Extension Entomologist Grasshoppers are among the most widespread and damaging pests in Texas. Approximately 150 species of grasshoppers are known to exist in the state; however, the following five species cause 90 percent of the damage to crops, gardens, trees and shrubs: Differential grasshopper, Melanoplus differentalis . Adults are 1 1/8 to 1 3/4 inches long. Black chevron markings on the hind femur help identify this grasshopper. Black individuals may occur. Moving in from weedy borders, they are very destructive in cultivated crops. They are seldom found in grassland. Red-legged grasshopper, Melanoplus femurrubrum . Adults are 7/8 to 1 1/4 inches long. The hind tibia are red. They are especially damaging to alfalfa and other legumes, but can be an important pest in other crops. They are of very little importance in grassland. Migratory grasshopper

How to identify crickets and grasshoppers
Interestingly, these two insects, crickets and grasshoppers, are both found in the Orthoptera order of insects even though they are from different families.
bodyOffer(25786) To observe some of the different species of grasshoppers and crickets one should find a field that is lush in vegetation during the early morning hours or around dusk. Remain perfectly still and listen for the different chirps or trills of these insects. Very often when one begins the chorus others will follow until the sound reaches an amazing crescendo. If you follow the different sounds to their source you will find one or both of these insects as they engage in calling to their mates. The crickets you find making this noise will be males but the grasshoppers will be females. While crickets rarely measure over two inches in length, some species of grasshoppers will grow to the incredible length of around five inches. As you observe these two insects you will notice that each makes a distinctly different sound. The mating song of the cricket is made as the insect presses a kind of scraper, which is located on its front wings, against tiny teeth like appendages that is found on the opposite front wing and moves it back and forth. A grasshoppers mating music is made when the insect creates a kind of friction by pressing its somewhat spiky hind legs or tough front wings against other parts of its body and moving them back and forth. Even though both insects use their song to attract receptive mates, this sound is used for other reasons as well. With each, their song will change when they are attempting to defend their territory or simply calling to locate others of their species. But since both the cricket and grasshopper are known to mate in the early months of fall, the majority of their chorus during this time will be part of their courting ritual. Once a receptive mate has been found the females of both insects will look for an area to deposit her eggs.

Story Tools YOUR E-MAIL ALERTS Sudan or Create your own Manage alerts What is this? KHARTOUM, Sudan (Reuters) Eleven people died and thousands were taken to hospital with breathing difficulties after a swarm of grasshoppers invaded a town in central Sudan, the government-owned Al-Anbaa newspaper reported on Saturday. The paper cited health authorities in Wad Medani, capital of the central al-Jezira state, as saying an epidemic of what they considered to be asthma had afflicted 1,685 people since October 22, all of whom had since been cured. The authorities also said 11 people had died from the breathing difficulties. "The appearance of the epidemic is linked to the unprecedented increase in the grasshopper insects," the daily quoted the health authorities as saying. Resident Joseph Mogum in Wad Medani, about 110 miles (176 km) southeast of the capital Khartoum, said the grasshoppers gave off a strong smell which caused breathing problems. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation said on October 21 that swarms of locusts were threatening crops in northeastern Sudan, Mauritania and northern Niger, but it was not clear if it was the same species that was affecting Wad Medani in central Sudan.

Grasshoppers
Description:
Many species. Adults and nymphs: Brown, gray, black, or yellow. Strong hindlegs. Up to 2 inches long. Most grasshoppers are strong flyers.
Common host plant(s):
Lettuce, potato, beans and corn.
Damage:
Feed on any available vegetation. When abundant, they may destroy complete plantings of such crops as lettuce and potato.
Distribution:
Throughout United States. They are especially troublesome in central and northwestern states.
Lifecyle:
Female grasshoppers lay eggs in sodded areas towards the end of summer. Nymphs emerge from these overwintering eggs near the beginning of summer and begin feeding on young plants. As the grasshopper nymphs mature, they migrate to other areas and feed on a large variety of plants. Nymphs mature into adults in about 1 1/2 to 2 months. Adults continue feeding until killed by cold temperatures.
Cultural Control
Avoid planting gardens next to hay fields and ditch banks with high grasshopper populations. Seedlings may be protected by covering them with netting or cheescloth. Removal of debris and turning of the soil with help expose the eggs to predators and the weather.
Organic/Biological Control:
Birds such as crows, cat birds, bluebirds, mockingbirds, and sparrows are natural predators of grasshoppers. Spiders may also eat them.

Introduction
The family Pneumoridae is a group of 17 species distributed along the coast of southern Africa, but also extending northwards into Tanzania and Uganda ( map ). Most species occur in transitional habitat comprising mosaics of bush and grassland, with the rest in forests or desert. All species are highly cryptic in appearance and behavior, being color matched to their particular food plant and rarely noticed except at night when the loud mate location call of the male may be heard 2 km away. There are large differences in the morphology and behavior of adult males and females. Only adult males are capable of flight and may be attracted to light, but when approached during the day generally do not fly. In several species males can either develop an inflated abdomen or mate as a flightless alternative morph without the anatomy and behavior for sexual signaling (Alexander and van Staaden, 1989). Threatened females and nymphs will drop to the ground and feign death (thanatosis), although nymphs may also jump. The family is significant because individuals possess two forms of

Squid Bat Fly ... Wings A grasshopper is an insect that lives in and feeds on grass and other plants. Using huge hind legs, the grasshopper makes gigantic leaps into the air. After its spring-assisted takeoff, it can unfurl its two pairs of wings and continue flying with them. Like all insects, the grasshopper has six legs. The two rear legs are specialized and strengthened for jumping, while the front two pairs are used only for walking on the ground. The grasshopper's head has two antennae that are able to feel and smell what is nearby. It also has two compound eyes that are made up of hundreds of individual eyelets. Each eyelet, called an ommatidium, has its own lens and light-sensitive cells, and together they provide an overall picture of a wide area surrounding the grasshopper. The mouthparts are a set of movable jaws that let the grasshopper chomp its way through grass blades.

March 1998. Volume 11, Issue #1.
by Charles Griffith, M.S. Retired Clinical Psychologist; Private Consultant. Ozark, Arkansas 72949-8810 Editor's note: The following was sent to us as a Letter to the Editor. We thought many of you would be interested in Mr. Griffith's insights and so are including his entire communication unedited.
Having been an edible wild plant enthusiast for years, my wife and I taught classes on the subject at both Yellowstone Park where we worked for three summers in the mid-eighties and in Colorado. Our most recent classes (three successive summers) have been under the auspices of the Colorado Mountain College Rendezvous (a re-enactment of the trappers' rendezvous that were held in the Rocky Mountains between 1810 and ] 840). These events are held each summer in August, usually in one of the National Forests near Fairplay, Colorado, and sponsored by the Colorado Black Powder Association.
Often students want to know if one can survive on wild edible plants alone in an emergency situation. Since I have never attempted a survival experiment, I have not been able to definitively answer that question, but the more I think about the question the more inclined I am to believe that more protein and fat would need to be a part of a survival diet and thus plants alone would probably not be enoughespecially in the Rocky Mountain west where even Euell Gibbons found meager pickings. Plants might sustain someone in the short run a few days or a week or two at most, but it seems that some harvest from the animal kingdom would eventually have to be a part of the survival diet mix unless lots of nuts were available (sorry about that, vegetarians).
