Appointed brigadier general by President Lincoln early in the Civil War, Grant captured Forts Donelson and Henry in February 1862. After further successes he was named commander of the Union army, which he led to victory. He became the 18th president of the United States in 1869.

A five page paper contrasting the view of slavery described in Winston Churchill's 'The Great Democracies' (Volume Four of 'A History of the English-Speaking Peoples') with Austin Steward's slave narrative 'Twenty Two Years a Slave, and Forty Years a Freeman.' The paper points out that Churchill's view of the Civil War was colored by the fact that he considered the African mentality barbaric and the slaves' existence tolerable a fact contradicted by Steward's first-hand account. Ulysses S. Grant : Memoirs and Selected Letters : Personal Memoirs of U.S. Grant / Selected Letters, 1839-1865 (Library of America) > Customer Review #1: US Grantin his own words

The story of Ulysses Simpson Grant is a tale about a man who rises from obscurity to become one of the most important men of the nineteenth century. Many men saw Grant, as general-in-chief of the Union armies during the late Civil War, as the savior of the nation. He was elected to two terms as President, and enjoyed such immense popularity that he was lavished with praise and gifts around the globe when he traveled the world. But Grants origins were humble. He was the son of a tanner. As a young man he failed at nearly everything he did, and had a reputation, while stationed with the army in California, of being a drunk. Grant seemed the antithesis of greatness; yet somehow he rose to become one of the most prominent men in the United States during the Civil War.

[Editor's Notes: US Grant was the fourth 19th century president to visit Portsmouth after James Monroe James K Polk and NH-born Franklin Pierce . After the Civil War, locals were sharply divided on the presidency of Ulysses S Grant (1822-1885). Was the 18th president a drunken dullard or a capable Reconstructionist leader? That depends on which Portsmouth newspaper one read when Grant breezed through town in a luxurious Pullman car with 200 members of his entourage. A Civil War hero, General Grant had almost been with Lincoln that fateful night at Ford's Theater . Instead he went on to become a two-term president, defeating NH notable Horace Greeley in his second term. Grant's famous tomb in New York City is the largest mausoleum in the country and, as the links below show, Grant still has a large devout following among history buffs. Grant's latest fictional incarnation was played by actor Kevin Kline in the movie version of "Wild, Wild, West." The film, like most of Grant's presidency, was not a hit with most critics. JDR] As is still often the case, presidential visits to Portsmouth, NH are just "whistle stops" as the chief executive moves on into Maine from the nation's capital. President George Bush used Portsmouth's military airfield as his own landing spot for regular visits to nearby Kennebunkport, Maine. And so it was back in 1871 when President Ulysses S. Grant zipped through.

He was an author of unusual ability and his Memoirs are widely regarded as one of the great books written in the English language. He was also a complex individual with uncommon virtues. Grant was the Civil War supreme commander who rode his war-hero status to the White House and into one of the rockiest two-term presidencies ever. Grant's early life showed little indication that the world would ever hear of him. An Ohio tanner's son, Ulysses was small, sensitive, and quiet. The other children mistook his shyness for stupidity, nicknaming him "Useless." An outstanding horseman, Grant had an otherwise undistinguished career at West Point. After graduating, he was put in command of infantry divisions but was forced to resign for insubordination to his superiors. After leaving the Army in disgrace, he failed at half a dozen jobs in as many years. Through these difficult times, his wife, Julia Dent Grant, stuck by him, seeing qualities in Grant that the rest of the world did not. Julia knew that he would one day make something of himself.

Ulysses Grant has never been obvious material for a biography because he behaved too well. Writing about his virtues can quickly turn into homilies about what a gentleman he was. Some care to concentrate their energies into proving he was a butcher, a drunkard or a racist. Let's examine the third charge, specifically that U.S. Grant was an anti-Semite.
    The order is
Even before General Orders 11, Grant had occasionally expressed anti-Semitic sentiments in his correspondence. In November, he had written to General Hurlbut in Jackson, "The Israelites especially should be kept out." The next day he wrote General Webster a dispatch which stated, "Give orders to all the conductors on the road that no Jews are to be permitted to travel on the railroad south from any point... they are such an intolerable nuisance that the department must be purged of them." This communication is equally, if not more offensive than General Orders No. 11.

The man we know as Ulysses S. Grant was actually named Hiram Ulysses Grant. As a boy he was known as "Lyss". Thomas Hamer, the Congrssman who appointed Grant to West Point, forgot all about Hiram. Remembering that Grant's mother's maiden name was Simpson and thinking that was Lyss Grant's middle name, he filled out the application in the name of "Ulysses S. Grant".
When Grant arrived at West Point and discovered that the Academy had him registered under the wrong name, he tried to get the error corrected. He was told that it didn't matter what he or his parents thought his name was, the official government application said his name was "Ulysses S." and that application could not be changed.
If Hiram U. Grant wanted to attend West Point, he would have to change his name. Biography:
Late in the administration of Andrew Johnson, Gen. Ulysses S. Grant quarreled with the President and aligned himself with the Radical Republicans. He was, as the symbol of Union victory during the Civil War, their logical candidate for President in 1868. When he was elected, the American people hoped for an end to turmoil. Grant provided neither vigor nor reform. Looking to Congress for direction, he seemed bewildered. One visitor to the White House noted "a puzzled pathos, as of a man with a problem before him of which he does not understand the terms."
