Introduction
These notes are a miscellany of grammatical rules and explanations, comments on style , and suggestions on usage I put together for my classes. Nothing here is carved in stone, and many comments are matters of personal preference . Anyone who can resist turning my own preferences into dogma is welcome to use this HTML edition. Comments are always welcome. I should be clear up front: I'm not a linguist, nor a scholar of the history of the language. Linguists are wary of " prescriptive
Why, then, have I spent so much time on a prescriptive and fairly traditional usage guide? Because these notes may be useful in making your writing clearer and more effective . I'm not out to make definitive statements about what's right and what's wrong , and Lord knows I wouldn't be qualified even if I tried. I can, however, make suggestions on things that are likely to

A sentence should contain no unnecessary words, a paragraph no unnecessary sentences for the same reason that a drawing should have no unnecessary lines and a machine no unnecessary parts. This requires not that the writer make all his sentences short, or that he avoid all detail and treat his subjects only in outline, but that every word tell."

This is the part of grammar that the GMAT concentrates on. Faulty usage. One entersthis world with no responsibilities. As a general rule, a modifier
    http://www.majon.com/testprep/strat-gmatg.html
The field of grammar is huge and complextomes have been written on the subject. This complexity should be no surprise since grammar deals with the process of communication.
GMAT grammar tests only a small part of standard written English. Grammar can be divided into two parts: Mechanics and Usage.
Mechanics concerns punctuation, capitalization, etc. It is not tested on the GMAT nearly as often as is usage. So don't spend too much time worrying whether the comma is in the right place or whether a particular word should be capitalized.
Usage concerns how we choose our words and how we express our thoughts: in other words, are the connections between the words in a sentence logically sound, and are they expressed in a way that conforms to standard idiom? This is the part of grammar that the GMAT concentrates on. Six major categories of usage are tested:
    Pronoun Errors
    Subject-Verb Agreement
    Misplaced Modifiers
    Faulty Parallelism
    Faulty Verb Tense
    Faulty Idiom PRONOUN ERRORS
A pronoun is a word that stands for a noun, known as the antecedent of the pronoun. The key point for the use of pronouns is this: pronouns must agree with their antecedents in both number (singular or plural) and person (first, second, or third).
Example: Steve has yet to receive his degree.

    Question
    Dear Ted,
Happy New Year! I read of two sentences: A year begins at spring. A day begins at moring. Are they right? I look up the English dictionartries, but I find no schu a usage. Please take the time to tell me. Thank you very much ! Sincerely, Walden Answer Dear Walden: Yes, both sentences are correct. A year begins at spring. In this sentence, the writer is saying that the springtime actually starts the year, which I find questionable, but, if it's his opinion, he has the right to say it. The year actually begins in January, which is the middle of winter. A day begins at MORNING. [You left out the "n."] The time of morning begins each new day, followed by the afternoon and then the evening or night.
