Grammar teaching approaches

Teaching grammar is an important part of language teaching. There are different ways of apporoaching it - but which ways do you find most effective for you and your students? We received this question:. Belinda, China
"I'm a TEFL teacher in a senior high school. The biggest problem for me right now is grammar teaching. Traditionally, we use deductive approach to teach grammar, for it is easy to control and efficient, but it is quite boring both to teachers and students. Inductive approach, on the other hand, is rather demanding and rewarding, but it is too time-consuming. Could you tell me how to solve this contradiction?" A deductive approach is one where the teacher directly presents the rule to the students. An inductive approach is where the teacher encourages the students to work out the rule for themselves through relevant examples.

Hi everybody! Well I really need your help! I was wondering what would be the best way to teach grammar! Most teachers say that we should present the structure at first, but others say that it is better to use an inductive approach .
What do you think?
Thanks . Your answers Mahesh Chandak, India I take it your main aim is to teach spoken english. For, if you are teaching grammar for the sake of grammar, the inductive approach won't help, because it won't tell the students the why's. For spoken English, the less of grammar that is used, the better it it for the students. Grammar becomes more of a hindrance than a help so far as spoken English is concerned. I have often seen students fumbling for words because every sentence they speak is preceded by a mental check-up of the grammar of the sentence. Language should come fluently. Grammar should follow only after the student has gained fluency. After all, don't 4-5 year old kids in English-speaking countries like US, Canada and UK speak near-perfect English when they barely know the letters of the alphabet, let alone any grammar? So let's not confuse students with grammar. Grammar will make sense once they learn to speak and write proper english through speaking, hearing and reading.

Grammar
Notre Dame Cathedral A young woman gestures to a class of nineteen attentive boys in the earliest known picture of Grammar personified as a teacher. More than a thousand years old, she abides in the ink lines of a drawing dated to the beginning of the tenth century. Later depictions of Grammar, from the eleventh to the eighteenth century, express different visions of this member of the curriculum. Grammar tough, Grammar tender; she may threaten, she may strike; she may foster learning through the gentlest of pedagogies. A variety of symbolic devices are hers. Grammar's habitat is not limited to classrooms or interior spaces, although she is usually found not far from architecture, when her environment can be discerned at all. But if Grammar is revealed in no single persona or setting, how diverse are her configurations? Here we see Grammatica; there, a male Grammaticus. Given that gender is a basic fact of Latin grammar as well as of its teachers or exponents, what part has it to play in visualizations of the subject? Still more generally, what bearing have these questions on the history of curriculum and instruction? The answers that follow will be seen to comprise an essay gathering Grammar imagery across nine centuries, delineating a typology, and exploring the significance of the iconic forms that Grammar has assumed.

The authors look at grammar from a humanist perspective and the student is seen as someone who uses grammar to make meaning, not as a mere passive learner of grammar. The activities are fun and motivating but focused and for Chinese students it would be well to make this focus explicit. I find that a number of the activities can be adapted to practice different grammar points and I can integrate the activities into my courses in a farly seamless way. ASHA: Pragmatic Language Tips

Grammar is often misunderstood in the language teaching field. The misconception lies in the view that grammar is a collection of arbitrary rules about static structures in the language. Further questionable claims are that the structures do not have to be taught, learners will acquire them on their own, or if the structures are taught, the lessons that ensue will be boring. Consequently, communicative and proficiency-based teaching approaches sometimes unduly limit grammar instruction. Of the many claims about grammar that deserve to be called myths, this digest will challenge ten.
1. Grammar is acquired naturally; it need not be taught. It is true that some learners acquire second language grammar naturally without instruction. For example, there are immigrants to the United States who acquire proficiency in English on their own. This is especially true of young immigrants. However, this is not true for all learners. Among the same immigrant groups are learners who may achieve a degree of proficiency, but whose English is far from accurate. A more important question may be whether it is possible with instruction to help learners who cannot achieve accuracy in English on their own.

In Search of an Effective Grammar Teaching Model
by Tsai-Yu Chen

Language teachers urgently need a grammar teaching model built upon theoretical insights and research findings from second language acquisition. This model must be compatible with a communicative framework that stresses meaningful (negotiated) interaction resulting from the learners' comprehension of classroom input. It should integrate explicit grammar instruction (EGI) with communicative language teaching (CLT). I borrow the term explicit grammar instruction, from Terrell (l991) to refer to those instructional strategies employed to raise learners' conscious awareness of the form or structure of the target language. In the following pages, I shall investigate how EGI and CLT can supplement each other to provide a new perspective for teaching grammar.
Justification of EGI
Indeed, some studies (for a full review see Canale and Swain, 1988), reporting that grammatical competence is not a good predictor for communicative competence, overestimate the role of unconscious learning. On the contrary, a thorough search of the literature reveals that a variety of research findings favors conscious grammar learning/teaching. Some convincing research findings are worth mentioning here. Pienemman (1984, 1989) found that though psychological constraints exist on the teachability of language, EGI can make a difference. He found EGI effective when teaching grammatical features that are stage-appropriate. For example, a learner will succeed in mastering structural forms of stage x+3 only when the current state of the learner is at stage x+2. (see

EJ English Journal Nov96 Teaching Grammar in the Context of Writing Constance Weaver With such deep-seated beliefs, some parents and community members argue vociferously for teaching grammar as a systemformally, and not necessarily in conjunction with writing. They argue for grammar on what, for them, are moral and religious grounds. And when other stakeholders in education realize that grammar is not being taught as a formal system and that students are not necessarily mastering some of the conventions of edited written English, it is easy for them to simply assume a causal relationship and believe that English teachers are not doing their duty when they don't teach grammar as a complete subject. THE RESEARCH What he found was startling. Overall, students showed as much gain on their Cooperative English Tests in years that they hadn't taken the Editorial Skills class as in the year that they had (McQuade 1980, 28); the ES class seemed to make no difference in students' preparation for the College Entrance Examination Board's Achievement Test in Composition (29); the class average on the pre-test was actually higher than the average on the post-test (28); most of the reduction in errors was a reduction in relatively simple errors (mainly capitalization) by just a few of the students (29Ü30); and though the students' pre-course essays were not spectacular, their post-course essays were "miserable" and apparently "self-consciously constructed to honor correctness above all other virtues, including sense" (29). No wonder that this and other studies have led research summarizers like George Hillocks (1986) to conclude that:

Because most Dartmouth students write well enough that their essays are not rendered incomprehensible by grammatical errors, few professors (even those teaching first-year writing courses) offer their students formal, systematic grammar instruction. Accordingly, "teaching grammar" as it is understood on this Web page is not about setting out a formal system of teaching our students the basic structure of a sentence and the usage rules of the English language. A good handbook can provide you a system for that. Instead, "teaching grammar" as we explore it is really about dealing with grammatical errors as they arise in student essays. How does one address errors in student papers? Should one mark every error, or just a few? Which methods of marking are most efficient? Most effective? And what resources are available to Dartmouth students who have persistent grammatical problems with correctness? This page will help professors seeking very practical advice on handling grammatical errors in student writing. Common Errors We've heard professors complain that students seem to make the same grammar mistakes over and over again. Indeed, a study by Andrea Lunsford and Robert Connors show that this impression is correct: twenty different grammatical mistakes comprise 91.5 percent of all errors in student writing. If professors can teach students to control these common errors, they will alleviate most of the grammar errors that they find so distracting.
