Sentence and Predicate Modifiers
At times when reading, we come away with little, if any, understanding. We see the trees, but not the forest. We may miss the meaning for a number of reasons. We may not know the meaning of certain words or the concepts to which they refer. Even when we understand the words, we may come away with little understanding because the writing itself is particularly complex. In this latter instance, it is often helpful to apply grammatical analysis, to consciously attempt to break the sentence into meaningful units.
A Model Of English Sentence Structure
All English sentences follow the same basic formula. All speakers of the language are familiar with that formula, and yet this model is rarely if ever taught.

Purdue University’s Online Writing Lab (OWL) has a well-organized group of handouts on grammar, punctuation, and spelling. They range in skill level from handouts on the use of ‘a’ or ‘an’ for ESL students to handouts on the punctuations of appositives for native speakers. http://owl.english.purdue.edu/handouts/grammar/index.html Most of the handouts from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s Writer’s Workshop are pretty basic, but under the section entitled “Common Usage Problems” you can find great examples of problems such as faulty parallelism, misplaced and dangling modifiers and fused sentences and suggestions for correction of these problems.

Historical background to Word Grammar
Word Grammar is a theory of language structure which Richard (= Dick) Hudson has been building since the early 1980's. (From now on, `I' = Dick Hudson.) It is still changing in detail, but the main ideas are still the same. These ideas themselves developed out of two other theories that I had tried: Systemic Grammar (now known as Systemic Functional Grammar
The main ideas of Word Grammar
Here are the main ideas, together with an indication of where they came from.
  • It is monostratal - only one structure per sentence, no transformations. (From Systemic Grammar) It uses word-word dependencies - e.g. a noun is the subject of a verb. (From John Anderson and other users of Dependency Grammmar , via Daughter Dependency Grammar; a reaction against Systemic Grammar where word-word dependencies are mediated by the features of the mother phrase.) It does not use phrase structure - e.g. it does not recognise a noun phrase as the subject of a clause, though these phrases are implicit in the dependency structure. (This is the main difference between Daughter Dependency Grammar and Word Grammar. I don't know where it came from.)

Six elements of effective writing are included in the English Test punctuation, grammar, sentence structure, strategy, organization, and style.

ACT English Test
The English Test is a 75-question, 45-minute test that measures your understanding of the conventions of standard written English (punctuation, grammar and usage, and sentence structure) and of rhetorical skills (strategy, organization, and style). Spelling, vocabulary, and rote recall of rules of grammar are not tested. The test consists of five prose passages, each of which is accompanied by a sequence of multiple-choice test questions. Different passage types are included to provide a variety of rhetorical situations.
  • Some questions refer to underlined portions of the passage and offer several alternatives to the portion underlined. You must decide which choice is most appropriate in the context of the passage.
  • Some questions ask about an underlined portion, a section of the passage, or the passage as a whole. You must decide which choice best answers the question posed.
  • Many questions include "NO CHANGE" to the passage as one of the choices.
The questions are numbered consecutively. Each question number refers to a correspondingly numbered portion underlined in the passage or to a corresponding numeral in a box located at the appropriate point in the passage. Three scores are reported for the ACT English Test: a total test score based on all 75 questions, a subscore in Usage/Mechanics based on 40 questions, and a subscore in Rhetorical Skills based on 35 questions.

Writing Skills Test The CAAP Writing Skills Test is a 72-item, 40-minute test measuring students' understanding of the conventions of standard written English in punctuation, grammar, sentence structure, strategy, organization, and style. Spelling, vocabulary, and rote recall of rules of grammar are not tested. The test consists of six prose passages, each of which is accompanied by a set of 12 multiple-choice test items. A range of passage types is used to provide a variety of rhetorical situations. Three CAAP Writing Skills scores are reported:
  • a total test score based on all 72 items
  • a subscore in Usage/Mechanics based on the 32 punctuation, grammar, and sentence structure items
  • a subscore in Rhetorical Skills based on the 40 organization, strategy, and style items
Usage/Mechanics. Items that measure usage and mechanics offer alternative responses, including "NO CHANGE," to underlined portions of the text. The student must decide which alternative employs the conventional practice in usage and mechanics that best fits the context.

DISCOVER THE GRAMMAR In this section, the user demonstrates recognition of the target structure and its function. Targeted pop-up Grammar Notes are available to help answer each question. There are two activities:
  • Recognize - The user demonstrates the ability to recognize sentences that contain a particular structure. Four sentences are given, and the user must click on the two that contain the structure. For example, in a unit that teaches the past tense, the user must click on the two sentences that contain verbs in the past tense. Identify - The user demonstrates the ability to recognize the parts of a particular structure in extended discourse. The user picks out numerous examples of the structure within a paragraph and clicks on them word-by-word. Feedback explains what, if any, mistakes the user has made and gives suggestions for trying again. This more challenging exercise requires more discrimination to complete than does Recognize.
  • PRACTICE
In this section, the user practices using the target structures in five to eight separate exercises per unit. A variety of exercises (from over fifteen variations of the six listed below) is offered. Clear and concise instructions tell exactly what is expected for an answer to be correct. Practice exercises often utilize illustrations, word banks, charts, and other material to provide context or reference. Each unit has a unique mix of exercises, allowing the user to continually encounter new formats and exercise types. With the click of a mouse, Grammar Notes specific to each item can be accessed for help. The types of Practice exercises include:
