English Placement Criteria
Undergraduate English Evaluation Criteria The Undergraduate English Placement test asks students to read a short article and respond in a short essay. The following guidelines will be used by the readers of the essay to place students in ENGL 10A, 10B, OR 1A:
  • The ENGL 1A essay will respond directly, thoughtfully, and logically to the question or topic assigned. It will effectively summarize the reading. It will be well organized and well or adequately developed, using examples from the your experience and evidence from the reading to support your own ideas. It will show a clear command of language and will have very few errors in sentence structure, grammar, and mechanics.
  • The ENGL 10B essay will respond directly to the topic, and will be adequately organized, although it may have limited development and problematic logic, and show an incomplete understanding of the reading. It may contain a few problems in sentence structure, grammar, or mechanics.
  • The ENGL 10A essay may show little or no understanding of the topic and may lack coherence or adequate development. It will probably contain multiple errors in sentence structure, grammar, or mechanics.

Writing in Academic Contexts The Elements of Style by William Strunk Jr. Link 1 This short essay by Kathy Duffin gives an overview of the stages of writing an academic paper. Focusing on the rhetorical concerns of argument, the essay takes a step-by-step approach, detailing the ways a writer explores the purpose of writing, decides on a thesis, and offers support. Well written and concise, the essay is a good review of the process. ARTFL Project: ROGETˆS Thesaurus Search Form Link 2 Provided by Michael Engle, this set of resources takes students through choosing a viable topic, planning a paper, conducting research, citing sources, and more. OBJECTIVES
    • to introduce students to major forms of professional communication to develop in students a positive attitude towards professional communication
DESCRIPTION ENC 2210 is a lower-level course emphasizing the basics of professional communication (research, organization, grammar/mechanics/style) and the forms of professional communication (letters, memos, non-formal and formal reports, proposals). The course is not intended to be remedial although we will work with grammar and mechanics. Students with major difficulties in English will be required to work in the Writing Lab in Broward Hall. All students are urged to make use of this fine service. There will be a one-period lecture each week. There may be quizzes from the lectures and book reading in the weekly labs, so you must attend the lecture before your lab and do assigned readings. In the two-period lab sessions, instructors will review the lecture, assign and discuss outside papers, and conduct in-class writing/editing exercises. Periodic quizzes on readings and lectures, grammar tests, and the first of two Unit Exams will be given during the labs. The second Unit Exam will be given during the lecture.

READING: Each student will read at least eight books on his/her own and report those books in a variety of ways: oral presentation; oral and written reports to the instructor; and thematic essays that discuss material in the reading.
LITERATURE: Students will be exposed to a wide range of literary genres and modes. Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, and related subject areas, will be studied in depth.
ORAL PRESENTATION: In addition to speaking frequently in class, students will present reports on research, independent reading, and individual or group work.

The first lists links to local resource papges and sites and to electronic versions of fairly traditional teaching and scholarly materials: grammar and stylebooks, student papers for consideration and examples, bibliographies. The second part lists materials for teaching on-line, computer-mediated communication (cmc), and the web. The third part is a list of professional organizations and listserv mail groups in composition and rhetoric. Know these, consult these, join these: they are your door into the profession. Spring has Sprung!
I t's getting to be that time of year again. Yes maam. We're wrapping up the homeschool year and making sure our students have become proficient in all the homeschool Core Curriculum courses they've been taking.
Test time is upon us. Wow! All those standardized tests; The C.T.B.S., the SAT9, the I.T.B.S. the C.A.T., etc. are being utilized to assure the powers-that-be that our homeschoolers are getting the instruction required.
We chose to homeschool because we decided to take control of our child's education. We'd fail if we allowed our students to fail and not receive the education necessary to fulfill future dreams.
