The Parts of Speech
Traditional grammar classifies words based on eight parts of speech : the verb , the noun , the pronoun , the adjective , the adverb , the preposition , the conjunction , and the interjection Each part of speech explains not what the word is , but how the word is used . In fact, the same word can be a noun in one sentence and a verb or adjective in the next. The next few examples show how a word's part of speech can change from one sentence to the next, and following them is a series of sections on the individual parts of speech, followed by an exercise.
Books are made of ink, paper, and glue.
In this sentence, "books" is a noun, the subject of the sentence.
Deborah waits patiently while Bridget books the tickets.
Here "books" is a verb, and its subject is "Bridget."
We walk down the street.
In this sentence, "walk" is a verb, and its subject is the pronoun "we".
The mail carrier stood on the walk

Chapter 1 Introduction Learning about the parts of speech is the first step in grammar study just as learning the letters of the alphabet is the first step to being able to read and write. From learning the parts of speech we begin to understand the use or function of words and how words are joined together to make meaningful communication. To understand what a part of speech is, you must understand the idea of putting similar things together into groups or categories . Let's look at some examples of categories
COLORS FRUITS DRINKS LANGUAGES blue banana milk Spanish red apple water Arabic yellow orange soda Japanese green grape beer English black lemon coffee Korean Colors fruits drinks , and languages are categories . If I tell you that Grebo is a language , you would understand exactly what Grebo is. If we did not have the category language , it would be hard to explain what is meant by the word Grebo . It is very convenient to have categories to talk about similar things. Let's look at some more examples of categories . In the list below, which does not belong with the others?

The AGFL formalism for the syntactic description of Natural Languages has been developed by the Computer Science Department of the University of Nijmegen . It is a formalism in which large context free grammars can be described in a compact way. AGFLs belong to the family of two level grammars, along with attribute grammars: a first, context-free level is augmented with set-valued features for expressing agreement between parts of speech. The AGFL parser generation system for Natural Languages generates efficient parsers from AGFL grammars. It includes a lexicon system suitable for the large lexica needed in real life NLP applications. With financial support from the Stichting NL-net , the AGFL system has been brought under the GNU General Public License , encouraging use and contributions by others.
