21st century science 21st century science is a major project to re-develop the GCSE science curriculum in the UK. The new curriculum aims to give all 14-16 year old students the chance to develop a scientific literacy that will enable them to participate in a modern democratic society where science and technology play a key role. The project is spearheaded by two collaborative teams, one based at the Nuffield Curriculum Centre and the other at the University of York's Science Education Group. The curriculum has been divided into three courses which are currently being run as a pilot study involving 80 schools that commenced in September 2003. The Web Site, hosted by the Nuffield Curriculum Centre, covers the curricula's components, the project and its teams as well as an FAQ section and current news. Science - Study and teaching (Secondary) Great Britain British Council's Science Works The British Council's science sector aims to demonstrate Britain's vitality and excellence in the fields of science, engineering and the environment, and to promote collaborative links between British and overseas research partners in these fields. OST sought advice from the BA (report published November 2002) on a process by which it could receive information and advice on science commmunication activities and policy across the UK, so that it could provide comprehensive and better informed advice to the Government on their coverage and effectiveness. The consultation document includes an overview and a summary of actions proposed by OST. The questionnaire for gathering public perceptions is available as a Word or pdf document, the latter requiring adobe acrobat.

86. Sino-British Joint Declaration
The government of the United Kingdom of great britain and Northern Ireland and the government of the People s Republic of China have reviewed with satisfaction
http://www.info.gov.hk/trans/jd/jd2.htm
The Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the Government of the People's Republic of China have reviewed with satisfaction the friendly relations existing between the two Governments and peoples in recent years and agreed that a proper negotiated settlement of the question of Hong Kong, which is left over from the past, is conducive to the maintenance of the prosperity and stability of Hong Kong and to the further strengthening and development of the relations between the two countries on a new basis. To this end, they have, after talks between the delegations of the two Governments, agreed to declare as follows: The Government of the People's Republic of China declares that to recover the Hong Kong area (including Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories, hereinafter referred to as Hong Kong) is the common aspiration of the entire Chinese people, and that it has decided to resume the exercise of sovereignty over Hong Kong with effect from 1 July 1997. The Government of the United Kingdom declares that it will restore Hong Kong to the People's Republic of China with effect from 1 July 1997.

An Outline of American History (1994)
Chapter Four
Louisiana and Britain (11/13)
Previous Page Next Page One of Jefferson's acts doubled the area of the country. At the end of the Seven Years' War, France had ceded to Spain the territory west of the Mississippi River, with the port of New Orleans near its mouth a port indispensable for the shipment of American products from the Ohio and Mississippi valleys. Shortly after Jefferson became president, Napoleon forced a weak Spanish government to cede the great tract called Louisiana back to France. The move filled Americans with apprehension and indignation. Napoleon's plans for a huge colonial empire just west of the United States threatened the trading rights and the safety of all American interior settlements. Jefferson asserted that if France took possession of Louisiana, "from that moment we must marry ourselves to the British fleet and nation." Napoleon, knowing that another war with Great Britain was impending, resolved to fill his treasury and put Louisiana beyond the reach of the British by selling it to the United States. This put Jefferson in a constitutional quandary: the Constitution gave no office the power to purchase territory. At first Jefferson wanted to amend the Constitution, but his advisers told him that delay might lead Napoleon to change his mind and that the power to purchase territory was inherent in the power to make treaties. Jefferson relented, saying that "the good sense of our country will correct the evil of loose construction when it shall produce ill effects."
