." Founded in 1919 by James Henry Breasted, the Institute, a part of the University of Chicago, is "an internationally recognized pioneer in the archaeology, philology, and history of early Near Eastern civilizations." This site lists research projects in the area, museum collections on the Near East, and special sections dealing with each part of the Near Eastern archeology (Egypt, Mesopotamia, Iran, Anatolia, the Levant, Cyprus). It also includes photographic archives of the relevant regions.
    • ArchNet
The University of Connecticut, under the direction of Thomas Plunkett, has created a visually wonderful and informative site called ArchNet. It "provides access to archaeological resources available on the Internet." Graphic images connect the searcher to his/her query. There are hundreds of links to archeological Internet sites. ArchNet is organized into two main sections: regional and subject heading. There is a helpful hyper-link map to guide the user to the region of her/his interest. WHY ARE WE SPECIAL?
In addition to the 'must see' sights on any tour, we include many other important and unique points of interest that are seldom offered by other companies.
We take care of all the details from baggage handling to gratuities to hotel staff, waiters and porters.
Each tour is organized yet flexible, educational yet fun and above all personal. We do only Greece...no wonder we do it better! WHAT ABOUT PRICES? Naturally each tour is different but you will not find another tour to Greece of this quality at anywhere near our prices!

Your e-mail: Write to us! The Temple of Zeus in Athens The Olympion, or the temple of Zeus, across from the Acropolis, attracts far fewer tourists than the rest of the sites at the Acropolis. Those tourists don't know what they are missing! Yes, it's true, there are only 15 columns still standing, but what columns they are indeed! The building was completed in 131 BC. It was a colossal temple dedicated the god Zeus. It is now an enchanting archaeological site with its little well-kept garden. You can see the Acropolis and the hoards of tourists from the temple. You'll feel like you're the only person on earth at the feet of its gigantic columns.

Athens Museum Guide The National Archeological Museum
The National Archeology Museum is located at #24 28th October St. (commonly known as Pattision St.), Athens 10682 Greece. See Maps in main menu for exact location. The museum hours are really odd and its best to call ahead: Tel: 210-821-7717/724. Closed major holidays. On a good day hours are 8am to 7pm. The museum is closed until Aug 2004 for rennovations. " Toe Ethniko Museo " is what to say to the taxi driver. The museum consists of some 48 rooms on 2 floors and is the largest museum in Greece. It displays the most important collection of Greek sculpture in the world and the 4th most important collection of Eygptian (rooms 40-41) artifacts in Europe. Plan on 3 hours minimum to see this museum. The museum is too small to display everything and with the finding of 30,000 more ancient objects during the construction of the new Athens Metro, no doubt many priceless works will remain hidden. The biggest collection is of sculpture, rooms 7 to 33 and traces its evolution from 700 BC to the beginning of Byzantine times.
