(i.e. those with [apparently] 300 maps at least) Back to the Web Images Main Menu explanatory note about Web Images Size, of course, is not necessarily the most important consideration. Praise should be concentrated on those sites that provide high resolution images - i.e. those of research quality, in which every name is clearly legible - organised around a coherent theme, and properly referenced. Happily, many of those in this summary listing meet those requirements. Some of the sites, such as the Library of Congress's 'American Memory' or David Rumsey's privately sponsored Collection, are deservedly well known. Others of comparable size are not. Of note are the large numbers of high quality images on, for example, the New South Wales 'Parish Map' site (30,000), and the 85,000 19th century plans of Great Britain available via the Landmark/Ordnance Survey site. The sites are given in the order they appear in this listing and linked to the relevant page or section. NB. Many are still being developed and the totals given may be out of date.

Woburn Abbey (Woburn, Bedfordshire): A Cistercian abbey for 4 centuries, Woburn Abbey, the seat of the dukes of Bedford, has been visited by everyone from Queen Victoria to Marilyn Monroe. You'll see Queen Victoria's bedroom, and the Canaletto room, with its 21 perspectives of Venice. The grounds, more popular than the house, include the Wild Animal Kingdom, the best zoological collection in England after the London Zoo. Hatfield House (Hertfordshire): Hatfield was the childhood home of Elizabeth I, who was under an oak tree there when she learned she had become queen of England. Hatfield remains one of England's largest and finest country houses, with antiques, tapestries, paintings, and even the red silk stockings Elizabeth I wore. Windsor Castle (Windsor, Berkshire): The largest inhabited stronghold in the world and England's largest castle, Windsor Castle has been a royal abode since William the Conqueror constructed a motte and bailey on the site 4 years after conquering England. Severely damaged by fire in 1992, the castle has been mainly restored. Its major attraction is the great Perpendicular Chapel of St. George's, begun by Edward IV. The chancel is known for its three-tiered stalls, with its misericords (ledges used for support) and ornate carvings.

    Introduction
‘Historical’ GIS systems can be grouped into four categories: Systems holding historical data without a time dimension. Examples abound. Most archaeological GISs record the locations of ‘finds’ rather than reconstructing the past. Systems including time as a series of cross-sectional coverages, with obvious applicability to working with historical censuses. Systems implementing a time dimension within mainstream GIS technology. One example is the Belgian historical GIS which holds sequences of separate coverages for each province, then assembles a national map from these using a concordance table identifying the appropriate provincial coverage for any date (de Moor and Wiedemann, 2001). A purer implementation is the original Great Britain historical GIS, described below.

Diolch yn fawr. A Brief History of Wales Peter N. Williams, a native Welshman, has written a "Brief History of Wales" comprising 19 chapters and covering the whole sweep of Welsh history, as part of the Britannia Internet Magazine. The goal of his work is to tell the story from the Welsh point of view and to place the culture and language of the people in their proper historical context. http://www.britannia.com/wales/whist.html A Comprehensive Listing of the Medieval Fortifications of England and Wales Philip Davis, a contributor to the Castles of Wales web site, has launched his own site that is destined to become a valuable resource for anyone interested in researching British Castles. His project is called "A Comprehensive Listing of the Medieval Fortifications of England and Wales" and lists an astounding 3,967 castle sites. In creating the site Mr Davis has combined the best academic resources currently available concerning the castles of England and Wales into a single comprehensive resource. The database is divided into six regions - five for England and one for Wales - and includes each castle's name or names, type, location (county), Ordnance Survey coordinates, documentary source information, and a description of the remains. This impressive database is supplemented by the site's extensive bibliography and collection of links to other castle sites on the net.

MONROE COUNTY SINCE 1817 Monroe County was established in July, 1817, as one of the first steps in the organization of Michigan Territory after the War of 1812. Then the old settlement of Frenchtown which centered upon this square took the name of Monroe and became the county seat, September, 1817. At first Monroe County included the lands now Lenawee and Washtenaw Counties. After the latter were established Lenawee was attached to Monroe County for administrations, 1822-26. Controversy Over the country's southeastern boundary culminated in the bloodless Michigan-Ohio was 1835-36. In settlement the U.S. congress gave Ohio Monroe County lands that became Toledo. Michigan in return obtained its Upper Peninsula. WAYNE STOCKADE On a site 50 to 100 yards to the east of this marker a blockhouse surrounded by a stockade was erected in 1806 by action of Congress as a "defense against the Indians". General William Hull, commanding the American Army of the Northwest, made his headquarters there July 2, 1812, when he received work of the declaration of war against Great Britain. His army was encamped on the south bank of River Raisin and marched from there on Detroit. Here at Wayne stockade two weeks and two days later Captain Harry Brush refused to be included in Hull's surrender at Detroit. The British in revenge burned the blockhouse the following September.
