Great Depression
American Cultural History
B y the 1930s money was scarce because of the depression, so people did what they could to make their lives happy. Movies were hot, parlor games and board games were popular. People gathered around radios to listen to the Yankees. Young people danced to the big bands. Franklin Roosevelt influenced Americans with his Fireside Chats. The golden age of the mystery novel continued as people escaped into books, reading writers like Agatha Christie, Dashiell Hammett, and Raymond Chandler.

T he purpose of this web and library guide is to help the user gain a broad understanding and appreciation for the culture and history of the 1930s. In a very small way, this is a bibliographic essay. While there is no way we can link to everything, we have attempted to find areas of special interest and to select information that we hold dear today - movies we watch, songs we sing, events that move us, people we admire. T o see the whole picture, we encourage users to browse all the way through this page and then visit the suggested links for more information on the decade. We feel the best way to immerse oneself in a topic is to use both Internet and the library. The real depth of information is best read in books. More photographs, more information, more depth. Then, there is information that will be found only on the Internet; a journal from someone, photographs like those on our pages. If you can add a valuable site or information to this page, we invite you to

The New Deal Network
http://www.newdeal.feri.org

The New Deal Network offers visitors ample resources on American politics, culture, and economy during the 1930s and 1940s. The material includes photographs, primary documents (letters, newspaper articles, speeches, etc.), and political cartoons. In addition to general information, visitors can also access lesson plans and classroom projects. There are also bibliographic lists and site links for additional information. The information contained on the New Deal Network is very reliable and well referenced. The only drawback to the site is its load time. When accessing extensive documents lists or simply browsing, New Deal Network occasionally requires an extended load time. However, the quality of the resources contained on the site makes the wait worthwhile!

Without question it is the most site on the subject of the Great Depression and the New Deal. It is sponsored by the Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute and the Institute for Learning Technologies at Teachers College, Columbia University. This is a portal or "Meta" site to many aspects of the Great Depression and New Deal. Primary resources abound in the "New Deal Document Library." Browse the collection by subject, date, author, or publisher. Perhaps more interesting to students is the photo gallery, well organized by subject, including the arts, construction, social programs, and federal agencies. Teachers will find lesson plans and information to help them discover local and state New Deal resources. The Student Showcase includes classroom-created web sites that document local history, such as Rocky Gap High School's Bland County (VA) History Archives, which includes oral histories. Click on Subjects and learn about the town's farming, churches, logging, and schools through poignant black-and-white photographs and brief text.

This lesson plan is a guide for teachers that will result in imaginary WPA interviews similar to those found in the American Life Histories, 1936-1940 of the American Memory Collection of the Library of Congress website that demonstrate students' interpretation of the question "Was the New Deal North Carolina's 'Reconstruction'?" A 1930's view of the Atlantic Beach boardwalk, bath houses, and old casino, where dances, concerts-and sometimes professional boxing matches-were held. from "The Fighter Who Wouldn't," The State , October, 1986, page 21.
A written WPA report on an imaginary North Carolina resident who lived during the Reconstruction and Depression eras is the product of this assignment. Students must complete research of the American Life Histories, 1936-1940 from the American Memory Collection , select an occupation for future research, and explore additional print and electronic sources. The "interview" must be historically accurate, support a thesis that answers the question, and include an appropriate sensory illustration. The Student Project
    Objectives
The student project will demonstrate mastery of a variety of objectives that include creative writing, historical appreciation and criticism, recognition of bias, and incorporation of text and illustration reflecting primary source research.
