3D Graphics Hardware: Where We Have Been, Where We Are Now, and Where We Are Going
Dan Baum
Silicon Graphics Computer Systems What can we expect to see in 3D graphics hardware in the coming years? What markets will drive next generation designs? Where will PC graphics be in the year 2000? These questions are frequently debated by users, application vendors and manufacturers of 3D graphics hardware. In this article, I will offer some views and opinions on these and related questions. First, I will briefly review a bit of the history of hardware accelerated graphics. Next, I will give an overview of the current state of graphics hardware. Finally, I will discuss what directions graphics hardware will be going in the future.
History
The IRIS 1400 was an example of what is called a first generation graphics system. The generation refers to the targeted feature set for which the system runs at full performance. In the case of the IRIS 1400, this was flat-shaded polygons. This system supported immediate mode graphics, and was the first interactive raster system used for applications such as CAD and scientific visualization. Second generation systems raised the realism level by rendering polygons that were Gouraud-shaded, Phong-lit and z-buffered. Additionally, raw transformation and scan-conversion performance jumped considerably. The first example of a second generation system was the Hewlett-Packard SRX, followed by the Silicon Graphics GT, which was the first system to break the 100,000 polygon/second mark. The improved shading capabilities allowed these workstations to become tools for applications such as modeling, animation and molecular modeling.

Recommended Hardware and Software for Administrative Workstations
The following outlines the minimum recommended specifications for computer purchases for an administrative workstation that will be used within the NIU computing environment. Acquisition of equipment pursuant to these guidelines will ensure the ability to utilize the standard software in the NIU client-server environment. Additionally, maintaining consistency with these standards will allow ITS and other centralized support services to provide helpdesk, hardware, and software support. These are the minimum recommended standards and represent the best value for new acquisition of desktop computing technology as determined by the Enterprise Standards Committee. On a case by case basis, exceptional power users may require configurations beyond those stated here. However, when considering enhancements to the minimum configuration it would be prudent to remain consistent with the standards as outlined. In conjunction with the Enterprise Standards Committee, Enterprise Systems Support will revise these recommendations on a quarterly basis in order to provide current models. Your procurement process will be streamlined by remaining compliant with the standards as outlined.

Below are the parts that make up our dream computer. We'll note both the bare minimum for running today's software and also what we really feel you should buy to be happy. None of these picks is influenced by the manufacturers as most of this is stuff we've either bought for ourselves or will buy as we need new equipment. Where possible, we've provided links so that you can order the equipment. Since a computer is not just a box, but also a number of peripherals that all work together, we've also listed a number of other related products.
    The Computer
There are several decisions to make when buying a PC. The first is to choose which chip to buy. At today's prices, we wouldn't suggest anything less than a Pentium IV or Athlon XP.

If you truly want the best performance, you want Windows XP. Unlike the Windows 9x and Me series which is just an extension of 16-bit DOS, Windows XP is completely 32-bit. You will sacrifice compatibility with a very small number of programs, mainly games and low-level utilities, but you'll find that your graphics software will run much more smoothly. Almost all new computers offer you the choice of installing Windows XP. Go with it, you won't be sorry.

The Indy is a Unix workstation built by Silicon Graphics Incorporated of Mountain View, CA. Introduced in 1993, it uses the MIPS The Indy has been sold by several companies as an OEM (original equipment manufacturer) product. In Germany, the box is still blue, but the Indy is labeled Siemens/Nixdorf RW410. These are R4000 100 MHz, with all original SGI parts. In the US, Indys may have been sold with a Tandem label, and were black. Here is a picture of a Tandem badged Challenge S along with a picture of the label on the bottom of the unit. The Challenge S is very similar in design to the Indy, and uses many of the same parts, such as the CPU modules, power supply, drives, and RAM. The Challenge S uses a different chassis (no holes cut in the back for keyboard and mouse), and an Indy motherboard with chips unstuffed (missing), like the VINO video, audio, keyboard/mouse interface, etc.
