Newsletter Strategy Session Return to home page Definition: What's a client newsletter? Article Choosing an e-Newsletter Format
You have five options for electronic publishing, from plain text to PDF By David M. Freedman and David J. Friedman
P roducing an electronic newsletter is cheap and fast because there is no printer or postage involved. It’s possible to write, format, and distribute an e-newsletter all in one day or maybe an hour making it ideal for urgent messages. E-newsletters are distributed by e-mail, through a website, or both. Not only do you have to choose between those three distribution options, but you must also decide what format or combination of formats you will use. The following chart can help you make that decision. Below the chart we will describe in greater detail each format option, its advantages and disadvantages, and what kinds of software the newsletter readers need to view the publication. Newsletter format Software required Main advantages Disadvantages Plain text e-mail Any e-mail software Cannot include color, vary fonts, or use basic formatting such as bold, italic, tables, bullets, etc.

Create Complex Images for Small Devices
The .NET Compact Framework lets you use a time-honored technique for composing graphics with transparent areas.
by Bill Wagner August 2003 Issue Technology Toolbox: C#, .NET Compact Framework Q.
I wrote a mapping engine in .NET for the desktop that handles the conversion of longitude/latitude to Cartesian real-world coordinates easily, then maps them to the device. GDI+ features let you define holes in polygons easily, and we used the "region" approach. However, this construct doesn't exist in the Compact Framework. We manage the situation now by ordering our polygons. We draw the large ones first, then the small ones. This works, graphically, assuming we honor topology (polygons' edges never intersect). We draw sand traps over the tops of the larger rough polygons, which is probably faster than drawing the hole. However, we'll need to display background aerial imagery through the hole in a polygon eventually. Must I use bitblt operations to accomplish this task? A.

Note - Not all Examples are currently available - they will hopefully be available soon!
Please make sure you are on campus if you are going to view examples as the files are quite large! So you've got your e-mail account all setup and you're receiving e-mail! But what exactly are the best ways to manage your e-mail account and make it work efficiently for you? The following 12 tips can help!
Tip 1 : Use Folders to distribute your e-mail
While this may be obvious to some people, you would be suprised how many people do not follow this advice! If your inbox has hundreds of e-mail messages sitting in it, or you never seem to be able to find the e-mails that you want without looking for 10 minutes, then you may not be using folders effectively. When defining folder names, try to think in broad terms. Don't base folder names on people, try to focus on committees, groups, and projects.

Design Considerations

Introduction
Strategic Considerations Content Considerations Web Server and Internet Access Considerations ... Planning For The Future Web site design includes:
  • Designing the flow of information and the organization of individual pages. This will largely depend upon the content and services you are offering, how they work together and how you expect your audience will use them. Think it through carefully so that you don't lose the user or make it too difficult to use and navigate your Web site.
  • The optional inclusion of special information management or data manipulation facilities. For example, if you want to build a directory of dog breeders in a given region, someone will likely have to design and script the database for it. Similarly, you may want to incorporate an automatic emailing or guest registration function.
  • Traditional graphic design and illustrations for the pages so that your site is appealing and easy to use. This will require some knowledge of computer graphics development, file types and sizes especially as they relate to performance and usability, and some understanding of the particular nature of designing for strengths and weaknesses of onscreen media and Web browsers.
  • HTML and its handling by different Web browsers present unique challenges to the Web site designer. Among the most important is that some browsers understand newer or more sophisticated versions of HTML code than others. All browsers, for example, understand that a certain piece of text is tagged as a title and therefore should look different than text in a body paragraph. Some browsers use versions of HTML that let you specify that the title should be exactly 18 point type. A user with another, less powerful browser that does not support this specification, however, will see the title in the closest approximation to 18 point type his or her browser can deliver. Some browsers can handle online forms or different kinds of backgrounds, while others cannot. Text browsers, such as Lynx, do not display graphics at all.

BUSINESS CARDS The functions of a business card are to identify the institution and the individual representing it and to provide an easy way to contact that person. Printed business cards for University and Intercollegiate Athletic personnel are available through the Office of Publications and Graphic Design. The cards are 3.5" X 2" bearing either the one-color or two-color University logo or the two-color treatment for Intercollegiate Athletics. The Office of Publication and Graphic Design can provide an Adobe Acrobat PDF file from which business cards bearing a black University logo can be printed by laser or inkjet printers onto blank perforated forms. GENERAL GUIDELINES To ensure graphic integrity, authorized vendors and organizations who need to reproduce the official logo and other official graphics should obtain mechanical or digital source material from the Office of Publications and Graphic Design rather than attempt to recreate graphic material. Digitally rendered images should not be disproportionately scaled. Stretching digital graphics horizontally or vertically in a computer application results in distortion that denigrates the proportions of the design. Scale graphics proportionately by locking the aspect ratio or holding down the shift key while dragging a corner resize handle. Be aware that scaling graphics can affect the resulting resolution. Graphic elements should always contain enough resolution to image without discernable pixels (the square mosaic-like tiles which make up digital images) on the output device (printer or monitor).

