When we speak and write, we use words to express our thoughts and ideas (we use sentences ). Words, then, are the tools of communication. The English language has thousands of words, but all of them fall into 8 groups or classes known as the parts of speech . Each group has it special work to do. One of the most important things to learn about the English language is the fact that the same words are often used as different parts of speach. http://russian.dmll.cornell.edu/grammar/html/win/gr01_a_1.htm
The concept of parts of speech (classes of words such as noun, verb, adjective, etc.) is confusing because there are many ways to describe parts of speech. One way is to say what they mean, e.g. a verb is an action. Another way is to say how they are used, e.g. a verb is the main part of the predicate. A third way is to say what various forms the words have. e.g. a verb is a word to which you can add -s, -ed, and -ing, e.g. work, work-s, work-ed, work-ing. This third way is how parts of speech are defined in this Grammar. In English the concept of parts of speech is particularly confusing because English is very complex in this regard; a single word may function as all three major parts of speech. The word market functions as a noun in the sentence 'The market is open.' It functions as a verb in the sentence 'They market their goods in Boston.' And it functions as an adjective in the phrase 'market economy'. Russian does not have this complexity. In Russian it is most often the case that the form of a word gives you some hint as to what part of speech it belongs to. You can therefore forget the problems you may have had with terms like

    Q. (from G.) Is the following sentence grammatically correct? "I want the car washed." If it is correct, what part of speech is "washed"? And how would the sense of the sentence differ from "I want the car to be washed"? Does the first sentence indicate a sense of urgency that the second does not? A. Yes, the sentence is grammatical. Off the top of my head, I'd argue that "washed" is a verb and forms the predicate of what is called a "small clause" that serves as the object of the verb "want." The only real difference that I can see is that the second sentence, "I want the car to be washed," has a stronger sense that the speaker is indicating a desire for an action. It is the passive equivalent to saying "I want someone to wash the car." The first sentence can be interpreted as indicating a desire for a state. It is the equivalent of saying "I want the car to have the quality of being washed" or "I want the car to show the results of washing." However, these are very fine distinctions and not all natives speakers of English may agree with them. Ken Q.
