Displayed representation of a scene or an object along two axes of reference: height and width (x and y). 3D Graphics

Displayed representation of a scene or an object that appears to have three axes of reference: height, width, and depth (x, y, and z). 3D Pipeline

The process of 3D graphics can be divided into three-stages: tessellation, geometry, and rendering. In the tessellation stage, a described model of an object is created, and the object is then converted to a set of polygons. The geometry stage includes transformation, lighting, and setup. The rendering stage, which is critical for 3D image quality, creates a two dimensional display from the polygons created in the geometry stage. Alpha Blending

The real world is composed of transparent, translucent, and opaque objects. Alpha blending is a technique for adding transparency information for translucent objects. It is implemented by rendering polygons through a stipple mask whose on-off density is proportional to the transparency of the object. The resultant color of a pixel is a combination of the foreground and background color.

Computer Graphics:
Ideas and People from America's Universities Fuel a Multi-Billion-Dollar Industry
Edward R. McCracken
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
Silicon Graphics, Inc.
Overview
Advances in computer graphics have transformed how we use computers. Computer graphics has given us the "mouse" input device, "what-you-see-is-what-you-get" document preparation systems, the computer-aided design system used to create the Boeing 777, the ability to visualize molecular dynamics and other scientific phenomena, the animation used in educational software and the advertising and entertainment industries, and virtual reality systems whose applications range from architectural prototyping to surgical training to entertainment. Today, every user of a computer benefits from computer graphics, even in applications such as word processors, spreadsheets, databases, and project planners. Because of user-friendly graphical user interfaces, pre-schoolers now routinely use computers, a revolution undreamt of even a few years ago. While everyone is familiar with the mouse, multiple "windows" on computer screens, and stunningly realistic images of everything from animated logos in television advertisements to NASA animations of spacecraft flying past Saturn, few people realize that these innovations were spawned by federally sponsored university research. Without far-sighted support from agencies such as the Department of Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and the National Science Foundation, computer graphics and the multi-billion-dollar industry it makes possible would have developed much more slowly, and perhaps not predominantly in the U.S.

Computer Animation Offers Careers In Film

by Reginald Franklin
Animation has come a long way from Walt Disney's Steamboat Willie cartoon in the 1920's. With films such as Toy Story, Jurassic Park, and Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and television shows like Babylon 5, classic animation has been jumped to warp speed by one indispensable tool the computer. The computer has emerged as the one tool that can speed both the creative process of animating characters, as well as the time it takes to get a film or television project to the screen. California companies such as Industrial Light and Magic and Dream Works SKG, the film studio owned in part by director Steven Spielberg, have invested millions of dollars in computer hardware and software to be able to turn out amazing animated special effects in the film industry. They are also investing in another scarce commodity the computer animator. A computer is just a tool. Without a skilled artist at the mouse or drawing pad, nothing can be created. The training and skill needed to be a successful computer animator can be found in special programs at a growing list of colleges and universities, including the art program at Jackson State University in Jackson, Mississippi. Jackson State's program offers students an opportunity to study the fundamentals of computer animation. It also provides students with practical, hands-on experience with several different computer platforms. Jackson State's computer facilities range from Amiga-based graphics computers to a $2 million Silicon Graphics main frame and computer modeling laboratory the state-of-the-art in computer graphics and animation hardware! A special team works on several outside computer graphics and computational modeling projects. The Army High Performance Computing and Research Center, or AHPCRC, specializes in computer visualization and molecular modeling.

Language: English Type: White Paper Format: PDF Length: 9 Page(s) Abstract: The emergence and sustained advancement of low-cost, high-volume graphics hardware has been the driving force in interactive computer graphics for several years. These systems derive their price/performance advantage from volume deployment and therefore must focus on standard needs rather than specific niche requirements. However, the increasing power of these systems, combined with their generality, suggest that they might be programmed to implement traditional functions of purpose-built Image Generators. This paper explores the techniques needed to use such hardware to implement features such as multi-layered fog, light points, antialiasing, steerable light lobes, large area terrain, global texture, rotor wash, and, multispectral sensor simulation. This paper presents the results of the authors' investigations into advanced visual fidelity on low-cost visual systems and provides a guide to other researchers and developers concerned about widely deployable image generation.

THE DEMOTIC DICTIONARY PROJECT
COMPUTERS, GRAPHICS, AND PAPYROLOGY
By Janet H. Johnson, Professor The Oriental Institute The University of Chicago
(This article originally appeared in Proceedings of the 20th International Congress of Papyrologists Museum Tusculanum, Copenhagen 1994, pp. 618-620, and is made available electronically with the permission of the editor.
The spread of affordable, "user friendly," sophisticated personal computers has already affected how scholars in many disciplines work. Because of the extreme difficulty scholars have in reading demotic script, demotic studies have lagged and many basic research tools are lacking. When I reactivated the demotic dictionary project which had come to Chicago from the great German Egyptologist Wilhelm Spiegelberg via Spiegelberg's student William Edgerton and on which my own teachers, George Hughes and Charles Nims, had worked as young scholars, we began by collecting all the vocabulary from texts published between 1955 (the year after Erichsen's Glossar was published) and 1979, a 25-year period which saw the publication of major collections of religious, "scientific," and literary texts as well as economic and legal documents. The first Apple Macintosh computer appeared just as we were preparing to write entries and this machine immediately appealed to us because of its graphic orientation. The Macintosh's "what you see is what you get" coordination between screen and printer allowed us to see and control our formatting directly on screen and made it easy to use various diacritics and non-Latin fonts.

COMPUTER GAMING
Vol.32 No.2 May 1998 ACM SIGGRAPH
Game Graphics During the 8-bit Computer Era
Steven Collins
Trinity College Dublin The technologies being employed in current games have advanced to the point where computer game companies are now leaders in graphics research. Indeed, the requirement for realistic real-time graphics has arguably driven graphics research in areas such as image-based rendering and visibility processing. This article will explore the 8-bit computer industry (from about 1982 to 1990) and in particular the graphics architectures, algorithms and techniques being employed at that time in computer games. Rather than attempt a complete review of all the machines available at the time, I'll concentrate on what I know best: the Commodore 64, which was undoubtedly the most successful of the 8-bit machines, but will also have a brief look at the Atari 400/800 and Sinclair Spectrum for comparison. In later sections, I'll outline the architecture of the 64's graphics subsystem (and compare it with some of its main rivals), list some of the graphical techniques used in different genres of games and will also explore some of the more esoteric effects that could be squeezed from the 64 by exploiting quirks of its video chip. The golden era of the 8-bit computer game began around 1982 and continued until about 1990. Following on from the success of hobbyist computer kits (like the Sinclair ZX-80), a number of computer companies simultaneously released a range of powerful, preassembled home computers, epitomized by the Commodore 64, the Sinclair Spectrum and the Atari 400/800 (which I will simply refer to as the Atari 800 or just Atari). In fact, there were many more contenders, and a summary of these is given in Table 1.