DWR Reprographics has a color copier. The composing Unit creates master copies forreproduction or Business Image, Symbols Industry, and Personal graphics.
    http://rubicon.water.ca.gov/guidelines.fdr/pandg.html
    Printing and Graphics
This section covers some of the mechanical aspects of producing a DWR publication:
    • Printing and types of bindings
    • Illustrations: graphs, charts, maps, and photographs
    • Use of colored inks (Note: As of November 1995, there are no color restrictions for Department of General Services printers. This means that DWR Reprographics, the Office of State Printing, and any other General Services printers can now do 4-color printing.)
    • Color xerography
    Printing
Most DWR printing is done by the Reprographics Unit, Room 751 in the Resources Building. When Reprographics cannot handle a job because of workload or special needssuch as color photographs, a large printing run, or wraparound bindingit farms out the job to a General Services printer, the Office of State Printing, or an outside vendor. Reprographics will provide estimates of printing costs on request and print up to 5,000 copies of a report, with no limit on the number of pages. Reproduction Requests Printing jobs are submitted on the Request for Reproduction (Standard Form 3597), which must be completely and accurately filled out before a request can be carried out. The following information must be included:
    • Work Authority and unit numbers.

    55. Raster3D Package For Photorealistic Molecular Graphics
colour triple into a Raster3D color specification it composing figures in other programsSuppose you are working in some interactive graphics program, FRODO
    http://khnopff.ulb.ac.be/documents/raster3d/raster3d.html
SYNOPSIS The Raster3D molecular graphics package consists of a core program render and a number of ancillary programs ( balls ribbon rods ) which produce input files for rendering from Brookhaven PDB files of atomic coordinates. Raster3D can also render images composed using version 1.4 of Molscript [Per Kraulis (1991) J. Appl. Cryst. 24, 946-950]. Raster3D uses a fast Z-buffer algorithm to produce high quality pixel images featuring two light sources, specular highlighting, Phong shaded surfaces, and shadowing. Output is in the form of a pixel image with 24 bits of color information per pixel. Raster3D does not depend on graphics hardware for operation. Four image output formats are supported: AVS, TIFF, SGI libimage, and a private format which is backwards-compatible with earlier versions of Raster3D. To actually view or manipulate the images produced, you must also have installed an image viewing package (e.g. John Cristy's ImageMagick or the SGI libimage utilities). Although the rendering program is not specific to molecular graphics, Raster3D is not intended as a general purpose ray-tracing program. Ancillary programs are provided only for the generation of object descriptions based on atomic coordinates stored in Brookhaven PDB format. Raster3D Version 2.1 supports rendering of five object types: spheres, triangles, planes, smooth-ended cylinders, and round-ended cylinders. New in version 2.1 is support for two additional "object types" which are really modifiers for characteristic properties of existing objects. One of these allows specification of explicit surface normals at triangle vertices; the other allows specification of surface reflectance properties specific to individual objects. Neither of these features is used by the current version of the auxilliary programs distributed with Raster3D, but their inclusion may encourage use of the Raster3D rendering program in conjunction with other code which depends on these capabilities. The provision for explicit surface normals, for example, should allow the use of Raster3D to render general molecular surfaces.

If you want to get graphics into a Web page or multimedia presentation, you either have to
    • create them in some kind of graphics application by drawing or painting them right there in the application, or
    • bring them into the application from a digital camera or scanner, and then edit and save them in a form suitable for your medium.
Many software applications offer a variety of features for creating and editing pictures on the computer. Even multimedia authoring and word processing programs include some simple features for drawing on the computer.

Background Color The background color of your page can be just about any color you want. It can be midnight black or forest green, depending on your taste. You will create with great a yellow background. "So," you may be thinking, "which colors can I use? If I type: "will the browser know I'm looking for a grayish white?" The short answer is: No. Only a limited number of colors can be specified by name (snowslush isn't one of them), and different browsers recognize different sets of colors. So if you want to be precise about your background , you'll want to replace the name of the color, with a hexadecimal code . So your HTML would look something like this: Notice all those "f"s in the code? Well, that's how one says "white" in hexadecimal. The "ffffff" represents the RGB value of white, translated into hexadecimal. Any color that can be displayed on a monitor can be described by its RGB value - its relative amounts of red, green, and blue (each of which is expressed as a two-digit number, such as 51 or 14 or 00). Now, if you don't want to bother with calculating those numbers, you can just go color shopping:

The Internet in one form or another has been around for more than thirty years. Yet it's only in the past few years that the Internet's popularity has exploded and continues to explode. One big reason for the sudden explosion in the Internet's popularity is the Internet's move from a text only medium to a very graphics oriented medium. Engaging graphics is the magic that attracts so many people to the Internet and Web surfing. Consider how boring a newspaper or magazine with no pictures or terrible pictures is. Newspapers, magazines, and other publications with engaging color graphics are more interesting than publications with black and white (monochrome) pictures. In 1990, the developers of the World Wide Web (WWW) at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland started letting other scientific Internet users know they had developed the WWW document format. Among other things, the then new WWW format allowed graphics to be used within documents transmitted over the Internet regardless of the type of graphics capable computer used, by using a graphics capable WWW browser.
