There may well have been Jews, if not Jewish communities, living in Greek cities as far back as the Babylonian Exile (586-530 B.C.E.). After the wars of the Maccabees, between 170 and 161 B.C.E., many Hellenized Jews left Judaea and settled in the new commercial centers, such as Alexandria and Antioch, of the Hellenistic world. From these communities smaller groups moved to some of the coastal Aegean cities such as Ephesus, Smyrna, Thessaloniki, and, according to tradition, Chalkis. Jewish communities also may have been founded on Crete at this time. In any case, by the time of the Apostle Paul there were flourishing Jewish communities in most of the major Greek cities.

http://www.hol.gr/greece/grkpg1.htm
Ancient Greece, the cradle of western civilisation, was a land of small city-states whose people shared a language and a set of religious beliefs . Here, for a brief moment in the long history of humanity, men of genius, men of spirit, men of vision lived, created and set foundations. Words that they spoke more than 2,000 years ago are still vital and inspiring today. Before the Greeks came into the Mediterranean world, man was primarily oriented toward death and built his monuments in honor of death. The zigurats of Babylon and the pyramids of Egypt testify to the hold of death upon these early civilizations. To the Greeks, however, life is the most significant fact in the world, and human life is the greatest wonder on earth. The Greeks were the first people to play. Their famous Olympic Games are witness to their boundless enthusiasm for living. Their art speaks of the pleasure they derive from the form of the human body. But the Greeks were also well known for their achievments in sciences such as philosophy and medicine Man was a miracle above the other creatures because he possessed what they called logos. Logos in Greek means a word by which a thought is expressed. It can also mean the thought itself, or reason. The Greeks were the first people to say that the world was knowable, because they believed in man's power of reason. They had no idea of changing their own life or the world around them through the knowledge acquired by reason. The world was something to be understood and admired as it was. Through understanding the nature of the universe and the nature of man, a Greek believes he has the key to understanding man's own place in the scheme of things.

Grade 5 Projects
Welcome to our Ancient History Projects on the Web
Graphic based on a lithograph "Side View of the Great Sphinx,
Pyramids of Geezeh" by David Roberts Introduction: Grade Five and Six students from The International School of Amsterdam have worked on several investigative projects in 1996-97 and 1997-98. In Spring 1997 grade six students spent a month studying Ancient Egypt . They worked in pairs or in threes studying different aspects: the geography, the history, religion, the social structure and daily life and technology. Following the Egyptian project, students chose another civilization they wanted to learn more about. The choices included the Romans Greeks Celts Vikings ... Incas , Aztecs, Chinese , Etruscans, Maoris , and North American Indians. The groups then made a presentation to their classmates using multi-media authoring tools and in August 1997 a number of their projects were added to our Grade 6 Social Studies Web Site with links to other Internet resources and related school projects.

75. Ancient Empires
A game focusing on ancient Rome and greece, France, northern Africa and other imperial powers of the preRenaissance, featuring online information on its players, history and themes.
http://www.ancientempires.net/
Home Welcome to the newly renovated website for Ancient Empires. The realms of Ancient Empires have a long and bewilderingly convoluted history. This is but the latest incarnation of a great game. During the past month or so, the game itself has been transitioning from it's eternal, 'BETA' status, to an open game. What this means is that for the immediate future, the game is stable. The existing areas should not see any radical changes, and the players should not suffer the ill effects of widespread changes. The other major change to the game is that it's DNS has been moved to a more stable machine. It turns out that our old DNS Server, an aging DEC AlphaStation, was suffering some erratic issues with it's network interface. We have replaced that computer with something more reliable, and this in turn should improve the response from our DNS server. Connecting to the game is simple. Just fire up your favorite telnet or mud client and point yourself to mud.ancientempires.net on port 5011

    Bring Ancient History to Life!
The civilizations of ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome are among the most engaging of teaching themes. This week, Education World presents five lessons for teaching about those ancient cultures. The lessons challenge students to use and translate hieroglyphics, solve math problems using Roman numerals, learn about gods and goddesses, explore the society of ancient Egypt, and draw like an Egyptian. Included: Share your best ideas for teaching about ancient cultures.
    New Resource!
Teacher Max Fischer has just published a new book, The Math of Ancient History , which presents 100 realistic word problems based upon life in various ancient civilizations. The problems emphasize the use of numerous problem-solving strategies suggested by the National Council of the Teachers of Mathematics. The Math of Ancient History allows math instructors to integrate their subject with a middle school ancient history curriculum without interrupting the continuity of their own curriculum.
