Partners in this initiative include the Fort Dobbs Alliance, a non-profit support group, local government and the business community. While Commander Hugh Waddell and his rangers were based at Fort Dobbs, they spent most of their time scouting the backcountry to protect frontier colonists. During periods of extreme danger, the colonists abandoned their homes and camped near the fort. The night of February 27, 1760, a Cherokee raiding party made the only direct attack ever attempted against Fort Dobbs. In 1761, 2,300 British regulars and provincials soundly defeated the Cherokee and the western frontier was pushed nearly 50 miles west of the fort. The signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1763 ended the French and Indian War and gave Great Britain undisputed control over North America. The following year, the colonial assembly decided to dismantle Fort Dobbs, as it was no longer useful. The garrison was dismissed and supplies were removed. Over time, the buildings fell into ruin and disappeared, leaving only ground impressions.
