Born on 6th september 1860 in Ballarat, Australia he became a self made millionaire confectionary manufacturer. In 1928 he financed an exploring expedition by motor vehicles which made the circuit of Australia. In 1929 he also financed a combined British, Australian and New Zealand Antarctic Expedition. His philanthropy continued in 1933 when he significantly funded the Melbourne Centenery Celebrations. He is remembered in the croquet world when he presented a silver mounted shield for International competition in 1925. He died on 20th August 1945.
At the time of its inaugeration in 1925, the only matches played at this level were between Australia and England . They were joined by New Zealand in 1930 although it was not until 1935 that all three countries competed for the trophy at the same time. A subtle change of name took place in 1979 when "England" became "Great Britain and Ireland" although they will revert to the title "Great Britain" in 1996. In 1993 the U.S.A. entered the competition for the first time.

The thesis The Czechoslovak Air Force in Britain, 1940-1945 was submitted to the University of Southampton in 1998 and subsequently accepted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Since its publication, the thesis has generated considerable controversy amongst surviving veterans because of the detailed exposure of the attitudes of the RAF, the Air Ministry and the British Government towards the Czechoslovak Air Force and its political administration headed by Dr Edvard Beneš. The study also closely examines tensions within the Czechoslovak High Command which led to political considerations often being preferred over strictly military objectives.
The material for the study has been extensively drawn from two major archives, the Public Record Office in London and the Vojensky historicky archiv in Prague. Approximately 95% of the material in the study is from the primary sources located in these archives. A comprehensive bibliography comprised of memoirs, statistical records and general historical accounts was also consulted.
The thesis is available in Adobe Acrobat PDF format. The program for reading PDF files may be obtained free from the Adobe website by clicking

Convent Schools (Great Britain)
Convent education is treated here not historically but as it is at the present day, and, by the way of introduction, it may be briefly stated that the idea of including the education of the young amongst the occupations of a religious community is practically as old as that of the religious life for women itself. From the earliest times it was customary in England for children to be educated in convents, and we know that the nuns who went forth from Wimborne in the eighth century to help St. Boniface in his work of evangelizing Saxony, established convent schools wherever they went, in which a very high standard of scholarship was attained. Stray remarks in Chaucer and other medieval writers likewise reveal the fact that the English convent schools of the Middle Ages compared favourably with schools for the other sex. But all this came to an end at the Reformation, so far as England was concerned; and, save for one notable exception, English convent education had practically to start afresh in the nineteenth century. The exception referred to was the bar Convent at York, belonging to the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary, whose foundress, Mary Ward, was the pioneer of religious congregations devoted to the education of English girls. The bar Convent was established in 1686, and in spite of penal laws, Protestant persecution, no-popery riots, and even, on more than one occasion, the imprisonment of the nuns for their faith, the work of the convent has continued from that day to this, and with its hundred and eighty houses in different parts of the English-speaking world, the Institute of the B. V. M. has long held a foremost place amongst the teaching orders of the Church.

Shrines of Our Lady and the Saints in Great Britain and Ireland
I. SANCTUARIES OF OUR LADY A. England (1) Abingdon St. Edward the Martyr and St. Dunstan, Archbishop of Canterbury, both encouraged pilgrimages to Our Lady of Abingdon, causing it to be resorted to by crowds of pious persons. (2) Canterbury At the east end of St. Augustine's monastery was an oratory of Our Lady built by King Ethelbert in which reposed the bodies of many saints. The old Chronicler informs us that "in it the Queen of heaven did often appear; in it was the brightness of miracles made manifest; in it the voices of angels, and the melodious strains of holy virgins were frequently heard". (3) Caversham, Berks A chapel of Our Lady in the church of the Austin Canons was a centre of great devotion, where rich offerings were made by Countess Isabel of Warwick, Elizabeth of York, queen-consort of Henry VII, and by Henry VIII in his youthful days. The entire image was plated with silver. (4) Coventry A celebrated image of Our Lady was here greatly venerated. With it are associated the glorious names of Leofric, Earl of Mercia, and his wife, the Countess Godgifu (Godiva). The splendid abbey church founded by them in 1043 surpassed all others in the land in princely, even royal magnificence. It was spoken of as the glory of England and contained dazzling treasures. On her death Godgifu sent a rich chaplet of precious gems to be hung round
